Have had a chance to do a bit more, I'm making good progress faffing about with this armature, I got the base layer of greenstuff down to form the 'mating' part that will ensure a nice fit of the torso armature. Put cling film down just to so it doesn't stick to it, as it doesn';t stick to cling film so I can peel it off when dry. IMG_20211101_195724267 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211102_162021835 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I over hung it a bit more than I intended so I trimmed it back here and there with a stanley knife and then made the wire bits that attach onto the upper amature IMG_20211107_153913055 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211107_154609217 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Used soft wire and more greenstuff to attach it the brass tube collar that joins the two armatures IMG_20211107_155827054 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then added a couple of more wire supports held in place with more greenstuff IMG_20211107_160415010 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211107_222822539 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after it had all dried, ta-da! A separate torso armature I can add back on later IMG_20211107_222841128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'll start bloaking out with foil using wire and super glue to keep it all tight and together. Hunter Rose
Got a chance to do some more work on the armature, I've started blocking it out so I've been wrapping him up in foil and using a combination of wire and a bit of superglue here and there to keep it as tight as I can. IMG_20211109_164046548_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_165042352 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_165503420 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_190138819 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pretty happy with that shape of him, at this point I decided to stop and leave it there, dont want to risk bulking him out too much and causing myself headaches later on when I cant shape it properly! So all I did as a last step was squish some flat bits of greens stuff over the wire and foil here and there again just to add stability and help hold it all together. IMG_20211109_191656394 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_191713294 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_191727759 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211109_192741357 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next up I can actually start adding some clay! Feel excited about that, and its cool just seeing the armature done as now I can get a proper sense of his size and overall shape. Cant wait to get cracking!! Hunter Rose
Small update to show a bit of progress I've mad a simple base to mount the torso on when I'm working on him IMG_20211113_151229329 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211113_151324423 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point it was still a little bit squishy when I pressed hard into his body, the cavity inside where it attaches needed firming up, so I decided to add clay to the inside and a thin layer to the outside which I will bake to firm it right up IMG_20211113_154005095 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211113_154011275 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I've now started adding clay just to bulk him up and start to rough out the shape IMG_20211118_164350934 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211118_165725120 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211118_173149586 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211119_185510460 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats where I've got with him so far, only other thing that delayed me a bit was my son asking if could sculpt him a little Chase figure from Paw Patrol, so I cranked this out for him! IMG_20211119_185449047 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Its nothing that will set the world of sculpture alight but for a quick sculpt I was pretty pleased and he loves it, although now he's hassling me to paint it too! So anyway, next up I will continue building up his shape and roughing out armour position and design. Thanks for looking, more soon 9

I have been working on this, and it did go slightly wrong, but I am well on the way to sorting it and didn't want to do an update until I'd started to correct it. So lets start with what went wrong! I started by fleshing out his arms and shoulders, I'm not too fussed about muscle structure as he'll be covered in clothing and armour but I do need to bear it mind for the overall shape so it looks right shape wise. IMG_20211130_184331391 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_184340160 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_184432927 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_185026613 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_185532329 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_185843961 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_190325034 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now this is where things began to really go off in the wrong direction, I built up the shoulders and was thinking ahead too far about the armour and started to build up the top of his torso to give a base for the armour collar for the head to go on. And I had to more clay to even out his torso in general and get the shape of it bulked out. IMG_20211130_190707438 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_190909767 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_191212804 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_191727456 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_192458140 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_192537765 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_192542890 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211130_192725442 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I thought it was looking a little too tapered at the top so built up the chest area some more IMG_20211202_185659355 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_191243268 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Aaaand this is where it seriously went even more wrong, you see what I didn't do was continually check what I'm doing against my reference material. I was getting carried away building up the chest and shoulders so much I hadn't realised I was making it waaay too tall and the shape of the torso was too straight at the sides with no dip in the middle so it was looking very wide as well. IMG_20211202_191708141 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_191837634 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_192034973 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_193018158 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_193121629 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I didnt notice these problems till I put the head on the torso to see how it looked, which if course meant grabbing my reference material and then having a "oh bugger" moment. You can see it looks okayish from an angle, but when its straight on it just looks wrong. IMG_20211202_194447876 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_194505158 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211202_194617046 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So after some minor dejection, I got out my scalpel and began carving and cutting away clay. IMG_20211203_195001727 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This line is where the shoulder level should be so I sliced it away and started reworking the shoulders and chest area IMG_20211204_100452338_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211204_100657352 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I also trimmed the sides to make the correct shape for the torso where it dips in IMG_20211204_101039603_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Had to build some more areas up to match the shape, and you can see its already looking a lot better. IMG_20211204_101534483_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Reshaped the chest area too now its the right proportions, again though this is going to be covered with armour, but with sculpting I think its best to get the foundations bit right so that when you're adding clothes and other layers it gives it the right look and proportions. IMG_20211204_102944410_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211204_103408174 by Nick Frost, on Flickr You can see here how overboard I went went when you see all the clay I removed in correcting it! IMG_20211204_103416812 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added the top of the hips to help with the hourglass shape of the human torso IMG_20211204_112935771 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211204_113448046 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This is how it looks now IMG_20211204_113628337 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Its waaay better than it was, but still a touch on the tall side, next up I'm going to lower the shoulder height slightly and drop the level of the arms, plus the hips are coming a bit high so they will be lowered to get that side dip in the right place as below IMG_20211204_113628337~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So it feels like its really cooking now! Will crack on and get this sorted so I can begin to suss out the armour and next bits. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Just another little update, as usual the photos dont do a good job of how much I've done! Just wanted to get the torso shape sorted so I sliced the top to lower the overall height further, and reshaped the chest and shoulders too IMG_20211207_183428858 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211207_183655408 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211207_184553963 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Really happy with how its looking now, and feeling good that I'm excited about doing this again which is great! Think thats it for the torso, I dont want to get too carried away with muscle structure when I'm covering it anyway, the overall shape is good so I can start to get the armour on. I do want to work more on the arms more now thats sorted too, the biceps need shrinking down and the forearms need beefing up slightly. Toftdale
Hi Nick, fantastic as ever. I really appreciate that you also post pictures of you're work when you're not happy with the direction it's going (looked perfect to me) and then we can see the improvements you make, which only afterwards I can recognise why you have chosen this new direction- Andy

Hunter Rose
Time for an update, been doing more on this guy, been a bit sporadic but feel like I'm starting to get somewhere now. Been fooling around with the arms trying to correct size and shape, forearms are a little skinny, biceps are a bit big and the elbow joint crease needs sorting. IMG_20211208_184936012 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211208_185121191 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211208_185257363 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211208_185809404 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211208_185838270 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I kept putting the torso on the legs and it kept niggling at me still that it wasn't quite how I wanted it to be and that something was still a bit off. IMG_20211208_190531338 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then it struck me that the shoulders are still a touch on the high side and also they are a bit wide of the body. So I cut away some clay to change the height and create my edge for the armor he's wearing, I even had to cut away some of the blocking foil, think I got a bit carried away with it! IMG_20211219_115821905 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I had to add some clay to the under arm to further lower the shoulder level and keep the arm thickness the same as what it was. IMG_20211219_115957606 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211219_120310391 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211219_120909605 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Already much happier with that but still think the shoulders are a touch wide of where they should be, so I smoothed over the top at a tighter angle to the armour so it appears that the top of the shoulder is under the armour and this is how it looked. IMG_20211220_190557696 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Much better I think, I'm finally not got any niggling feelings when I look at it! So I marked out the collar area and gouged out some clay, I want to get the head into position to see how I need to adjust the neck before I bake it. So I checked it against my reference and sliced off a chunk of the neck to get it at the right position when in place. IMG_20211221_185408974 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I put it in place for a final check that I'm happy with the torso IMG_20211221_185632496 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211221_185934123 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats all looking fine to me, very happy! So now finaly I can get cracking with his armour, so the only other thing I've done is start to mark out where the edges will be. IMG_20211221_192210966 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So armour is next, also I'm going to bake the head, think I might paint it too just as a bit of a break from the sculpting and to mix it up a bit. We'll see. Speaking of painting I'm not, as I said, a GW expert by ANY stretch of the imagination and cant seem to find any decent references for what the T'au eyes are like. From what I can gather they are just all red, but if anyone can shed any light I would really appreciate it! Hunter Rose
Oh man I finally feel like I'm hitting my stride with this torso! Had a good couple of sessions so sharing my progress. I started by rolling out some clay to create the lip that shows the edge of the armour where it will meet the soft under clothing round his midriff IMG_20211226_184508180 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_184610414 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I filled the gaps and smoothed the whole thing over and did the same for the other side. IMG_20211226_184818245 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_185013706 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_185559705 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_185713398 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_185954853 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_190343682 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I rolled out and cut the piece that will go over his lower abdomen and be sectioned like the groin armour it will line up with. IMG_20211226_192401590 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_192822524 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211226_192509141 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next time I hit the clay, I thought that bit of lower armour was a bit off and noticed a dip that was making it look weird, so I lifted it and put some clay down to fill it IMG_20211226_192822524 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211227_185149697 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211227_185251547 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I also noticed that his chest was a little sunk on one side so the thickness of the armour was affected giving a weird shadow that also made it look off so I added a flat piece to correct that IMG_20211227_185853410 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211227_185858329 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211227_190622762 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I moved on top the back, I will be creating a bit more of an interesting shape to the lower edge similar to the front but I haven't quite thought of how I want it to look, so for now I'm making a flat edge that will be a base to work from later. First I noticed another dip so filled that to correct the symmetry. Hunter Rose
Right finally getting a chance to do an update, I've been making good progress with this guy. I was thinking of doing an indentation in the same trapazoid shape I've used across all the armour links and cut outs, but after marking it all out I decided to continue with the same collar lip around the whole thing, so rolled and cut some bits for that. IMG_20211228_153025127 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_153301097 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_153419305 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_184325462 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_184338908 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_184352647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_184519205 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_184805718 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_185359445 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_185650086 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pretty pleased with that, just had to neaten up the corners a bit and even them out, I use a scalpel to cut bits away and then always add slightly more clay so when I blend it in I dont end up with a dip. Bumps can be pressed in if needed but dips require more clay and blending the extra in can mean redoing other details too. IMG_20211228_185744985 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_190051931 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Just to be sure I'm happy, now the head is baked I often put it in place to check the overall look IMG_20211228_190133867 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_190456882 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now the collar detail is sorted, I moved on to the back detailing. I want to give the impression of a flexible strip to the spine, its all pie in the sky of course and I'm kind of making this up as I'm not giving him a backpack that you sometimes see on the t'au troops. I'm trying to keep to the t'au look as much as I can but I want to give it my own twist as well. So I marked out where I need it to be trying to keep everything central and even by using my calipers. IMG_20211228_190857466 by Nick Frost, on Flickr When Im making panel lines on the armour, I start by using a scalpel lightly on the surface then when I'm sure of position I have a thicker blade shaped (but not sharp) tool that widens the final lines. IMG_20211228_191129010 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_191321137 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The armour detailing will have trapezoid links so I'm giving it a full cutaway in the same shape at the bottom too. IMG_20211228_191639506 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_191842985 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_192219569 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211228_192736337 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I began marking out where the link divisions would be. IMG_20211229_190517444 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_191238559 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_191647647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I added some little rivet/screw (?) holes for details too IMG_20211229_192442705 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then as break from that I moved on to the torso front and freehanded to circle detail, I didn't have anything I could draw around so I marked the centre and the quarter points then used the scalpel lightly draw it then neaten it. IMG_20211229_193325964 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_193525205 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_193750378 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after giving a think to the back detail, I finished it off. I wasn't sure if I should add some strips to the outside on to the armour to blend in for an edge, or cut away some from the inside to get an edge. Both options seemed a bit unsatisfactory as they would involve plenty of smoothing which potentially could screw some of it up and lead to a lot more work. In the end I opted to add a strip of clay where the spine section meets the armour, think it adds another level of detail and avoids the whole other situation while looking good. So I rolled some clay and got it in place. IMG_20211229_194542687 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_194542687 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211229_195235053 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then with that done I moved back to the front and added the side dsetail that is on the circular section of the t'au armour. IMG_20211230_184349028 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211230_184803458 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Theres a seam line that comes out from the circle bit which steps down before going under the arm, so I got that all marked out and cut in. IMG_20211230_184908381 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211230_185429869 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211230_190428449 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211230_190437970 by Nick Frost, on Flickr In the above photo I wasn't happy with how the line looked on the right, its perfectly straight, but looks off as it goes over a dip, which bugs the heck out of me so I had to fill and smoothe that over then redo the detail. IMG_20211231_094517149 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_094708674 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_094835761 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_095238258 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_095316583 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_100628995_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20211231_101032986 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats better, very happy! Before I sorted it out I took a photo with the torso on the legs with the head to get a sense of how its going. IMG_20211230_190853890~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Feeling really great about this now, theres still loads to do but I feel like I can see a light at the end of the tunnel! Next up I'll do the armour link sections on his lower abdomen armour. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Another quick update, I got the lower abdominal armour detailed up. I started by marking out where I wanted them to be, then used my tools to mark out the deep lines for the links and smooth away the marks to help space it out. As the armour is tapered I wanted the links to change size as it went up to match that. Hunter Rose
Been making speedy progress with the creases on the torso, I enjoyed getting back to doing more of them. Started by rolling some sausages and pressing them in to rough out where I want them. IMG_20220101_184211070 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I used one of my metal dental tools to squidge the edges into the surface to get them pressed in place and begin blending them in. IMG_20220101_184641341 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once I get them blended in I use my soft silicone blending brush to shape and smooth them over. IMG_20220101_185136572 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added a few more creases as the first ones looked a bit too spaced out which can make them seem a bit unnatural. IMG_20220101_185636653 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220101_185801580 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220101_185831326 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The larger cerease I added at the bottom was a little large, so to shape it and remove some I used the ball stylus tool. IMG_20220101_190053307 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I have to use the silicone brush to sooth it, the ball stylus leaves a lot of marks when you use it, its not really for smoothing. IMG_20220101_190335532 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I wanted to add a direction change to the creases so added what I call a "tick" crease to act as a transitional crease where the angles change/meet IMG_20220101_190514063 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220101_191247762 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220101_191253509 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then with the back ones done I moved around to the side and carried on/ IMG_20220102_184542754 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_185102058 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_185150226 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_185542641 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_185707662 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_190335260 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_190350308 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_190411042 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once I looked at the front the creases didn't quite look right some how, maybe a bit too spaced out? But I then just used my silicone brush to creat some more creases with dips. IMG_20220102_190618178 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220102_191004312 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Think thats much better, and looks more natural with their being some detail going in as well as in relief. And then I carried on with the other side. IMG_20220103_090752538 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_091254598 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_091649575 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_092515363 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_092934584 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_092945766 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats that bit sorted! Feel pretty pumped about how its looking, I really like doing the creases. Next up I can move on to the arms, so he needs elbow pads, a small pad for his right shoulder (the other shoulder has a very large shield which will be made seperately) and of course more creases for the material. Hunter Rose
Oh forgot to say, in the last picture you can see I also thickened up the line around the circle in the chest and tidied it up a bit
voozet
From the content of the thread, I concluded that this is your first sculpture (although I might have misunderstood something because my English is pathetic). It's hard to believe because it's really good. And indeed this thread can serve as a step by step tutorial.
Hunter Rose
Thank you Voozet! It's actually my second, the first one took me over 4 years, the posing was a lot more complex than this and I sculpted the base as well. I just really enjoy doing it so appreciate the compliments. Hunter Rose
Okay so I have been doing more on the fire warrior, so time to update! I wanted to get the right shoulder pad done, when I started though I noticed the arm was a bit thin at the top and needed bulking out so I added some clay. IMG_20220103_185537251 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_185914687 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I put a square piece of clay on to begin blending it in and shaping. IMG_20220103_190020135 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_190520912 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_190611249 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_190838025 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_190952897 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_191512732 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_191525513 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_191607366 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_192016811 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_192034760 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I wasn't sure I really liked it to be honest, thought it looked a bit too small and disconnected from the body armour even though it matches the knee pad design. But while I was thinking about that I wanted to pad out the neck hole with some bits of clay just to llok like creased up material and give the head a firm resting place. IMG_20220103_192427183 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_192902080 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220103_193648758 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I got the head in to get a good tight fitting shape for the head by really pressing the neck in. IMG_20220103_193817613 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I got the torso on to the body just to check how its looking. IMG_20220105_190519260 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Yeah and when it was all together I really started to not like the shoulder pad, it did look a bit small, and I was thinking of doing it so it overhanged but then I thought I just wanted to do something different that looked more fitting. So instead of a seperate shoulder pad I decided to give the armour a kind of fixed shoulder plate. First thing to do was rip off the old one and then roll out some clay and cut it to shape using the same similar trapezoid design used throughout. IMG_20220107_183933629 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_184106592 by Nick Frost, on Flickr When I cut the corners off I used the offcut as a guide for the other to ensure they match. IMG_20220107_184146980 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_184554975 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_184815607 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Already very pleased with the new look, so I did the same for the other side. IMG_20220107_185137232 by Nick Frost, on Flickr But when I moved to the pther arm I noticed that wis set back a bit more then it should be compared to the other, so I cut some clay from the back and added it to the front. IMG_20220107_185306267 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_185846439 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_185906652 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_185943805 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I had to add some clay to the underside to match the other armpit too. IMG_20220107_190101631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_190425422 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_190433390 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats all sorted now I can get the shoulder lip on IMG_20220107_190739215 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_190755434 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_191336059 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220107_191348957 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now both of those are done, next up I'll move on to the elbow pads. Corsairfoxfouruncle
I have to say very impressive work so far. The revision of the shoulder pad looks better so you're definitely on the right path. Keep up the great work, will be looking forward to more progress. Appreciate the interest Bit more progress from yesterday, I was looking at the shoulders and upper arm and thought that I hadn't defined the shoulders enough which was making him look like he had weirdly long biceps to my eye. So I just shaved away some clay with my scalpel and smoothed it over to help define it. IMG_20220108_153755433 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_153812611 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_154332886 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_155103591 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_155110366 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With that done I made a start on his elbow pads, so I rolled out some clay and cut a couple of squares and started with the one on his right arm. IMG_20220108_160956593 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pressed it on and then blended in the edges to the arm to get it firmly in place, decided against cutting the triangular profile into it until its in place because its going on to a rounded surface which would distort it anyway. IMG_20220108_160956593 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_161418677 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_161628168 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So once firmly in place I got the scalpel and carefully cut its profile shape as neatly as I could and squared it up where it needed it. IMG_20220108_161927749 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_162004329 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_162502702 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I rolled more clay and cut the strap that goes round the arm, for the bent one I did this as two pieces as it needs to appear squashed in his bent arm. IMG_20220108_163434937 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_163531337 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_163711408 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_163858906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_184247328 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_184733221 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_185251914 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Before starting the next one his left arm was a little bumpy with some dips and marks, so I raked the surface over to even it out and smoothed it over with my finger IMG_20220108_190833060 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_190927366 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220108_191122631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I grabbed the other square of clay I cut and began the process of doing the elbow pad in the same way as the other IMG_20220109_123157180 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I remembered I had trimmed the other one a bit where it distorted on the elbow so used my calipers to get it the same size. IMG_20220109_123809674 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_124101722_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_124727745 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I rolled more clay to cut the strap, this was more straight forward as its just one bit around the arm. IMG_20220109_125027526 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_143843431 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_144601766 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Sweet so elbow pads sorted, couldn't resist getting the head on to check how hes looking! IMG_20220109_145757306_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now its time to move on to some creases, started by laying them out where I wanted them and then blended and smoothed them in IMG_20220109_190124885 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_191230643 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_191829328 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_190950374 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_192058794 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_192347713 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220109_192839462 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats where I got to, next I'll tweak the creases and then before moving on to the forearm I'll get the extended cuff of his gauntlets/gloves in place so I'm not wasting time putting creases that will be covered. Hunter Rose
Made some more progress with this guy over the last few days, time to update! Started by rolling and cutting out a piece of clay for the cuff of his gloves, which I rolled round and then after cutting off the excess blended together. IMG_20220110_185815151 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220110_185941182 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220110_190138355 by Nick Frost, on Flickr From looking at the miniatures the fire warriors glove have a cut out piece with lines that line up with the armour pad that goes on the top of the palm. So I marked that out and then cut away a piece of the cuff. IMG_20220110_190450363 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220110_190916848 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220110_191118941 by Nick Frost, on Flickr On the miniature there was a couple of raised little dots on the back of the cuff (who knows what they are supposed to be at that scale!) but I decided to put a couple of details in with the my ball stylus, so marked out the position then carefully pressed in the stylus to create two dips. IMG_20220111_184017084 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220111_184420944 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I gave the whole thing a seam detail IMG_20220111_185006266 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220111_185221082 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once that was done I could add the creases to the forearm IMG_20220111_185526407 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220111_190817108 by Nick Frost, on Flickr While blending them in I also added the seam detail to the bit I missed on the cuff, and carried on the creases on the other side. IMG_20220111_191507508 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_190014372 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_190928140 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_191505371 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I noticed the tops of the wrists are a bit rounded on the end without a sharp edge, which is what I really want for when I add the hands, so I rolled a thin sausage of clay and placed it around the edge to be able to blend and create a crisper edge. IMG_20220112_191608926 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_191731295 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_192026970 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220112_192226360 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then it was time to do the one on the other side, first thing I had to do was cut off a section of his arm as after checking it was slightly longer than the other side, then I followed the same steps as above. IMG_20220114_190124897 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_190128484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_190441915 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_190725750 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_190927759 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_191334934 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_191650925 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_194011259 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220114_194310365 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And there we are, two cuffs done! Now I need to add the creases to the left arm, not going to go too crazy on the upper arm as most of it will be covered by the large arm shoulder they have on that side. Before I do that though, in the next update I'm going to practice sculpting a hand in preparation for doing his to get a feel for it, sculpting hands is a first for me and its a little daunting but I am doing lots of research and checking out some videos so I'm looking forward to having a go. Really glad to hear I inspired you to give it a go, all efforts with sculpting usually start with something bad or at least far from perfect, and that is just the start point. If you check my first sculpture wip post the first attempt at a face/head at the beginning was really awful! You just have to keep practicing and refining what you create and doing lots of research with how to vids. 4 hours ago, Lazy Modeller said: If this is your second figure, I take my hat off! Cheers LM Thank you LM appreciate the kind words, and your interest Okay so another update, in this I'm not really doing a bit for this guy, I'm just sculpting a small hand without worrying about scale for now just to get a feel for it. Found this to be the most daunting bit so far, so watched a few videos and got a sense in my head of how best I'm going to go about it and then this is what I did. Started by rolling a cylinder shape of sculpey and then squashing one end with my fingers to define the palm/fingers area (the head is in the background because at one point I was going to use this to scale the hand but then decided to ease of the pressure and just sculpt and see what happens) IMG_20220115_184805302 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_184956769 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then at the same time as pinching it flat I again just used my fingers to narrow and shape what would be the wrist, then rolled a kind of carrot shape to be the thumb and corresponding muscle for it on the palm. IMG_20220115_185509264 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This was blended in at the edges with one of my tools and then I used the silicone brush to do a neat smooth blend. IMG_20220115_185705146 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_185924123 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then just using my own hand as a reference I marked out a line where I thought the bottom of the fingers should go and then used a scalpel just to slice through to create them. IMG_20220115_190204884 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now at this point I'm not worried if the fingers are too long and too even, I'm just trying to get them rounded after being cut square with the scalpel, and am even stretching them a bit to help get a nice rounded finger shape. IMG_20220115_190333448 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_190709797 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I used my silicone brushes between the fingers to help blend that area, and once I was happy enough with it at this stage I trimmed the finger lengths, again just using my own fingers as a rough guide. Then I rounded the ends that had been cut and pinched the end of the thumb to help shape it. IMG_20220115_190838768 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_191224652 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_191446978 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_191502447 by Nick Frost, on Flickr If you look at your hand, between the bottom of the little finger and you wrist the side of your hand bulges out, so I just pinched the side to help create this shape and just kept working the shapes of the fingers and smoothing everything over till I was happy with how they were looking. IMG_20220115_191635128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_192204991 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_192212174 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then there is a thinner part of the face of your palm in a kind of curved triangle area from around the thumb muscle and below the bottom of finger joints. So I used and angled loop tool to carve out that part. IMG_20220115_192639708 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_192748814 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_192755654 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I pinched the ends of the fingers to help give them a better shape, then rolled some little circles to add for knuckles IMG_20220115_193125484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_193240874 by Nick Frost, on Flickr These were then blended in the same way as the thumb I added, I blended in between them down from between the finger with my silicone brush to help create the slight indentations of the tendons. IMG_20220115_193343948 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_193350714 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_193502659 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_193613713 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_194054412 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_194104301 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats where I left it, didn't want to get too carried away with skin detail oranything as its gloved hands I'm doing. IMG_20220115_194410071 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20220115_194432628 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I wasn't planning on using it but I did check just in case it was the right size, but no its a bit too big. Which is fine, think I'm okay with making another, it'll be good to have as a reference. I have learned a few things from it too, I put the knuckles too far down the fingers, they need to be on the top of the palm area, and I think the thumb is a little fat, but they are easy enough to sort out on a new hand. Really glad I took my time to do some practice, defineitely feel a lot bett about doing the final hands, though next I think I'll finish all the creases on the left arm before doing the left hand. Then once I've done that I'll have to make his pulse rifle before doing the right hand to get the grip on it just right, lots to do still but feels so close to the end now!
