DaveJL
Hello all, Here is my entry for this GB- Hasegawa's 1/48 Hurricane IIC, marked as HL608 'Sir Roderic' of 94 Squadron based in the Western Desert in late 1942. I've only recently read up on the name of the Hurricane and from what I can deduct, it was one of three dedicated to a trio of brothers of the MacRoberts Baronetcy who were all killed in RAF service. Lady MacRoberts, the mother of the three men, donated £25,000 to purchase a Sterling Bomber in 1941 then, later, an additional £25,000 for four Hurricanes, three in memory of her sons, and one being named in her honour. Sir Roderic was killed flying such a machine with 94 Squadron in 1941. Sir Roderic was initially LH851 before being moved to HL608. The name has strong links to RAF Lossiemouth and most recently a Typhoon of 6 Squadron had the name 'The MacRobert Fighter - Sir Roderic' painted below the canopy. If any of this is wrong, I'm happy to be corrected!! Anyway, I've no association with any of the above, I just picked an airframe and looked a bit at its history, as I do with most of my builds. Enough waffle, the kit: Extras: I'll be using Eduard etch, Eduard canopy mask, AML paint mask and Skys decals. Thinking of maybe getting a set of resin drop tanks but not sure if this was a standard fit for the Hurricanes in the Western Desert. Cheers and stay safe Dave
Col.
Top choice Dave. Alastreen House and Dounside Estate is located not far from where I live and the exact same project is on my list so personally please to see you covering it I'll take a look at the reference books tomorrow to see if the photos within show the drop tanks being carried by any of them. Sorry Col, just seen this! As I say I didn't know anything about it until I started researching for this build!
DaveJL
Finally made a start on this. Cockpit first - a simple affair which is spiced up a bit with the addition of the Eduard instrument panel and seat belts. A light wash and some weathering also added. Didn't do too much as I only realised when building that the canopy is a closed only option so most of the interior detail will be hard to see. Fuselage halves painted and the front portions fitted. Again some detailing and weathering added: Wings next. The cannon housings were a bit of and iffy fit and will need a dab of filler and some sanding to sit flush. Radiator intake also needs some filler. Cockpit fitted and fuselage closed up: A quick dry fit shows a bit of a fit issue with the wing/fuselage join but shouldn't be too hard to sort. A question if I may; what colour would the main landing gear wells have been? I remember reading somewhere that said, on Spitifres anyway, the wells were just sprayed whatever colour the undersides were in the particular theatre the aircraft was in. Would that be the same with the Hurricane? Cheers and stay safe Dave
DaveJL
More done. Stabilisers and tail wheel fitted before getting the wings fitted to the fuselage, the join of which is a bit iffy to put it nicely. Filler required here and on the join lines on the front upper fuselage. The wings themselves cleaned up nicely. More soon. Dave

The batch after this, 7th Hawker, KW*** onwards. and subsequent seem to have switched to the underside colour, just visible here HurriKZ295tropproductionline by losethekibble, on Flickr HTH
DaveJL
@Troy Smith thanks for the information, exactly what I needed. Would you have any pictures of underside weathering for the Africa machines? You provided me with one for my MK.1 build and it was grimy enough! Thanks again mate! DaveJL
A bit more done. The join around the wings took a bit more clean up than I'd expected and the fit of the tropical filter was also a bit iffy, requiring a dab more filler. Other than that, I've added the landing lights and masked off, the cannon barrels and a few other bits. Once I clean up the filler around the filter, it's pretty much ready for primer, other than fitting and masking the canopy. DaveJL
Just about ready for the painting stage. Canopy was masked up and the last bit of clean up around the tropical filter done. Looks rather messy if I'm honest but can't really do too much more for fear of loosing detail. A few panel lines were re-scribed here and there. Hopefully the primer will show that it's not too bad and then weathering etc can hide any minor imperfections! Hopefully get the canopy framing sprayed and primer on tomorrow, with a start being made on the rest on Sunday. I have a much needed week off work ahead so I plan to get this as close to finished as possible before the pubs open (outdoors of course) on Friday. I hope there are fresh kegs of Guinness ready and waiting More soon and take care Dave
DaveJL
More done over the last couple of days and we're motoring along. Primer went on (Tamiya Extra Fine, but white this time - I ordered the wrong tin online ) followed by a rough pre-shade along with the landing gear bays being sprayed aluminium before being masked up. Once set, I then sprayed the Azure Blue on the undersides. Two light coats was all that was required. I left it for an hour before masking up, ready for the Middle Stone followed by the AML masks: I like these masks; they're cheap and easy to work with though some areas do need either a bit of tape or some blu-tack to help out. Once that was done, I sprayed on the Dark Earth. Again, just two light coats got the job done. Once dry, masks came off, the cannons were painted, some chipping added to the areas of heavy footfall on the inner wings, tail wheel and a few other small bits painted: Flash makes the colours look a tad darker than they actually are. Here's one in natural light: The few sub-assemblies have been painted detailed where necessary: Hoping to get a gloss coat on first thing tomorrow and if all goes well, the decals in the evening. More soon and stay safe. Dave
DaveJL
Managed to get a couple of coats of gloss on this morning and having cured, cracked on with the decals. They were a bit thick if anything but went down pretty well. I popped on the antenna, exhausts and forward bead sight before sealing everything in with another coat of gloss. Alclad Aqua Gloss sprays well through a 0.4 needle and drys fairly quickly. Great stuff. Added a few more bits of weathering around the cannon magazine panels and walkways. A wash and some weathering should bring this up nicely. Hoping to get a wash and some oils on over the weekend. DaveJL
Panel wash on, various Abteiling oils for the weathering topped off with some Tamiya pigments. Just a few bits to finish and that'll be it completed. Quite happy with how it looks: More soon and stay safe Dave
DaveJL
Calling this one done. A few more bits of weathering added and the canopy masking off. Not the best Hurricane you'll see but I'm happy with it More pictures in RFI. As always, thanks to those who commented/followed. TonyOD
Lovely looking build that! I do like it when modern aircraft acquire markings in homage to notable birds from years gone by.
