Hunter Rose
Yeah some atomic space suspenders are in order I think! Thanks Pete! I'm trying to stay fairly true to the miniature but do like to give my own flavour to it, there's a ton of fan art out there which I'm careful to avoid as that's someone else's interpretation and they can wander away from the original at lot at times. Hunter Rose
Progress slowed down slightly this last week, had a dose of the flu (not covid!) but managed to get a little bit done. Want to beef up the thigh armour so it looks more chunky and also becuase I want to give it a beveled edge. Started by raking over the surface a bit to even out the surface a bit and show up any major bumps (and yes that is a nit comb, pefect for the job and never been used!) IMG_20210502_185650 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Added some bits here and there to fill it out a bit IMG_20210502_185754 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210502_190619 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then rolled out some clay to add height to the middle bit of the armour plates IMG_20210502_190558 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210502_190810 by Nick Frost, on Flickr To help me do the beveled edge I rolled out thin sausages of clay in varying sizes to help me create the sloped side. Weeell, I noticed at this point that I'd done the crotch armour lines upside down! So had to smooth them over and redo it. IMG_20210508_141442 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210508_141746 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I had to redo the lines by lightly marking them out first and the carving in the final lines. IMG_20210508_143138 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210508_143446 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210508_144634 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210509_124645 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where I'm up to, next up I'll get the armour section lines on the thigh armor and begin working on the creases. He does have more armour plates that hang down from his belt at the sides and read, but as they sit over the top I want to start some crease work before I start them. Thanks for looking, more soon
Carts
I cant count the amount of times I've put my Crotch armour on upside down Joking aside, looking really good, going to be a very impressive figure once completed. 1

Thanks Andy! And I hope so, its only a pair of legs but I'm really starting to get a sense of it coming together! Had a day off today so managed to do some more with this guy. Started by getting the calipers out so I can measure the height of the thigh armour and get the gaps and lines as equal as possible. These are really invaluable when it comes to sculpting! IMG_20210510_104028 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once meausred I used them to mark where my lines will go and used a scalpel blade to mark them to get them as straight as I could at this stage. IMG_20210510_111628 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_111828 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I used one of my smoothing tools edge on to make a definite deep line before tidying it up by smoothing over the planning lines. IMG_20210510_112147 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_130906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point I thought that as its a large scale figure the lines seperating the armour plates are too thin and need to be thickened to make a larger gap, so I carefully went over them with a wider less tapered tool to do that. IMG_20210510_143405 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_144414 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then did the same for the crotch armour IMG_20210510_144755 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Was much happier with that so repeated the process on the other thigh armour plate IMG_20210510_144755 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_150418 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_151142 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210510_151544 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And there we are! Armour plating lines complete. Next up I've been thinking about the straps holding them on, I dont want to do just a strap going round like I did for the knee guards. I want something a bit more interesting but not too crazy the will look a little too far away from the T'au look. So I'm thinking some kind of intergrated strapping, so there will be a buckle on the side of the armour with a strap that goes to another clip not far from it and the strapping disapears into a slit to give the impression of the straps bing inside the lining of his under armour. So I'll start mucking about with that idea on the next update. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Been doing plenty but forgetting to upload, so sorry if its a bit pic heavy! I was going to make a start on the straps for the thigh armour but I thought I'd better make a start on the upper leg creases in case they have an impact on how that goes. So decided to get his rear end sorted out first, so I began with adding a little clay to as the trouser layer, making a seam and then making some creases coming out from it. IMG_20210511_185637 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210511_190013 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210511_190359 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I rolled some clay and positioned my creases before blending them in. IMG_20210511_191313 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210512_165618 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210512_170244 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210512_170952 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210512_171008 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210512_222209 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Really happy with how its looking, gave it all a smooth over with my silicone brush and moved on to the next bit. IMG_20210513_184859 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Sticking with the backs of the legs, I moved on to the creases above the back of the knee. So added more rolled clay and got blending. IMG_20210513_190218 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_190753 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_190959 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_191223 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_192512 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_192537 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_192557 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210513_192815 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Some of the creases are probably a bit on the large side, but I really enjoy doing them and like the look, and they are going to be painted black and I like the idea of having plenty of dramatic edges to highlight! Then I added a couple of smaller ones next to it so its not sitting in isolation surrounded by smoothness which doesn't look right to me IMG_20210514_080832 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And because I added two above the strap I added a bit to the underside as it seemed odd to have no corresponding bit of crease there. IMG_20210514_081416 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_081634 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Also at this point I thought the creases above the strap looked a little odd, I think I had them end at too similar places so they seemed in an unnatural row. So I added some more clay to alter the size and direction slightly. IMG_20210514_135948 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_140234 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_140501 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Much happier with how it looks now, less uniform and more natural. I then added another crease coming from that area and flowing between his knee guard and the thigh armour, figure it would probably bunch a bit there. IMG_20210514_141251 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_141514 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_141930 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Seemed a bit of a gap between the new crease and the last ones, so I added just a small one between. IMG_20210514_142116 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_142535_1 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With that done I began the straps, started by rolling some clay flat and cutting my shapes, which I put in place. IMG_20210514_142950 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This is going to have the appearance of an integrated strap so to help it blend in I sliced them down at an angle to taper it. IMG_20210514_143641 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Blended the edges in to fix it in place then cut some squres to create the opening where the strap goes into the fabric of his under armour suit. IMG_20210514_144641 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_144815 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_145349 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Little hard to see in the below photo but I did also add some texture to the straps. IMG_20210514_150845 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And then I repeated all that to do an inner thigh one on the other side which I gave the same texture IMG_20210514_191201 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I decided to add a couple more vertical creases to his upper thigh area, from all the rsearch I did looking at images of creased trousers it seemed that on the upper leg you tend to get fewer creases which are more vertical than horizontal as they are pulled down by the bunched up horizontal creases of the lower leg. IMG_20210514_193217 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_193658 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_193928 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The final thing I did was to create some pouches which will go on his belt. Want to do two that are next to each other so I trimmed down a wide rectangle and then just put a deep line between as its easier then trying to do them seperately and put them together. IMG_20210514_193928 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I put a deep line where the flap goes and sliced up from the bottom of the puch to make the flap stand off, and used the tools to give all the seam lines before rolling a ball for the buttons which were flattened in place. IMG_20210514_200146 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_194529 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_194634 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_194823 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_195016 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_195222 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_195731 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_195749 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210514_195819 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I'm thiking I might bake them first to preserve the detail, dont trust myself to not ruin it a bit when I'm getting it in place! Next up I'll have to get the other leg done, so more creases and getting the straps on to the thigh armour. Plus I'll make some different pouches for the other side. Hunter Rose
Thanks chaps! And now for further trouser adventures! Got some more done on this guy, started by cutting away a section of his belt to make a gap for the pouches. IMG_20210515_190853 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I have done the first bit of baking of this build! My daughter had some little fimo things needed baking so I slapped the belt pouches in aswell to preserve the detail. Just took a couple of pics with it in place to see how it will look. IMG_20210515_190835 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210515_190844 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once its done I'll glue them in place after the legs are baked. Right and the damn left knee guard rears its ugly head again! Never quite been happy with it and when I was sorting out the thigh armour I was able to see why. Once that was on and made it easier to get a sense of the direction the leg is facing it became obvious that its pointing the wrong way, see below pics. IMG_20210515_190947 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210515_190955 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So once again I hacked it off, moved it over a bit and then built up the left side to get the orientation right. IMG_20210515_191227 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210515_192719 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Had to make a little more strapping to fill the gap left when it was moved over. IMG_20210515_192724 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210515_193105 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And now finally I'm happy with it! IMG_20210515_193114 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210515_193250 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then with that done I got the thigh armour straps on to the left leg as well in the same way as before. IMG_20210516_190055 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_190739 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I also rolled out and cut some clay shapes for the hip armour plates, again with wide bits of clay I tend to press a tool right through to help stick it to the below surface as edge blending isn't always enough. IMG_20210516_192824 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Smoothed the marks over and blended the edges in to hold it in place. IMG_20210516_193253 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I did the other side too but I've only now just realised I didn't take any pics of that process!! I was too far in the zone I guess! I cut a bit for the rear armour plate too, but for that one I had to build up the dip in his back to help it sit flat and look right. IMG_20210516_194204 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_194353 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_194630 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then in the same way pushed my tool through to help stick it on and then blended the edges to the surface to hold it in place all round. IMG_20210516_194849 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_195649 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_195701 by Nick Frost, on Flickr More detail to add to the plates but I'm really happy with the overall look now they are in place. IMG_20210516_195921 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210516_195946 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And it feels good to say that the to do list for the legs is very short indeed, going to do two more longer slightly slimmer pouches for the other side of the belt, detail the plates a bit and add a few more creases here and there and the legs are done! So first I will add some detail to those armour plates next, then pouches and creases. Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Just a quick update to show a little more progress. I was making a start on the hip armour plates and wasn't very happy with it, below is what I did. IMG_20210517_174908 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Seemed a little basic and lazy, so instead of just drawing a line I decided to add another layer to give a stepped effect. I know I've mentioned quite a few times about "blending the edge" to affix added bits of clay but not sure I've ever shown or explained it. Its nothing complicated, I just lay the piece on and then using one of my tools I put it half on and half off the edge and press down and then blend it in to look smooth which also helps stick it in place. IMG_20210517_194819 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210517_194959 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I did quite a deep lines so I had to fill some of them before smoothing the edges IMG_20210517_195328 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I decided to give it a hinge type detail so cut a hole that overlapped the belt and the plate. IMG_20210517_200206 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And cut a piece for the hinge and got it in place, then poked some screw holes (?) in the corners as an extra detail IMG_20210517_195746 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210517_200451 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210517_200459 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210517_200451 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Was pleased with that compared to the first attempt so copied it to the other side IMG_20210518_194056 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210518_194711 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210518_195128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now I see the photos think the piece I put in on this side was a little too thin so I'll put another bit over the top to lift the level of it in the next session. Also made a start on the rear armour plate, added a dipped section to help give the dual layer impression. IMG_20210518_195611 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210518_201449 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next up I'll carry on with detailing the amour plates. Hunter Rose
17 hours ago, Toftdale said: Already looking forward to it 😀 - Andy Thanks Andy, and here it is! So I dug out the dodgy armour bracket that was way too thin, and cut a thicker one which was pushed into place and then given the four screw/rivet holes. IMG_20210521_190624232_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_190813229 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Oh and by the by I got a new phone with a much better camera that I'm pretty pleased with. Did another bracket for the back, except I didn't cut into the belt I made it stand off, I want the back plate to be larger and a bit chunkier than the sides, think it makes sense from an armour point of view but also it looks good in profile. With that in mind I added a another layer to back like the sides, so rolled out more clay to cut, and marked out a notch to go around the bracket bit. IMG_20210521_193227015 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_194234858 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_194439490 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_195212722 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_195237020 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added a few more small creases to some of the areas that I felt needed it. IMG_20210521_195438226 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_200115609 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_200203254 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210521_200731313 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_093522833_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_093850879_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_094245258 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_094612126 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_095120173 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_095225511 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_095453303 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_100213415 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after the crease work I began making another pouch for the other side of his belt, just doing the one and making it a bit longer. So just like the others rolled a thick bit of clay and used the scalpel to mark the flap and slice a bit off to create the lip it needs. IMG_20210522_192150228 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_192417414 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then used my ball stylus to make the seam lines and squashed a circle in place for the button as the others. IMG_20210522_193010989 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193319899 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And with that I'm thinking the legs are done, all I need to do is bake the new pouch then I can mark out the gap I need to cut in his belt and then they can be baked too. IMG_20210522_185750499 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193520494 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193530507 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193541443 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193602939 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20210522_193614546 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So yeah next up I'll just bake the new pouch, cut its gap in the belt and I can begin sorting the armature for his torso! Hunter Rose
Just a quick update to show I've not forgotten about this guy! I've finally got the legs baked at the weekend, I just stuck with the packet instructions to cure it which is 15 minutes for every 1/4 inch thickness at 135c, so whacked him in for half an hour to be sure as I didnt have any bits thicker than half an inch thanks to a much better blocked out armature this time around. As its pine I wrapped the bottom in foil before going in as resin from the wood has a tendency to leak out and I dont want the fun of cleaning that off! Put a bit over the greenstuff at the top as I wasnt sure if that would react badly to the heat. IMG_20210806_105559670_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr And then it was in the oven for him, man even though its just the legs it JUST fit inside! IMG_20210806_105754143_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr So now its out and fully cured so only changed now can be made with a chisel! IMG_20210806_114153584_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thankfully the pouches still have a nice tight fit in their belt gaps so no modifying needed IMG_20210806_114248683_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Man so relieved to see no cracks to deal with! Now thats done I can begin work on the next armature needed for the torso, I needed to get this cured first so I can measure and map out the shape of the midsection so it lines up. The top has wire and bits sticking out, so the plan to deal with that and make a decent connection point is to push a cone of clay over it to get the inner shape and then take it off and bake it. Then that can be the start point of my armature that I know will fit snugly (fingers crossed!) Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
RIGHT! A little bit of progress on this guy. Not much but an important step to getting on with the torso. I've been recovering from surgery for the last couple of weeks (yeah yeah, get the excuses in first! haha) so taking pictures of the droid on the STAP was about all I could manage! Been crazy tired but made a first start on the armature for the torso. As always its the technical details that slow me down rather than the actual sculpting, but I have got my head around the next step of making a separate torso armature that I can then add to the now baked legs. Started by getting out the same skeleton guide that I've used for this guy and made the basic structure with thick stiff wire and wrapped soft armature wire around it. Then I used the guide to work out where to cut the two main bits of "spine" to ensure the height would be correct, and added a cut section brass tube to allow it to be connected. I'll put some clingfilm over the top of the legs and use a layer of greenstuff around the edge of the top of it to make a solid base for the torso section that will perfectly mate to the lower bit, from there I can use more wire and greenstuff to create a solid armature that will sit nicely over the raised middle of the legs armature. So one bit of the brass tube will be glued into place and after its baked I should be able to just slip it on and glue the whole thing solid. So next up will be more armature work with wire and greenstuff to get that basic structure done so I can start blocking out with foil. Thanks for looking, more soon
