Faraway
You'd think I'd know when to stop ? This looked an interesting subject, and I do like this 'steam punk' warships, so here goes. Bronco Models 1/144 Imperial Chinese Protected Cruiser "CHIH YUEN" A few sprue shots follow, the detail of the moulding is very good, as you can see. And I shall drill out all the portholes and glaze them. The hull before and after unpacking. A couple of sprues. Rifling Chains Decals and PE
Liizio
That's a nice looking kit, nice moulded detail. Interesting subject too, wish there were more warship models from this era available. Good luck with the build!

Faraway
Forward turret, complete with very thin PE overlay. There is a colour choice form the turret shield, White for 1888 around the year of its launch and Grey for 1894 the year it was sunk. As you can see I've gone for White. Although I've no idea why, I HATE using white paint. But then I never listen to myself 😡 The little grey dots are shells, they should have had their covers closed, but I thought why mould them in and then cover them up, so..... Faraway
Forward deck taking shape. And for once I've planned ahead and fitted three Bob's Buckles (https://www.bobsbuckles.co.uk/index.html) in readiness for the rigging. One either side and one at the pointy end. These little eyebolts are a joy. Jon Edited February 20, 2021 by Faraway

Thanks for that. I do wonder how I managed without BB’s. I’ve just stocked up with them and the brass tube. The instructions for this kit are quite good, you have to assemble three deck sub-assemblies. Forward, midships and aft, they are then fitted to the hull. Not sure I’ll be fitting lots of the pointy bits, davits, rails etc, before I fit the decks to the hull, as I’ll probably knock them off. The rigging is going to be a bit hit and miss, as I’m struggling to find any good references for it. So I might try to find other ships from this period and use those. This also has a very large photograph but it is across the gutter and too large to scan easily - I might try if you are interested. mdesaxe
Here's the photograph. The original scans for both images are much larger but would take up too much space on the site. Faraway
Good afternoon, from a very sunny Somerset. Can we hope spring has arrived ? The first picture is the railing that surrounds the bridge, I have a choice of PE or plastic railing and normally I would go for the PE, as they are a bit finer. But these plastic ones are not bad and to get a nice smooth curve in PE would have been a bit of a trial, mind you these were a royal pain in the ####. The sooner I got the rest of the bridge parts fitted and the whole assembly onto the deck, couldn't come soon enough. So, the forward deck is close to being finished, just a deck house, a couple of ventilators and steps to fit and then it's on to the midships deck. With regards the ventilators, if you look closely at the splendid picture @mdesaxe has sent me, you can just make out that the ventilators have a different colour on the hood part to the shaft. The instructions would have me paint the whole thing yellow, but looking at the pictures I'm going g to paint the shaft yellow, but have yet to decide what colour for the hood. I'm sort of leaning towards black, which will match the funnel. What d'you reckon ? Jon Looking at this photo of the deck, I had a thought that I should have scored some lines, across them to represent the lengths of the planks. I'm quite glad I didn't have this slightly stupid idea earlier, as I would probably have done it. And created one heck of a lot of work. But it would have looked pretty good though.
Liizio
Super clean work, and fast, too! Love how colorful many warships of this age were.
Faraway
The foredeck (?) is complete, except for the mast. I'm supposed to fit it at this point, but I am going to wait until the deck is fitted to the hull, not sure it'll survive. Jon Who needs PE ? Very fine plastic moulding by Bronco.

Faraway
I'm plodding on and have made a start on the middle section of the deck. Drilled a few holes and added some Bob's Buckles (https://www.bobsbuckles.co.uk/index.html) in readiness for the rigging. Assembled the masts and drilled some hole in them, ready for the rigging. I doubt it'll be a full set of rigging, as it is quite difficult to determine just where the lines run from and to, but some are obvious so I'll definitely attach those. I've added the two Gatling guns behind the funnel and painted the ventilators, that's the end of the yellow painted parts, I hope. Yellow is a bad as white for crappy coverage. When I assembled the ships wheel and went to attach it to the deck, I realised it had no cable attached to it, so two holes and a short length of thick cotton later and a bit more realism added. When I looked a bit further ahead in the instructions, I see that the wheel is actually under an over hang of the rear section of deck, so it's not very visible, so you can't really see the cable. But I know it's there. Jon

Faraway
Now, I know I said I wasn't going to fit the masts yet, because they might get damaged. But, I got to thinking that it would be far easier to rig this ship with the decks off the hull, as once they are on the hull the whole thing becomes a bit unwieldy. So.........
