I don't normally build Inter-War period planes but when Pat @JOCKNEY offered me the Supermodel 1/72 Savoia-Marchetti SM.81 as part of a kit swop I decided it would make an interesting subject. The SM.81 aka Pipistrello (Bat) was a derivative of the earlier SM.73 transport, and entered service in around 1934 as a "Bomber Transport" ie "BT". It had  quite a long career though from 1937 onwards it was gradually replaced in the bombing role by the SM.79, but I have modelled it as a plane of 11o Squadriglia BT, 26o Gruppo BT, 9o Stormo BT, which was used in the conflict in Abyssinia from around 1935 onwards. It is painted in the then standard scheme of "Bianco Avorio" or Ivory White with so called "Anti Camouflage Stripes" in red on the wing which were I believe to aid in recognition and also to make the plane easier to locate if it went down over the desert. I have modelled it on the ground with the dorsal turret fully extended but the ventral one retracted - there was very little ground clearance underneath, not helped by the use of a semi-recessed tail wheel as also found on the SM.79.

Not perhaps the easiest of builds, but that was mostly down to the lack of detailed instructions and the somewhat complicated paint scheme which was all brush painted. I found it quite enjoyable and am fairly happy with the result. Now all I have to do is find somewhare to store it.

Cheers

Eduard BF 109 F4 weekend edition, with spare decals from the eduard afrika dual kit. Other than that, the kit is straight OOB
It have been build to represent the last F4 Hans Joachim Marseille flew before he died (In a G2 though)
For paints, I have mainly used AK real colours!

During the 8th Army's surprise advance across the border into Italian territory in Operation Compass in December 1940, the enemy forces were rapidly pushed back and as the campaign continued many Italians were captured. In February 1941 General Annibali Bergonzoli was taken at Breda Fomm - his splendid facial hair had earned him the knickname "barba elettrica" from his own troops and the Brits translated this as "electric whiskers". With him came his command vehicle or caravan, based on a Lancia 3RO chassis, but the Brits transplanted it on to a Leyland Retriever 6 x 4 chassis and it was initially used by General Ritchie. It was a combination office, map room and bedroom at first. Later it was to be used by General Montgomery and in around 1980 Matchbox issued a kit of it - this is my build of the Revell re-boxing. As with most Matchbox military vehicles it comes with a small diorama base together with a Daimler Scout Car Mk II commonly known, perhaps incorrectly, as a "Dingo". I have modelled it as it might have looked during the capture of Tunis where, incidentally Monty picked up Italian General Messi's caravan which was mounted on a Mack chassis and used as living/sleeping quarters from then on.

It was quite a fun build - I enjoyed it.

What a fin GB this has been for me, and so many excellent builds from so many modellers.  Really.  Wide scope and breadth of subjects.

Here is probably my last for this GB, AZ Model OOB, Curtiss Hawk H75C-1, Free French Air Force, Escadrille GC3/2, Sgt. Marcel Milan, Thiés West Africa, 1941.

Marmon Harrington  MkII MMF. Attack Kits 1:72. The Marmon Harrington was a South African armoured car that was built in large numbers, over 5000, and widely used by British and Commonwealth forces, particularly in Africa and the Balkans but in other theatres. This one has been built as one from a Headquarters Unit from a South African Army unit during the East African campaign. Built out of the box and painted with Lifecolor Dark Olive.

Second Marmon Harrington, this time a MkII ME. The ME variant had some additional changes to make it suitable for service in hot climates. Again this is one of the Attack Kits boxings in 1:72, they do a whole range.

Marmon Harrington MkII ME, completed as F22928 of the Kings Dragoon Guards (11th Hussars) at El Alamein in October 1942. Finished in the Caunter scheme with Lifecolor paints. A lot of masking involved.

I suppose it must be at least 60 years since I built my first Airfix Bf 110 kit, so as my final entry in this GB I have built the 2012 reboxing of their 2010 release. This is a 110E-2/Trop in the markings of 8/ZG 26 "Horst Wessel" as it might have been at the end of 1941 into early 1942 in Libya.

DSC05254-crop DSC05256-crop DSC05258-crop

The kit went together pretty well and the only real problem I had was getting the cockpit interior in place - the instructions are a bit vague. I went for the option of the smaller drop tanks with a couple of 1000lb bombs and no auxilliary oil tank, and added a couple of aerials and a drum magazine for the rear gun which Airfix had missed out. Curiously They also seem to have missed the pitot head, but otherwise it is a nice enought kit and a relatively simple build.

That brings my contribution to this enjoyable GB to an end.

Thanks for watching.

Mozambique Air Force "MiG 21"

Story goes Lt Adriano Bomba, a Portuguese speaking MiG pilot, was recruited to defect a MiG-21 to South Africa. What might have been a case of error in translation - on Wednesday, 8th of July 1981 it was not a MiG-21 that entered South African airspace but a MiG-17 with registration number "21". Lt Bomba was intercepted and escorted by two SAAF Mirage F1AZ's to a local air base where the "21" made a succesfull landing. SAAF did not really have a reason to evaluate MiG-17 but was test flown few times anyway before returned to Mozambique.

Kit: Airfix Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17F 'Fresco' (Shenyang J-5) (A03091)

Scale: 1/72

Paints: Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Metal Colour

Aftermarket: Berna & Print Scale decals, Eduard Brassin wheels, Eduard PE set, Master pitot tubes & guns

Weathering: Oil paints, Tamiya weathering products, Ammo Mig weathering products,

Tobruk, Lybia 2017

A pair of LNA aligned Lybian Air Force planes are prepared for ground attack operations.

The planes are the Eduard MiG-21 MF with decals from the recent bagged edition, alongside the resin Heroes Models SF260 Warrior.

The 260 is a great little kit although I didn't do it justice with slightly fogged canopy and grainy paintwork. Still got 2 in the stash fortunately.

Technical support is provided by three 3D printed vehicles from Butlers Printed Models which are a little rough but provide some great weapon options.

The figures are actually WW2 figures from Arrowhead Minatures.

Come drop some insults in the thread
