Heller LeO 453S SASM99, Maison Blanche, Algeria 1/72

In graciously accepting Col's @Col. invitation to complete my LeO I am continuing my post here. There is actually little more to do. I was concerned about the rules but I have agreed not to post in the Gallery once finished. I hope everyone agrees with this. If not I will withdraw her so as not to offend.

The full detail of the build is below. It is my attempt at building something a little different from the norm. as is my way :). I didn't manage to get her done by the GB deadline because of my slow progress and then I was tripped up near the end by my incorrect measurement of some decals. These are now being re-printed. So, here goes .....

The Heller GB thread:

Today I am left with the following to clean, prime, paint and assemble, plus the code decals of course. You can see in the bottom right that I have had to cut out some new tail wheel doors. I lost the first ones! The rest of the bits are: resin wheels (Renaissance Models), DC-3/C-47 props (Airfix), and the spinner, pitot, an aerial, undercart doors, tailwheel (all from the kit). I will get them all clean and primed. The tailwheel doors need to be curved uner heat before that, though. In addition to this I will be adding more aerials from styrene rod and stringing them with EZ line.  All work for next week :)

That is my concern too, Tony. It was Col's suggestion so ........ I will happily pull the post if any thinks I'm being too cheeky. In fact, getting a comment within a minute or two of posting is now making me think again.

Yes, the doors I've fashioned, if you remember our conversation at the time of losing them ;)

Thinking more I'm going pull this from the GB. I dont feel right about it at all.

Please don't! It's a natural home for it! I only happened to be online at the same time as you, I was just wondering how yours was coming along and searched it up.

If the host of this GB has offered you the opportunity to finish it up here I would take it, as host of the GB it's a refugee from I'd just be happy to see the job finished.

I feel terrible now! I wasn't having a go!

Indeed... my LeO didn't make it for the MTO GB... I mean, WIP-land is alright and all that but there's nothing like the warm glow of a GB!

I realise, mate. It was more about my own embarassement. It seems I'll leave her on this GB, quietly fluffing up her feathers in readiness for flight :)

I think I occasionally specialise in finishing in GB deadline + a week

My form with GB's so far:

  • MTO - failed to finish the LeO, still ongoing
  • Heller Classic - three builds, did alright with that one
  • Interceptors - two weeks to go, Crusader nowhere near finished
  • Gulf War - well underway, haven't even started either build I earmarked for this one
  • Africa - imminent, two builds earmarked.... seriously now?
  • Signed up for Unarmed, French Fancy, Less Than A Tenner, Nordic, Phantom STGB, blus got other builds I want to do including a B-17... ha ha ha

I'm really not on top of this!

I've only tried two - a P/F-51 Mustang STGB from which I backed out and the Heller GB. My problem is speed and available time :(. That's enough tears in my own tea from me! Onwards ........ :)

I think your list belongs to a very typical Britmodeller group builder . There are some shining exceptions among us that always finish and sometimes, or even most of the time, manage to finish several builds which is GREAT! In this community, though, nobody minds our builds struggling or failing to finish... This is not too competitive a bunch and what one does or does not does not (:rofl2:) seem to harm any others. We are all building our models for our own joy and just like to add a social context to this otherwise distant hobby. Sorry to hijack your Ridge Runner´s build thread, though! V-P

I'll extend the same offer to you and your LeO Tony. If it is otherwise eligible to participate in our GB you are welcome to continue it here so long as it isn't entered in the final poll.

I'd much rather find a way to work within the pre-existing rules if it means we see projects finished than have them abandoned on the Shame Shelf.

That's very kind of you to offer @col but I'll leave it where it is, maybe I'll stick a pic in the GB chat when it's done. There's no danger of it going on the Shame Shelf, I've become plain bloody-minded about it now! My build for the GB will be a little Congolese Alouette III with chance of an Eritrean Su-27 making an appearance too.

Looking forward to seeing @RidgeRunner's LrO in all its silvery magnificence, I feel we've been on a bit of journey with these builds Martin!

...the other thing about GB's is I feel it's very poor form of me to rock up with a build in the latter stages of the GB of without having engaged with the social aspect, the chat, other people's builds etc. (in the same way I did for the Heller GB, where I was in it for the duration). Unfortunately I just don't have the time to be involved in multiple GBs that I'm not even active in. I may have to scale back my GB aspirations!

Anyway, sorry for the continued hijackery Martin, looking forward to your LeO's completion!

Sorry all but, having fully decalled her, I noticed that one of the AIA badges - on the port fin - had move and had set crookedly :(. As this was applied over the kit fin flash it has meant some careful peeling with Tamiya tape and colour reparation, slowing things up - again :(. All that is now done and a new badge is applied. She will get an overall Glosscote today and will be left to dry thoroughly for a week before applying Flory Dirt to some areas.

On the plus side, the new codes went on fine and look good :)

Oy Martin

Stop talking about it and get on with it mate !

Good luck with this one, delighted to see this one getting finished and well done to our GB host for allowing its inclusion.

Cheers Pat

After leaving her for a couple of weeks I've been back at the LeO @JOCKNEY et al ....

The first job was to give her any overall Flory Dirt wash. This tempers the shine a bit and gets in to the cevices. With the kit having raised panel lines, which I elected not to re-scribe, it has been variable in terms of the effect. Things like the flap and elevator join lines have filled nicely, as have doors, etc. Around the engines it has worked well too. The rudders on these machines were pretty dirty as they were in the slipstream of the engines and so I've tried to accentuate this there too. The walkway on the wing has had some Sand Tamiya Weathering Stick run over it.

Next I inserted 0.5mm rod on to the pre-drilled holes along the starboard side ready to fit the hand rail. I used 0.5mm Plastruct rod for this. It isn't prefect but it will work for me.

I also dug out the Kristal Klear (KK) in the fuselage windows and refilled them with fresh filler. In the photo below it is still setting so it is still opaque.

I'm edging closer and hope to get the extra bits finally painted by tomorrow. Thereafter it is contruction time and the fitting of the aerials
