For this kind of work I can live with the time gaps as the results make it worthwhile.

Appreciate the compliment, thank you!

Wow, I missed heaps of progress. Looking good, still much bigger than mine! It's weird seeing all these familiar shapes forming out of the raw stuff of creation.

Thanks Will, hes getting there gradually! Yeah its always a good feeling sculpting something out of nothing, and I'm considering painting a small tau unit in the same scheme just for a size comparison when it goes in to the RFI!

Managed to get a lot of time in the shed over the weekend, so made some good progress.

Started by using some graveyard dirt pigment powder to add grime/shadow and to fill my panel lines. The legs were first.

Once I'd got that done I used a piece of sponge in some tweezers with some very dark brown enamel paint to sparingly add some paint chips.

Gave his footwear the pigment treatment too

And with that done it was on to the torso for the same treatment.

Then I added the chipping, and again I want to be VERY sparing with this, he's got such large areas of white I think it would be very easy to over do the whole thing and make it look a mess!

And with all that done the only other little thing I finally made a start on is the bit of armour plate for the back of his gun hand, for this I used greenstuff so rolled some up and then blobbed it on to his hand, then carved it in to shape using a scalpel blade dipped in vaseline (its pretty sticky stuff!)

So pumped at making some good headway, next up I'll airbrush over some testors dulcote to even out the finish and seal in the pigment powder.

Then the last major job I need to get cracking with is the base, so I need to get his legs glued on to the new base which I can then do some desert groundwork on.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right update time! I have been working on this here and there but wanted to wait till I'd done enough for a decent update.

Started by getting the hand armour on the gun hand painted in the same white and grey as the rest of the armour

52344867712_0a94eb2458_c.jpgIMG_20220908_091407275 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

When thats dry I'll add pigments and chips like the rest, but I'm not going to attach it until the end, otherwise I think it will be too awkward to work on this guy.

So on to the exciting stuff, time to start the groundowrk on the base.

I've just bough a bit of routed round mdf which I primed and sprayed black

52346069593_e7324543ba_c.jpgIMG_20220908_091358454 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

In all honesty though the main purpose of at this stage is just to seal it, I'll probably have to touch up all the blacm edges as I'll be airbrushing and allsorts on this.

So step one is to mix up some groundwork.

I know theres lots of different methods for this, but my preferred technique is to mix textured medium and real dirt with white glue acrylic paint and pigment powder for a ground slurry.

Been a while since I've done it though I think, last time I used it was for my ABC warrior build a while back (though I made my own rocks in plaster in that one)

So here is all my ingredients

52346129859_e7a99cb14c_c.jpgIMG_20220908_192952083 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I have dirt, brown acrylic paint, texture gel, african earth pigment powder and also some small stones and slate chips which I'll press into it.

So got it all mixed together, then had to tweak it by adding more white glue and more dirt till I got a consistency I was happy with.

52346068468_06139aeb02_c.jpgIMG_20220908_194015416 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then once that was mixed I wanted to have an idea of where my slate chip rocks would go so just layed them out roughly to get an idea so I could work quickly.

52346129244_ca62bc71bd_c.jpgIMG_20220909_193006949 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I removed the legs from the old base and once I had given them some cling film shoes and used toothpicks to ensure nothing filled my holes for the feet wire, I scooped on the slurry.

52346128894_9b81416b9c_c.jpgIMG_20220909_193340214 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I used an old brush to spread it about and then pressed in my slate chippings

52346128349_ca24ef3343_c.jpgIMG_20220909_194011164 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Once that was done I got the legs pressed in to place so I could be sure none of the smaller rocks would interfere with his placing when I get them pressed in

52346249450_43d7c4cb61_c.jpgIMG_20220909_194349089 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The light started to get a bit crap as my solar light hadn't charged much in the day (helps if I remember to connect it to the panel!) so after the final step for now of sprinkling more dirt over I took some pics outside where it was a bit brighter.

52346249215_481f33e468_c.jpgIMG_20220909_194618052 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

52346249205_6894771bdf_c.jpgIMG_20220909_194746855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

This is very much step one, will paint the rocks and probably airbrush the ground a bit more and work it over with some pigment powders.

So next up, once its dry I'll get the legs back off and then carry on detailing it.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Sorry, but that base makes me think of a chocolate chip cookie 🍪.

That's funny because when my wife saw it after I got the ground mix on she said it looked like I had iced a cake!

I think I missed my calling and should have opened a bakery!

Base is dry now, so have carried on with the next steps.

Started by masking off the base, and then I really dont like the colour of the dirt, want it to be a bit more desertish so I cracked out the airbrush and gave it a blast of a very orangey brown.

52351078747_ec5d7ff434_c.jpgIMG_20220911_124335572 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

52352021196_1b4b33ac36_c.jpgIMG_20220911_130411210 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Used some model air paint from vallejo and I've had it a while so think it was a bit thick so it didn't spray well, so I mixed up another orangey brown with some tamiya and sprayed that over it and it was much better.

52352346289_ca7cd3870e_c.jpgIMG_20220911_131507371 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I sprayed over a darker reddish brown to break it up a bit and add shadow around the rocks and over the cracks

52352266903_c5db0899a9_c.jpgIMG_20220911_132801567 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Once that was done I mixed up some enamel colours to get a red brown for my rocks which I brushed on

52352266908_81209f6d26_c.jpgIMG_20220912_072402737 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I dry brushed the rocks and painted some of the smaller rocks differing shades to break up the colour

52355819235_a17a48c7ee_c.jpgIMG_20220913_161551583 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Now at this point I want to get the legs glued into place, because I really want to get them on and also because some of the details I'm adding run the risk of interferring with his legs or looking weird if I dont have them there as a reference.

Also, when I removed the legs the ground work wasn't quite dry so some bits from under around the feet were lifted meaning I have to add extra to fill gaps and to make sure he looks properley grounded.

So I got more of my dirt mix out of the sealed tub and to get a jump on the orangey colour I added a heap of light rust pigment powder before blobbing some in place ready for the feet.

52355393176_8e3f8ccaf7_c.jpgIMG_20220913_164035080 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So no going back now, hes glued in!

Next I'll continue detailing the base, going to add some dry long grass and probably some kind of largish flora that I've had an idea with.

Oh and also now the feet are in place I can use pigment poders to dust them up.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

It looks great. The soil looks like soil. I envy your skills, because in my performance, the soil usually looks like... hmmm... (using this word must be against the rules, so: it is also brown, it usually lies under the feet but it is not soil ;)

I would just add a bit of dust on feet.

 Thanks voozet! Yeah I've been working on him, just need to get around to doing a proper update, I've added a lot of pigments including to his feet and there's even grass! I'll post progress soon

Right time for that update!

I removed the masking tape from the base and used some black paint to touch up the edges here and there, and then it was time to crack out the pigments.

I used some mig graveyard dirt to add shadowing to the rocks and around his feet and then various rust shades to add more colour and variation to the dry dirt and I used africa dust to add a dusty finish to his feet.

52369810680_b562a134e4_c.jpgIMG_20220917_120519504 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I wanted to add a couple of small areas of grass just as an extra little detail. For grass I use a jute twine technique that I've used on a couple of my past dioramas including my first ever: -

Basically you get yourself a bit of garden twine (mine is dry grass so I'm sticking with the beige colour, if I wanted a green I leave it soaking over night in some cheap green acrylic paint diluted with water to dye it)

52369810535_f08a5bc001_c.jpgIMG_20220918_143709514 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

52369704074_0e1cecb890_c.jpgIMG_20220918_143756462 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The using a wire brush you brush down the length of it then grab some individual strands and keep brushing until you've got a lot built up on the brush, then you take it off and you have a tangle of the fibres ready to become a clump of grass.

52369809890_022024a746_c.jpgIMG_20220918_144415166 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

52369703314_a81ee109e4_c.jpgIMG_20220918_144519190 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I take the fibres off the brush and roll them up and then cut the bundle in half giving me two clumps of grass with very random height fibres which looks quite natural. Each bit gets dipped in white glue then pressed into place

Once its down I use a cocktail stick to sperate the bottom a bit so it doesn't look like a bad hairplug

52368450137_82396b0019_c.jpgIMG_20220918_150157801 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then once its dry I again use the cocktail stick just to help spread and shape it further.

52369701909_64070f5026_c.jpgIMG_20220919_120017941 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And THAT is where I'm leaving it, I'm happy with the base as is so the next update will be just to show him glued together and a link to the RF!I :)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
