Eduard 1/48th Mig-21 BIS

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Here is my latest model off the bench, Eduard's 1/48th Mig 21bis.

A very nice kit, excellent fit overall with the usual Eduard's stunning surface detail, the only downside I found was that it was slightly complex in places and the instructions were a bit vague. this is partly due to the multiple build options all with slightly differing parts.

Painted with Alclads and MRP lacquers, and then an oil wash. The only addition I made was  Master pitot tube.

Thanks for looking, gazza l

Fantastic!

I am making the Weekend edition Eduard 1/48 Mig-21 MFN at present.... finding it a bit of a struggle tbh, all these fiddly vanes, scoops and vents on the fuselage that basically have to be glued directly on with no guide pins or grooves, to say nothing of all the tiny aerial fins.   Its not going to end up anywhere near as good as yours!

Classic daft laddie error... I forgot to put the nose cone in before I glued the fuselage halves together 😳.... think I've managed to rescue it but then when I used clingfilm to protect the nosecone while I assembled everything else, the paint has somehow blistered.  I am really struggling with the adhesion of acrylic paint, even after letting primer cure for more than 24 hours.

Beautifully done! I'm curious about the "NAVY" on the fuselage side. Is there a story behind it?

Thanks.

According to the Eduard's description, aircraft of this squadron were "task with protecting the polish shoreline, naval vessels and bases of the polish navy, as well as deterring attacks from potential enemies."

Cheers alanbeeb.

There are a lot of fiddly bits aren't there? keep going don't give up. As for the paint, I never got on with water based acrylics so I now use lacquer types like MRP or Alclad metal paints.

A really beautiful MiG 21 Gazza. This Polish scheme looks brilliant. How did you produce such a perfect blemish free finish?

Pete

Thanks Pete,

Believe me there are a few blemishes if you look closely. I use Mr surfacer as a primer, then Alclad gloss black base coat, and then Alclad aluminium, rubbing down any rough bits with some Micromesh cloth between coats.

Thanks everyone for your comments, gazza l

Beautiful job!  I'm just in awe of the quality of your finish--whether it's natural metal or an overall silver lacquer.  The Polish Navy in fact used a variety of fighter and bomber aircraft in their heyday, but now are reduced to a handful of rotary-wing aircraft.  Poland retired the last of its '21s in 2003 or 2004.

I'm no expert and only on my 3rd Edwards kit but  had a similar problem of my first effort. I put it down to the amount of releasing agent on the plastic and not fully washing it all off.

Stunning looking finish on this kit.
