Now that made me chuckle... 😀

 and thankfully he's now back from the land of pixies!

First thing I did for this sculpt session was remove the side spur which will be repositioned further up on what would be his ankle on a human

And before I did anything else I wanted to work on the structure of the foot and lower leg more, began by making the bend of the back of the foot more sharp and defined, before adding in some calf muscle to shape it.

Once I got that smoothed over I repositioned the ankle spur and smoothed it into position

Aaaand finally time to correct the hooves, I sliced down through curve to flatten them off and immediately felt so much better about them!

Much happier with how it looks now, probably isn't that noticeable but I also narrowed the spread of the hoof on the outide so it didn't appear to spread quite as muc, which I think also made it look soft somehow.  I also added back in the slits but far fewer this time

And now its looking a lot better than it did, heres a few pics to show the overall shape of the foot and lower leg

Theres a lot more detail to add to the foot but at this point now I'm happy with it I'm going to copy all I've done so far to the other side, which is the part I love! (not)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right, been sculpting some more.

I've started on the other foot, had to build up the shape to match the other one before I started on the hooves

When I'm copying I find it very handy as well as looking at it from lots of angles to use a pair of calipers to check size and thickness of certain bits to be sure you're on the right track

Smoothing over the balls that will make the hooves and I keep checking here as I'm building up the shape to make sure I'm not making the foot any shorter/longer

51088543732_ac9565ae7f_c.jpgIMG_20210401_191736_1 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then the tricky job of matching the hoof shapes to the first ones

51088527489_0dff717104_c.jpgIMG_20210401_192934 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And once I added in some splits to them I was pretty happy with how they compared

51089000108_0cff255744_c.jpgIMG_20210401_193649 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then the next tricky bit was matching the shape of the calf muscle, so I started adding clay and blending, and again its important to keep looking around at all angles as you do this to ensure you're getting a good match

51090296756_329aa4a8fd_c.jpgIMG_20210402_100328 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

As I blend Im also again using the silicone blending brush to remove tool marks and help keep it smooth

51090381252_2194e0ffba_c.jpgIMG_20210402_100429 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

51090296611_017aa115f3_c.jpgIMG_20210402_101407 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Shaping up nicely at this point, the calf muscles need to be a pretty good match as they will mostly make up the smooth leather half chap boots he has, the resut of the leg from there up will have a lot more room for error as they will have folds of material sculpted over the top, so I'm taking my time with these bits to ensure iM happy with it.

51090371129_3df93e7751_c.jpgIMG_20210402_101417 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then it was time to match up the ankle spur

51090371049_226be4739b_c.jpgIMG_20210402_184631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After lining it up I followed the same process of smoothing the edge, then rolling a thin sausage to go round to form an edge

51090380822_7aa6cd4876_c.jpgIMG_20210402_184855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

51090380817_2b9a1a781c_c.jpgIMG_20210402_185139 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

At this point I was very happy with the shape and thought it looked waaay better than the original one, it was more stubby and looked more like a spur (the first I think was looking more like a finger!) So before adding the detail I removed the original one and made it look like the new one then detailed them both

51091718616_90654138b4_c.jpgIMG_20210403_135319 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Aaaand thats where I'm up to with him! Next up I'm going to add the top of the leather boot and add a side seam and these half sphere details that the Tau have on their boots.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Found time to sculpt today between stuffing my face with chocolate and egg hunting with the kids in the garden!

Started by rolling out some sausages to become the tops of the boots

51094352174_b794cc3097_c.jpgIMG_20210404_114551 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then after rolling them with the handle of one of my tools to flatten I added them to where I want the tops of the boots to be, then slightly blended in the bottom edge to help hold it in place.

51094815288_cf5e2ceb99_c.jpgIMG_20210404_131054 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then came the seam detail for the side

51094815173_494ea0fedf_c.jpgIMG_20210404_132614 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I rolled out some balls and cut them in half so I knew they would be equal for the dome details on the outside of the boots

51094272751_9b6075c519_c.jpgIMG_20210404_133204 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And once I had done the seam for the other boot I lined them up in position and then blended the sides in to hold them in position

51094366972_e6d5b3cef5_c.jpgIMG_20210404_135829 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then once they were blended and fully secure I put back in the seams which now go around the dome details

51094366757_6e5fbf3d76_c.jpgIMG_20210404_140530 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I did the same thing for the other side

51094271951_39259004b7_c.jpgIMG_20210404_141103 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Also again the way I'm trying to get it extra smooth on the join is with silicone blending brush which is great substitute for my bulky fingers!

And withthat they are both done

So next up I can move on up the leg starting by building up the creased underclothes that will be bulging out from his boot boot tops and moving up to his knee pads

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Just finished another sculpt session, made a start on the creases.

Was a bit hesitiant about doing these, I've looked up lots of reference material for creased clothing but couldn't find much in the way of hard and fast ways to go about sculpting them so just jumped right into it.

Started by building up what will be the material of his trousers to give the clear indication that its bulging out from the top of the tight boots and is a different material.

I rolled a couple of different thickness bits around the top to ensure a more gradual fade in thickness from the bulge.

51097150122_aa08da2ecf_c.jpgIMG_20210405_115907 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Added a bit more clay to the upper calf area just to bulk it out more so it doesn't look strange when I start working on that area, also at this point I was thinking I was going to add material and then make the creases by pressing into it

51097134964_ca43ff6ac5_c.jpgIMG_20210405_120000 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Which is what I started here on the below pic with the bits at the top of the boot, but I was really not happy with that

51097858305_7971480d73_c.jpgIMG_20210405_183436 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

A lot of what I had looked at basically just seemed to suggest if it looks right its right, and aslo I started thinking if you're going to do it you need to be bold and rerally commit to it so I just added a load of clay in a way that felt right to me and started blending

Seriously happy with that, was very apprehensive going into the creases but stuck with it and im pleased with how its looking. I think creases are one of those things that dont have a hard and fast rule, you just have to eyeball it.

Next up I'm going to probably start on the other leg and get it to a similar point and then carry on with both up to the knee so I can add the knee guards. You can always tell when I'm not sure if somethings going to go right as I'll focus on just one limb for a while to be sure!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Been up to my eyes sculpting creases and really enjoying it! So time for an update

Started by beginning the crease process on the right leg, so I started by sculpting the same bulge from the top of the boots, and builing up the top of the calf in the same way

51101486491_0282fc3047_c.jpgIMG_20210406_194247 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

51101584212_d787891f25_c.jpgIMG_20210406_194631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I started adding creases with sausages of clay I can then blend in at the edges

51101567024_aa273c2f31_c.jpgIMG_20210406_200109 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Back of the leg was looking bare so I decided to add a big dramatic one!

The silicone blending brush I use has really come into its own on this sculpt, didn't use them much on the last sculpt but for the creases its been really great to use for blending and shaping.

I've been trying not to leave big gaps between the creases as that looks weird and not right to my eye, so I add smaller creases in between

51101566884_84ef8cf15d_c.jpgIMG_20210406_201057 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

51101485916_5789f21d47_c.jpgIMG_20210406_201229 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The knee was looking a bit thin too so I began bulking it out at the front and back

51102539175_95558f0bc6_c.jpgIMG_20210406_202741 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

At this point I started thinking about the knee guards he wears, didn't want to go to crazy before I added them so I can shape the creases around them accordingly, so I cut away a bit to make an overhang of material

51101486031_e566c3b3d3_c.jpgIMG_20210406_203636 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then cut a slab of clay to start builing up the knee guard itself

51101566184_474ce9f3fa_c.jpgIMG_20210406_204521 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then had to cut away a bit more to get it in position

51102538510_3761efe341_c.jpgIMG_20210406_204724 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Filled and smoothed the sides to help bind it and hold its shape

That was the end of the night before lasts session, and I came away feeling slightly unsatisfied, kept looking at the pictures and the sculpt and when I came back to it last night I decided the knee pad was too narrow, and I really need to up the creases, especially as I still felt the knee itself was a little thin.

So first thing I did was rip of the knee guard and add more clay to widen it then got it back into position

Much happier once that was on, liked it it a lot more. Then I wanted to add another large crease to the inside of calf top to helo begin the process of widening the knee.

Then added more clay to the sides of the knee to help build it up, smoothed it quite roughly to also shape it into creases at the same time

Also tried to keep definition of the knee guard as I went too by defining the edge as I went

Aaaand thats where Im up to! Had a blast with the creases and got way further than I thought I would which is good. I'll do more to the right leg but before that I'll get the left leg to the same point.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Nick, Awesome and Bad bottom in equal quantities, Mate.

Love the hooves, boots and the creases. I too thought the knee pads too narrow, so good catch!

I'm looking forward to more. I hope you've recovered from the Easter choc fest!

Time for another update, been carried away with sculpting and kept forgetting to update so theres a fair few pics!

Started building up creases on the other leg

Then started making the second knee guard in the same way as the first, combination of cutting and smoothing. I tend to use a scalpel blade for square edges for a crisp edge.

Got it in position and then packed out the edges and blended it in to fix it in place

It stuck out a bit but that was because I still need to build out the material and add creases, so started with a big one on the side

Was happy with how it was looking but at this point before I think about going up into the thigh I need to do some building up of the legs a bit, most importantly I need to sort out his crotch and inner thighs as his groin is way higher than it should be.

So began building it up after marking what level it should be by putting my skeleton size guide I used to make the armature and comparing it to an antomy drawing I have which is also split into "heads"

51110372265_78dc0f900d_c.jpgIMG_20210410_155033 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I rolled a couple of balls of clay which I will roll flat to build out the inner thigh

51109341574_ec723d9fc2_c.jpgIMG_20210410_155809 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Was a little thick to start with so I thinned it out and made a matching piece for the other leg

51109594416_4751656afd_c.jpgIMG_20210410_170637 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The right leg needed a little more fleshing out where it tapered to the knee so added more clay and blended it in

51109498698_f6f76b7084_c.jpgIMG_20210410_172208 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

It was at that point I noticed with the blending and smoothing I think I moved the knee guard off position, so was time for a bit of surgery to cut and remove it, move it up and then blend it all in again and bulk out the creases where there is now a gap.

Then I noticed that the first was a bit fat compared to the new one so I shaved it down with a scalpel

51109339724_b5fe47a5b9_c.jpgIMG_20210411_142357 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The corner was looking a little rounded so I added a bit to blend in which will be bigger just so I can then cut it down to get a sharp corner in line with the sides again

And then (man oh man!) noticed the last one I did was looking a little narrow again so added a bit more to make it even with the first

51109592366_3676a6b8fa_c.jpgIMG_20210411_143649 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then added somore creases to help blend it all together

At this point as the creases were moving futher I up I decided I better sort out the straps for the knee guards so I can properley tie them in with the creases so they are part of them and pressing in as they should be rather than left sitting on the top of them.

SO rolled out some flat clay then cut a strap and after sizing it round the leg cut it to size and blended the edges in to fix it in place.

51110369335_a06237712f_c.jpgIMG_20210411_155344 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Used the blending tool to make a divit where it will be pressing onto a crease

At this point before I did the strap for the other leg I thoght the knee still looked a little narrow so I built it out with some clay and aslo added more creases

So thats where he's at, pretty pleased with how its looking, next up I'll move up to thighs, going to start by again getting the structure sorted first, need to get his buttocks on (steady!) and then think about the armour plate positioning for his upper thigh before yet more creases can be put in place.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Update! Right before I move on to the thighs there are a couple of tweaks I need to make.

First up was this crease to no where which looked a little too horizontal, so I moved it so it ends/starts up at the top of where the knee pad meets the strap

51128086087_154e92a61c_c.jpgIMG_20210415_190819 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

That was better but then created a bit of wide open plain area so I added another bulge of crease into it.

51128045456_e8a0541f84_c.jpgIMG_20210415_190847 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

51128045326_44c9aba9b4_c.jpgIMG_20210415_192034 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then the left knee was still really bugging me, it looked too thin, I went back through my photos and compared when I added clay to them both and could see the bit I added to the top of his calf muscle was much larger, so I decided to add a lot more clay. I didn't want to totally redo all my crease work though, so I bulked out the creases and built up areas between.

Oh also I added some detail to the strapping of the knee guards.

And with that done I'm much happier with the front profile, now its time to build up the top of the calf itself

51129160125_247aefebe9_c.jpgIMG_20210419_193140 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So thats now complete and finally I'm happy with both legs and how they compare! Now its time to move up, again though theres a little bit of structural work to do first.

Here is the profile, I still need to build out the back of thigh/buttocks area and his midriff

51128085022_71694c8b7c_c.jpgIMG_20210419_193206 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Its a little spongy at the top and I want to neaten it up a bit and also add strength, so I cut away a lof of the excess foil and pressed some greenstuff in which will help when its solid.

51128084832_98ed8fa5e9_c.jpgIMG_20210420_190825 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And when thats dry, I'll build out the waist and thighs and once the shape is looking good I'll begin adding more creases and the large armor plates that go over the fronts of his thighs.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right update time.

Some ups and downs in this one, first the downs; I made a start on building up his behind and crotch both of which need to be done so anything added over the top looks right.

And to be completely honest, I wasn't happy at all with what I did to the point of genuine embarrassment and I seriously considered not showing it as I was so bummed out about it (no pun intended!)

I'll just get those pics out of the way and show what I did a couple of days ago, I started by building up the shape of his behind

After that I used up my first box of clay so had to crack open a new one and continued building up his waist shape, and trying to ensure his gluteus maximus was taking the correct shape

His abdomen was looking like it needed to slope out more and the top of his behind go in more to help with the body shape. So I built up the abdomen and crotch area to help with that

I was happier with the profile but it was at this point I realised that his buttocks were starting too low on his thigh, so I added some clay

At this point I stopped and was as I mentioned at the start feeling a bit crap about it, it just didn't look right and I just felt like I'd added a ridiculous looking massive rear end and a misplaced silly crotch.

I still wanted to show this though if nothing else just to show that it isn't always plain sailing, and whats the point of showing your process if your going to miss out the mistakes which can sometimes be the most useful things to learn by.

This is the time when you need to do a lot of research into proportions and anatomy, which is what I did. I tried to find a lot of images to help guide me through the thigh and rear muscle shape and see why it wasn't looking right to me.

So what I eventually realised was that I had missed a crucial step; I hadn't thickened out the thighs before moving up to the waist and rear end which is why his rear looks too big. Plus the fact it doesn't help that his buttocks now start too low and shouldn't transition so smoothly, there needs to be a slight step.

The other major thing which was making the crotch look so ridiculous to my eye was that his inner thighs also needed thickening to lower the point where his legs meet, there is too much of a wide gap there.

So armed with that knowledge, I attacked him again with a new box of clay and began correcting what I hath made crooked.

Started by toning down his crotch and thickening the upper inner thighs

51140595010_5763323f2c_c.jpgIMG_20210425_153855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then just began rolling out clay to build up all around the thighs.

With the basic structure of the thigh now complete I began sorting out his buttocks, in the above pictures you probably noticed two lines on his rear, the top is level with his crotch and the bottom is where buttocks should meet the upper thigh.

The other major thing that helped me to sort this out was I had basically done the rear end right across the width of his thighs, which is wrong; they only go about two thirds of the way across and the flatten off on the sides.

So using my scalpel I cut a step to define the buttock beginning and shave down the edge of the buttocks to start giving it a more realistic shape.

Then used my smoothing tool to round it all off and help blend it a bit.

Was happy with how it was going but just needed to sort out top a bit, it should dip slightly where they meet the spine so I built the tops up a bit with more clay

So so much happier now, I only have one more thing to do and thats just to add a bit more to round them off a bit as they look a little flat in the profile.

But overall thats a total turn around from how I felt a few days ago! I know this isn't going to be a nude figure, but things like this need to be done to help subsequent detail like clothes and creases look correct and sit properly. Its so much easier to do that than try to sculpt your clothes to shape in one go, in the same way that taking time to get the proportions of your armature 100% spot on to start with makes your proportion work later less of an uphill struggle.

Its been a good learning experience for me too as its shown the traps you can fall into if you dont keep checking and rechecking your reference material and proportions from all angles.

Next up will be the final little bit of shaping to his rear and then I'll start work on his thigh armor.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Given the number of pictures on here I am SO glad we don't have dial up nowadays!

Yes, the buttocks look better now, but, to my eye the crotch has more than a hint of Blackadder to it.

I have no idea what the anatomy of these beings is, but this guy needs an armour plated Cricket box to look after that lot!

Yeah it is a bit pic heavy, I think my subconscious has its own plans to make a flick book!

Funnily enough from his belt down to his crotch is more armour plating that will cover it, perhaps its there for containment more than protection!

Woof!

Finally got his unmentionables sorted! Started by sorting out his derrière, just added some clay to get the shape of them sorted so they werent so flat.

Then I wanted to sort out his belt, with the armor I think it will help me to get it all placed how I want by starting with the belt and the crotch armor before the thighs.

So rolled out a bit of clay and got it all cut to size

51143144972_6f25b142b0_c.jpgIMG_20210427_185934 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Just needed to add a little to his lower back to get it to sit right when in place,

Then I cut a piece of clay roughly the hsape of the thigh armour and held it in place to check out how it would sit with the crotch armour.

Then after that I didnt like the shape of the crotch armour, I wanted it to be more square so I decided to straighten the sides and flatten the bottom.

Then after rolling the clay a bit thinner and getting a neater shape I started to sort out the thigh armour and get it fixed in position

Its quite a wide area of clay so to help hold it in place and get good contact with the leg I pressed it in place and then stabbed through with my blending tool to create some fixed points which I then blended over.

Aaand thats where he's up to, the thigh armour may look slightly thick, and the belt, but I've purposely done that because I'm going to build up the clothing layer more with creases and stuff so I dont want it getting swamped and then looking way too thin. Probably going to add more shape and build up on the thighs too, this is just kind of marking the area at this point.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

He's going to need belt and braces to hod those trousers up with all that armour!

Looking good, and I like that you're staying flexible and changing things as you go.
