WW1 Kaiser Class Battleship SMS Friedrich der Grosse

Unfortunately, I don't have much time, so my progress is very slow!

The rear superstructure is finally finished. However, the boats have not yet been glued on, they are "stolen" from my first model and will receive some fine-tuning.

They fit very well between the turrets and the front superstructure.

All the small deck details turned out also very good. They are all glued on individually - because of the wooden deck.

Hello,

here is an update of my work over this weekend.  Added the railing the rigging of the boat crane.

The funnels have to be printed again, the front funnel was printed bad and the aft funnel was not rigged succesfully.

This is  one of the advantages of 3D printing is that if a part fails, you can reprint it. Same happened with the small boat crane hooks.

They are so tiny that it is a pane to rigg them.

Finally ship itself is nearly finished, just the masts and rigging of them.

However, the merciless macro lens still reveals many small improvements that are needed.

Thanks beefy!

But on the enlarged Photos I have noticed them - and they will constantly annoy me

Some more pic`s of the front and aft superstructures.

The front superstructure has not yet been glued on.

I have to fix the big mast and make the rigging first.

The davits are also laying on deck, to avoid breaking off.

Some of the railings at the platforms have to be bent again.

Thanks for looking!

Hello,

This project is finally coming to an end after more than 2 years.
In the final phase, progress is always very slow - there is always the danger of ruining an already successful model!

Here are the two sections that took me a lot of time:
The white circle on the front turret, the first decal from ICM completely dissolved, the second one I tried to cover it with Future but it didn't help!
Due to the uneven surface I couldn't mask. Finally I found a solution: print two circles on a white decal in, if possible, the same shade of gray as the top of the turret.
Then carefully cut out and paint the edges.

The rigging of the aereals: It took 8 attempts to get it right!

I used stretched sprue to create the two poles and clamped them between two tightly stretched rigging lycra cords and then glued them in place.
The problem was that both had to have exactly the same tension in order to get it fairly straight.

The aereals where fixed with low tension to avoid bending the masts.

the bow crest and the ensign at the aft where printed on painted decals.

There is just a little paintwork to do, and fix the hull at the glass base.

Cheers

I see you are using cathedral glass for your mounting. I have a piece that I was going to use on my current Snowberry build, but I decided to use it too late in the build. I was going to cut the hull at the waterline, but wiser counsel here on this site persuaded me not to as being too risky. That said, I will use it in the future. I simply sprayed the underside in Prussian Blue. The sense of depth for calm waters is astounding. It really is amazingly realistic.

Best,

Jeff

Hello Jeff,

for me it is the easiest way to depict calm water, the ratio of effort and result is unique.

You just have to make sure that the sprayed underside is well protected against scratches!

I haven't had any problems with cutting the hull in half on any of my previous models!

But this will be very difficult when the model is in a late stage of build.

Here 1/400 Scharnhorst with a different cathedral glass base.
