Hunter Rose
Holy moly its about time for an update! I have been working on him here and there, just been really bad at updating, would make my life so much easier if it was possible to generate BB codes on the Flickr app! But anyway, I've been sorting out his shield, which as I mentioned earlier I'm now making out of styrene. To start with I was thinking about scribing the lines for the shields armour plates but I want bigger neater gaps (especially at this scale) than may be possible. So decided to cut the basic shapes and then in thinner styrene to cut the armour plates out and stick them on separately. So first things first I grabbed the styrene sheet and started cutting. IMG_20220318_165212296_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220318_190029515 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220318_190510389 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220318_190533128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr In the above photo you might notice the side panels are now much wider than before so they will cover more of his arm when its done. I decided on that after @Will Vale mentioned about them being smaller is what threw the look of the first design off, and I think I'm falling into that trap again. I dont want it too look like he has a baking tray on his arm! So then I started out cutting the armour plates to make it look like my design. IMG_20220329_190106428 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220329_192407286 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220331_185110056 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220331_190903330~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220331_191014632~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I kept the side armour plates and front in one piece in the hope I can bend it to easily get the angle I wanted on the side bits, so got it glued on to the thicker bits and weighed it down for good contact. IMG_20220402_142316893 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220402_142740085 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The bending went okay with the top part, but the side bits were a bit delicate and snapped! Which at least allows me to get a sharper edge I guess! So reverted to my method of just using greenstuff for everything so squidged some thin sausages into place and used some tape to hold the anlges IMG_20220404_184928222 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220404_185047405 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats the basic shape all sorted, I still have to make the raised domed bit with the tau symbol on but that should hopefully be the easy bit. Other bits I did with this guy, I got the torso and fist in the oven and baked them, and those bits and the legs have been primed and sprayed black just as an undercoat. IMG_20220313_142550825 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220325_161632297_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220325_161827747_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where I'm at with him. Next up I'll carry on with the shield, want to get in cleaned up and sorted first before moving back on to his pulse rifle. Hunter Rose
Right got some more shed time, I've brush painted some white on the body, hasn't gone down that brilliant. I've ordered some tamiya matt white that I'll airbrush over to get a better finish. Really annoyed that the "matt" black spray paint I bought was satin at very best which didn't help as an undercoat. IMG_20220410_190122637_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr I got the shield primed too and put it in place to see how it looked, want to make sure the position it sits in is okay. IMG_20220416_112909519_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pretty happy, now I just need to fill some of the gaps and then I can give it a rub down to smooth it all out. IMG_20220417_140309803_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr In the meantime I got back to the gun, finished cutting out the middle bits for the grip and the trigger. IMG_20220415_145516920 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I started planning out the panels for the gun, I want the front parts to sit off by 1mm but I only have .5mm styrene so I glued two together and then started measuring and drawing IMG_20220416_185908165~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220416_191207923 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220417_190008052 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once I marked out where I'm putting panel lines I got them glued in place IMG_20220417_191116968 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Only at this point did I kick myself a little bit as I still have some vent holes to put in place, and that would have been way easier to cut out when they were not glued in place! But hey ho I just marked them out with my scribing templates as a guide. IMG_20220418_190737514~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where I'm up to, next up I'll cut out the vent bits, which hopefully wont be too bad, pretty sure ill be able to get the bits out once cut, the glue is only wicked around the edge so fingers crossed it wont be too stressful to sort out. Also I'll add some more detail to the butt end of the gun, this time with the .5mm styrene to add another level to the details. Hunter Rose
Got more done with the pulse rifle yesterday. Started by getting the vent details cut out, thankfully that was more straightforward than it could have been. Just drilled out some holes for the rounded ends and then scalpeled the straight edges. IMG_20220419_185808522 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220420_185832283 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220420_190616272 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I may have to fill the drilled holes slightly at the ends of the vents just to make the depth even, I'll see how it looks at the primer stage but think it will probably stand out like a sore thumb if I dont. Moved on to the butt end of the rifle, cut some armour plate thats the same 1mm thickness as the front panels. IMG_20220420_192900890 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220420_191540036 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220420_194152570 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I cut another thin panel for the top, this time just using the .5mm thickness. IMG_20220420_194819879 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I clamped the whole thing and got it glued into place with liquid cement IMG_20220420_195316086 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once it was all dry I had a look and noticed a slight cut line where I had overcut at the bottom of the rifle where the barrel meets the butt IMG_20220420_221609026 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Was going to fill it but decided to just add a small panel there to cover it, but before I got to that I cut some small circles using a punch to add some little details. IMG_20220421_183552687 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220421_184108511 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added a small panel to both sides to cover the cut I mentioned earlier. IMG_20220421_185718792 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Really pleased with how its looking, I dont do a lot of scratch building so Im always a bit apprehensive! The T'au pulse rifle also has a round detail at the front, I dont know what it is supposed to be, but I've marked out where its going to go and found some plastic domed bits that are the right size. IMG_20220421_190810898 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220421_190823622 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Only thing is they are a bit on the tall size so I'll have to cut into the rifle or sand the bottom of the bits, might even be able to just saw some of it off. I'll have a play about with it and that will be in the next update. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Just a little update, got the circle bits on the gun and am just so happy it worked out to be pretty simple to sort out. I held the bits in place and scribed around the edge just to give a slight guide for my scalpel blade and then just carefully cut around till I could pull out the round bit of cladding to allow the bits to sink in nicely. IMG_20220423_194748712 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220423_194758899 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Oh and I also cut a couple of small bits to frame in the area where the barrels will poke out IMG_20220423_194809497 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And speaking of barrels that will be the next bit when my styrene tubing arrives. Once thats here and I can sort them out and then I'll scribe all the lines and use some milliput on the top and bottom to hide the styrene sheet edges and give some shape. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
My styrene tube arrived so I could crack on with the next bit of the gun. First I cut 2 small sections with a scalpel IMG_20220425_190724685 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then to get them in place I decided to use a blob of greenstuff on the end of each one, that way once on I can get them straight by eye with a bit of careful nudging. IMG_20220425_191017349 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220425_191129392 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220425_191238450~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220425_191251633~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr A little bit blobbed out at the edges on one of them but thats okay, I'm planning on filling that end bit so its all flush which will cover that over. Next I got my sand paper and files out and smoothed over the grips and the cut edges of the foamex to neaten it up. IMG_20220426_201840386~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I started scribing the lines over my pencil guides IMG_20220426_201856635 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220426_202757943 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point it was still a bit of a pencil mess so I decided to spray it with some primer to check it all over, and I'm very happy with how its turned out! I was thinking of putting a scope on it but I really like the shape and lines of it without one so we'll see. IMG_20220427_183650983_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up is some finishing on the gun using some milliput to fill and shape the top and bottom of where the styrene armour plates I added meet the foamex to neaten and hide the joins. Hunter Rose
Managed to get more done with the pulse rifle, I mixed up some milliput so I can neaten up the rifle. I rolled long sausages of it and just used my sculpting tools to squidge it in place and used water to smooth it over IMG_20220429_152838055 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220429_153214255 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220430_184254297 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220430_185138069 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220430_185431579 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220430_185908530 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220502_193931407 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once it was all on and dry I gave it a rub down with some sand paper IMG_20220503_150357836_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats where its sitting until I grab some more primer, hadn't realised I'd ran out! So next up it will get a blast of primer and probably will require more sanding, I'll also put a small amount of milliput into the vent holes to help hide the drill holes Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Just a teeny tiny update, I primed the the pulse rife and it looked okay after the rub down so I got the brushes out and painted down the black and the white IMG_20220507_194046453 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220508_194719392 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I may have jumped the gun slightly (pun-tastic) as I think I'll have to go over some of the scribe lines again where they are a little shallow, but its easily touched up and another layer of white wouldn't hurt anyway. The only other block colours that need to go down are gold for the round bit at the front, and the tau caste markings in red. So next up I'll re-scribe the lines that need it, touch it up, paint the gold, mask off and paint the red and then it will be on to dry brushing and various weathering steps. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Had some shed time so cracked on with more work on the pulse rifle! As I said before the round bit at the front of the barrel needs to be gold, and I noticed on a lot of the images I've seen of them they have a line detail going through it at an angle, so I masked it off and carefully painted it with some gold humbrol enamel (good old original 16 metallic gold from a dusty little tin!) IMG_20220509_192138350 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220509_192658610 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next I dry brushed the black bits with some silver enamel to bring out the details and give a worn look IMG_20220509_194231258 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I rescribed the lines IMG_20220510_194514250 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220510_194530976~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And to be honest I was so happy with how that came out, thats how its staying. So I then used some graveyard dirt pigment to add shadow and grime around all the edges/lines and VERY sparingly did some fine chipping here and there with dark brown enamel applied with a sponge. IMG_20220510_195641150_HDR~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220510_195655200_HDR~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220510_195836688_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr And oh boy am I happy with that! Only minor thing that needs doing is the red squad markings I'm going to put on the barrel, other than that yeah its finished. I really thought the gun may end being the weakest part so pretty pumped, and feel like its the boost I needed to spur me on. So next up, red markings will be done on the gun as the final touch and then I resume painting the torso of the body and also now the gun is done I can start to sort out the hand that will be holding it which is the only remaining small bit of sculpting left. Hunter Rose
Bit more work done on this guy, got the sculpting tools out and got cracking on his other hand. Same as before I used my same scaled skeleton diagram to get the size and rolled a bit of clay for the palm/wrist and a seperate bit was added for the thumb IMG_20220511_185440436_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220511_185659232 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Sliced the fingers and shaped them out before cutting them to the right length. IMG_20220511_185824728 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220511_185955387_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220511_190133245_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220511_190301000 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I made it grab the gun to check how its looking and double check the size is okay. IMG_20220511_193546714 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220511_193552064 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The bottom finger in the first pick looks a bit bent, so I reworked the shape a bit IMG_20220512_185125282 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220512_185146154 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This is actually the 2nd hand I've done, had a quick go at it a few weeks back and it went terribly and looked awful! So its not always smooth sailing! Much happier this time although it didn't feel as natural as the first one, I think its just because maybe I was rushing a bit. Anyway I'm pleased with how it looks, and the plan to get it on the gun is to just slice his thumb off so I can get it back on the rifle and then just glue his thumb back on, simple solutions are always my preference! So it got backed with the cut off thumb IMG_20220512_192154537 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I just roughly held it together to check how its going to look, think this is going to be pretty massive when all together! IMG_20220512_194439199_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'll have to cut the wrist part right down at the right angle to sit in the position I want, and also I need to get the bit of armour plate on the back of the hand. I'm going to do that in greenstuff, didn't do it in clay with the rest of it because I want to make sure when it goes on it buts right up against the forearm armour as it should. Hunter Rose
Finally after a ton of DIY I've managed to get some time back on this! I really didn't like how the white went down, it looked very patchy, I think a lot of it was down to the cheap black spray paint used that turned out to be more gloss than the matt it said on the label! So to remedy this I grabbed a pot of tamiya matt white for my airbrush and sprayed it over to even it out and thankfully it worked IMG_20220602_120311632_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220602_121138885_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I brush painted over the black parts with some matt black enamel paint once the white had dried. IMG_20220603_135951127_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220603_140004260_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220604_194016361 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220605_105825839 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Only other thing I did for now was to paint the other hand just to get a base coat on it and painted over the other bits to get rid of the glass finish, IMG_20220603_140747881_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Was so annoyed with how the brushed on white went on so I'm very happy its better now and this guy is back on track. Next up I'll just continue getting the block colours down, he's mostly going to be white with some red bits but with dark and light grey to break it up a bit. Hunter Rose
Okay been making more progress with the paint, got the boots done in a dark grey, and got the first coat of red on the red bits. I'm going for a commander unit which has more red patches to signify this, he has an extra bit of armour coloured like it and he'll have a big red bit on his shield too when I do that. IMG_20220606_190251875 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I got the blue for his skin where its poking through down and painted the rim and the circle bits on the boot light grey. IMG_20220607_194243666 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Got a second coat of the red down, and painted his hoof and side claw black (that will be eventually given a gloss coat) IMG_20220607_194256360 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220607_194303993 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220609_200839862 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I decided to paint some of the armour link parts in the same pale grey that I put on the boots just to break up the white, I like how that looks so I think I'm going to paint the lower link on the thighs the same grey. I think it will look good having some grey on the other thigh part too just so it doesn't look like I put the wrong colour there! IMG_20220609_200848862_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr The armour straps were all painted in the darker grey IMG_20220609_200858560_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr And the only other thing I've done for now is to give the pouches from his belt a dry brush with grey, and they will be glued on next when they are dry. You can also see where I had a go at freehanding his caste markings which will be on his gun, shield and torso. I thought it might look good brushed on like its something they add themselves but now I'm leaning more towards masking it out I think. IMG_20220609_200910943_HDR~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next up its more painting, I was going to edge the hip and rear armour plates in grey because of the step, but i dont want to go to crazy with extra colour so might just leave them all white. Hunter Rose
Decided to go all in with the light grey! I like it and thought it would look weird to only have a few bits of it here and there. And I got the strapping on the legs and the legs themselves dry brushed just to bring out a bit of detail plus the pouches are now glued in place. IMG_20220611_160533111_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220611_160550202_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220611_160615371 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220611_160615371 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Managed to do a bit of successful surgery too, the torso wasn't quite sitting right so I cut through a section of the middle bit with a razor saw and its fine now. IMG_20220612_185358083_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220612_185443328_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr After taking this pic I thought the neck still looked a little tall so I sliced a bit off (and forgot to take a pic!) Got some grey on his hand armour and finally took the time to sort out how the gun hand will sit on the wrist, with that figured out I sliced off his wrist at the angle I need and added a bit of broken toothpick to help peg it in place. IMG_20220612_185940353 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next job is to get the armour for that hand sculpted out of greenstuff but for now I carried on getting the light grey down on the torso and the dark grey for the straps on his arms. I think because of his size all white was a little too stark for my taste, and I've always liked shades of light grey and white together on paint schemes. Next up I'll start getting his hands glued in place and make a start on the armour plate for the back of his gun hand. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Quick question if I may. Is he a soldier on parade or official escort duty, or is in a combat situation ? The reasoning for the question is if he’s on parade or escort duty his stark clean uniform makes sense. If he's in combat or coming from or going to combat. I would think his uniform would be more dirty or have that lived in look of a worn uniform. If you're planning on weathering or griming him up a bit, please disregard this. Dennis In my mind I've been imagining him as a combat troop thats got separated from his unit after a battle and is walking back to a rally point, I am planning on weathering him but I haven't decided how heavy to go. I think it will fairly light in terms of paint chipping, and I'll grime him up a little with pigments. I keep thinking about putting a bit of damage on his shoulder shield, but I'm not sure about that yet. Thanks for the interest Dennis
Hunter Rose
Right time to come skulking back in to my topic with a note from matron, sorry its been a while! But the important thing is after a bit of a hiatus and a kick up the behind I'm modelling again and actually sat down in the shed and got some more done I started by getting the Tau logo on the shield, I did this by cutting a mask on my vinyl cutter with a masking material used on cars. I laid it up on some application tape peeled away the backing and got it in place. Then I gave the grey on the bottom a second coat and decided the top looked a little naked so gave that a coat of red (I'll give it a second when dry) IMG_20220822_162943468 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Also the head and his left hand are now firmly glued in place, for the fist I put a sausage of greenstuff around so it would squige out and look like some sort of movable material join when painted black. And just to show how it looks now the hands in place so the arm is in proper proportion and popped the torso on and took a pic. Thanks for looking, more soon (seriously!)
