Cleaning Clear Parts

Hey all

just about to finish my Tamiya McLaren Senna. By far the most difficult model I’ve built!

anyway!, the windscreen and windows are covered in a bit of dust and my greasy fingerprints.

what’s the best way to clean the clear parts? They are already glued in place onto an already painted body. I’d like to clean/polish the clear before I attach chassis to the body. Obviously I can’t dip the clear parts into floor cleaner.

I was going to use windex but I believe that might attack the surrounding paint?

thanks

alan

A bit of IPA on a cotton bud should clean it up, but you might need to polish it with a clean one after, as it can leave a smudgy residue if there's a lot of dirt.  There's nothing to stop you from putting a light coat of Klear on with a brush after you've cleaned though :)

Isopropyl Alcohol. Figured it out. Alas I don’t have any in the house. Is there anything else more household I could use? Thanks Mike.

Tape head cleaning fluid?  Does anyone have that anymore?  Also, you can buy it from the Chemist or off eBay.  I picked up a big 5L bottle for about £15-20 not too long after the price settled down after the initial Covid panicking. :)

Oh man! That's just brought back a tidal wave of nostalgia. That 'fake' cassette with the cotton like pads for scraping the tape head. That's two throw backs I've had today.

On a serious note though, I've had some good results with plain old washing up liquid. I've simply smeared the part with liquid, left it for 5-10 mins, then rinsed under warm (not too hot) water and then dabbed away the larger water beads before leaving to dry on some paper towel.

Just a warning, even IPA may attack your paint, depending what kind you used. Unless you can really isolate the area with liquid cleaners, I think your best bet is to try your best to buff out fingerprints with a microfiber cloth or something similar, especially if we're just talking about dust and fingerprints.

I just ran downstairs to look and I do still have a small kit with the tape head cleaner with a small bottle of fluid and there's still some of the fluid in it! It's got to be 20 years since I packed that away in the closet.

They're a product for a byegone era... I honestly don't know how we put up with the sheer lack of quality of tapes.  We're spoiled by our modern technologicals :)

I had a Cadillac that took those.  I was given over 200 of them when a local shopping centre changed to the new CDs. But they didn't work in the car player. I had an adapter to play the regular cassette tapes in the car player. It still ate the tapes though

No, actually!  I think they were a bit of a flash in the pan here in the UK.  I've heard of them of course, and they're mentioned sometimes in road movies from the era.  Probably quite good for their day, but like many decent formats, there's no accounting for why one format triumphs over another sometimes.  Yes, the avilability of porn on VHS killed off Sony's prudish Betamax, but maybe it was the recordable nature of cassette tapes that killed this one, which was playback only?  I forget :hmmm:

You could buy HI-FI recording 8 track decks ... my Dad had one (having spent ages studying the pros and cons of cassette and 8 track, he of course opted for the wrong one :)).

I think they were popular in North America as they were in many ways more suited to cars being easier to handle and less sensitive to environment changes. Ultimately I think it was the portable cassette recorder that killed the 8 track. We had loads of 8 tracks when I was young - even today when I listen to certain songs I'm expecting to hear the 'clunk' sound when the track changes.

Cheers

You speak for yourself! :tease: I couldn't be bovvered with actually moving away from my PC to get music these days. :tired: If it's not available at the touch of a button, it doesn't get used.

Also, I apologise for the massive :offtopic:swerve this thread has taken.

I still have all my vinyl records ( 1500+ 33rpm and 300+ 45rpm ) but my youngest daughter has become a bit of a collector and is quietly waiting for me to croak so she can claim the collection.

The last few months turning LPs over is the only exercise I'm getting.

My kids got me a turntable and some vinyl for Xmas a couple of years ago ... best present ever.

I never got rid of my LP's or singles and my son is viewing the collection with much the same idea.

Cheers,

Alistair
