bootneck Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Hello everyone, I am teaching myself to use CAD and I thought "what better way to put anything I learn into practice than with a WiP?". I have chosen a couple of subjects to practice with, namely a military low-bed trailer, which is part of another ongoing WiP, and this Leyland Hippo 6x4 10 ton truck. I shall start with the chassis, as I have been able to find and download a good set of plans from the Mick Bell archives. To start with, I uploaded the plan into Fusion 360, as a canvas template, and then resized it to 1:144 scale. Following that, I was able to start drawing the chassis frame. Then, I was able to add some of the cross-frame supports. Note that I am only drawing half of the chassis, doing this has two benefits for me: - it save time as I will make a mirror copy once I have completed the drawing and match it over to the other side to make a complete chassis. - I find it difficult to draw identical lines and curves for each side of a drawing, this method helps to eliminate such errors. Next to go on the drawing are the suspension and drive-unit components. Please excuse my lack of the correct terminology, I know very little about vehicles. Here we have the front leaf springs and the two differential units, plus supporting brackets The petrol tank is situated on this side of the chassis so that was next to be drawn up. And this is where I have managed to get to so far. All the components described above have been brought together. I shall spend a little time working out what else is needed and where etc., although the prop shafts will probably be my next task. Some areas still have me befuddled, such as the two items just inside the front wheels on the bottom left image of the diagram I am using. Thanks for looking. Mike 6
bootneck Posted February 14, 2021 Author Posted February 14, 2021 I spent this morning adding more detail to the chassis, much of it based on the prop shafts and universal joints etc. The drawing was then mirrored so that the right side matched the left side and this view shows how it all joins up. That view looks a little cluttered and so I separated the components out, giving more clarity of the parts drawn so far. I have now reached a stumbling block as I'm not sure of the shape of the clutch unit, or the engine block it attaches to for the prop shaft to connect to. The plan view of the diagram show the width of the block but not the height. I shall have to do more research into how that area looks. I am assuming that 6x4 means six wheels, four of which are driven. If that is correct then I am also assuming that the front axle is free rotate, without any drive to it i.e. no prop shaft to attach to it. cheers, Mike 4
Mancunian airman Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) Mike You are correct with your assumption of the 6 x 4 drive . . . If I am reading this properly then the two item by the front wheels are suspension pistons and the line behind the axle is the steering rack . . . Ian Edited February 14, 2021 by Mancunian airman
Mancunian airman Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 Mike this may be of interest, fast forward to the RAF refuelling section , 6.16 mins, as this shows the vehicles and the details of the pump system in the back . . . Ian 1
bootneck Posted October 8, 2021 Author Posted October 8, 2021 Hello everybody, I haven't updated this thread since February, mainly as I was struggling to obtain details of the chassis section. The Mick Bell plans are useful but sometimes we need 3D views and not just plan and profile to get the detail right. I have spent quite a bit of time searching, and asking on BM, for details and feel that I am now getting some progress with the drawing. Herewith some views of my progress so far: The Mick Bell plans don't show the locations of the prop shafts and universal joints in profile; therefore, I am having to guesstimate the angle from the diff (exchange box next to the petrol tank?) to the axles etc. Plus, I still have to work out the engine shape and where it sits etc. cheers, Mike 5
bootneck Posted October 11, 2021 Author Posted October 11, 2021 I have received some really useful drawings and images from @Dave Swindell and @Six97s which has helped me to progress the rear end of this chassis, thank you both! Here is a view of my progress, it doesn't look very different from the previous update; however, I now have the prop shafts and uv joints correctly aligned with the differentials etc. I just need to work out the shape, size and location for the engine. Once I have done that, then I can start on the bodywork. cheers, Mike 4
Tony Glover Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Hi There Just wondering if you finished the CAD model of the Leyland Hippo. My Dad drove one of these during the Normandy Campaign following D-Day and I would love to print it as there are no good cast models of the Hippo. Best wishes Tony
bootneck Posted December 6, 2023 Author Posted December 6, 2023 Hi Tony, I think my model is for a postwar version, rather than the wartime version; although I am not exactly sure of the Hippo's history timeline. I was struggling to find better details of the cab, its interior and how it fitted onto the chassis. After a while of not finding anything I got distracted on to other things, such as Land Rovers. I like large trucks, especially multi-axle versions in British service. Maybe I will revisit this WiP if better information comes available. cheers, Mike 1
