*DNF* Part 3: SAAF Havoc creating Boston

Edit 30.5.2021:

I sold this kit! I had only assembled the six parts in the cockpit, and seriously disliked the somewhat limited run feel of the kit. Yes I know, but after just finishing the SWEET! Airfix B-25 and starting Revell Ju 88:s I was a spoiled brat and the MPM kit just didn't make it. End edit!

Springtime is usually good model building time for me. That´s why I dare to start a third build thread! This MPM kit has been in my stash for a few years and waited for its turn. Well the Douglas GB went bust along the other US manufacturer specific GB proposals as they were unsuccessfully merged to a MEGA proposal.

Here´s a pic of the essentials: MPM plastics that can be built as USAAF A-20B or Lend-lease Boston III. Maybe even some other variants, I don´t know. I have a MAV decals set for a SAAF Boston III in North Africa but they appear to have inaccurate type (C1) of roundels for the W8376, damaged in action and struck off charge 22.6.1942. They are correct type A1 in the instructions, but not on the decal sheet :hmmm:. V-P

My God, this was on page two already! As @AaronKSJ took a stab at writing new lyrics for "Africa", I thought I´d give it a shot too... Sorry in advance!

I fear the huns attacking tonight

As I and other drunken of my flight, are conversating
Some no more alive of our Boston flight
Our sunburned birds are full of dust that we´ll all end up being someday

I stopped the CO along the way
Hoping to get some Kittyhawks for escort, more sensible tactics
He turned to me only to say, "You know boy, it's nothing I can do"

It's gonna take just flak to take me away from you
That's something a 109 can also do
I curse the war down in Africa
Remembering the target for today (ooh, ooh)

The Beaufighters roar out in the night
As they fly restless, seeking for some solitary intruders
I know that I must fly and fight
Sure as Monty rises victorious above the Desert Fox
I seek to save what's left inside, frightened of this wreck that I've become

It's gonna take just flak to take me away from you
That's something a 109 can also do
I curse the war down in Africa

Remembering the target for today (ooh, ooh)

”You know boy, it's nothing I can do”

It's gonna take just flak to take me away from you
That's something a 109 can also do
I curse the war down in Africa

I curse the war down in Africa

(I curse the war)

I curse the war down in Africa

(I curse the war)
I curse the war down in Africa

Remembering the target for today (ooh, ooh)

Isn´t it nice to build a model of an airplane with a picture of, and also some aftermarket decals made for it? Not always, I´m afraid...

2021-03-08_02-48-30

A rather well-known IWM picture of a Boston Mk.III W8376 taken somewhere in the desert, now there are some facts that can´t be denied. Then the Muddy Waters: Some on-line sources say this aircraft belonged to the No.12 Sqn SAAF, some say the No.24. The date of the photograph varies from autumn 1941 to spring 1943. Wow. "Royal Airforce Aircraft W1000-Z9999" book, a printed one, by Air-Britain Publication says it was a No.12 Sqn aircraft that was "Damaged in action (18.6.42) and SOC 22.6.42". The squadron received its Bostons in January and became operational in March 1942. In that case the airplane wasn't shot down by Obfw. Espenlaub on 1./JG 27 either, as he was indeed shot down in 13.12.41! Funny what they (we) write here in the interweb

But the decals, yes! Direct from South Africa, where they know their history or then not (eh, those incorrect details re W8376 loss came also from down there...). I won´t mention here the producer of them decals, just to be polite (finally). Just look at their (correct!) instructions with A1- type roundels and the C1- type they come printed with... and the fin flash type too. Being struck off charge in June 1942, this Boston most likely never received the new type of insignia issued in July 1942! I think I´ll revenge 'em all and decorate my build with RAF red center roundels . V-P
