Only just caught up with the past few weeks work on this and it is looking amazing.  I'm still hoping that at some point Trumpeter may branch out and do a D class cruiser as well.  Other than knowing that the Ds were 22 ft longer and had a different main armament arrangement, neither of which would be especially difficult to scratchbuild, they were also beamier which then starts getting a wee bit trickier.  I've still not really looked at the other differences despite it coming up in a discussion on here nearly a year ago.  I'd like to build DANAE as she was when she escorted HOOD on the Empire Cruise in 1923/24 as my wife's grandfather was on board at the time.

Hi Chewbacca, I'm not sure adapting this to a D is a goer considering the dimensional differences.  Be better off scratching the hull which of course would then cause The Universe to react and Trumpter to announce a "D"

The wood deck was lightly stained with diluted Neutral Grey wash and then the aft superstruture was stuck down.  Meaning that the Foc'sle deck could then be stuck down with the wood deck being stuck down.  A:)ll without fuss and drama - I do like these wood decks

I have to say, that hull dazzle is stunning.

I'd say it was dazzling! Seriously though, absolutely agree. She is coming along superbly Rob.

Just had a strange thought pop into my head so thought I'd try my luck here.

Yagi antennae etc. What colour were they?

Tom

Hi Tom - I wondered building Kent - from the photos indistinct that they were, they appeared to be painted the same colour as the surround and not black.

Weathering - with oils, with the aim to give a lived in look without being too "worn" as theses ships do seem to hve been painted with some frequency

2021 04 25_2668

2021 04 25_2672

The nice thing about oils is the lengthy drying time - it sits there weathered over 24 hrs and I come back, reflect, frequently change my mind, and "cut back" the weathering by scrubbing oil paint off with a cotton bud, until I'm satisfied.

2021 04 25_2669

It takes me about 3 hours to do the whole ship.

2021 04 25_2671

2021 04 25_2670

It starts to come alive.

I laid dome some "eyes" to begin a sea, but not entirely succesffuly - with too many having the dreaded dimples in the middle necessitating sanding back as they look awful!!

2021 04 25_2674

2021 04 25_2673

A much more successful technique is just to freely brush on the gloss medium (note to self!!!)

2021 04 25_2667

The base colour continued to bother me so I repainted with a darker blue to try to represent the Med

2021 04 25_2664

2021 04 25_2663

Those of you who've followed my last few builds will know I've shied away from cotton wool "white-water".  This one will have so I trialled out on my trial base.

2021 04 25_2665

Partly to see how it would take varnish.  it does without issue.

Otherwise, I spent the rest of the modelling day making some deck blast shields, and began to stick the funnel down - applying bob's buckles where needed.

Finally the superstructure scuttles were glazed

More soon

Thanks for looking

Cool. I dream of learning such unobtrusive weathering😉

I’m thinking is a case of knowing when to stop.

Thanks Fellas.  The important thing to remember about oils is that you have a lot of time to think and change your mind.  You can scrub it all off with white spirit within 12 hours if you decide you don't like it.

The funnels were finally glued down and then rigged with Infini 40 Dernier lycra.

2021 05 04_2690

The kit railings fitted nicely and fitting nicely has been the norm for this Trumpeter kit that I've come to like a lot.

2021 05 04_2692

2021 05 04_2691

Rigging as ever is made comparatively painless with Bob "Von" Buckle's wonderful ..............buckles

The Bridge superstructure was stuck down as a single piece and the HACs platform was tuck with PVA glue to ensure there was time to get it straight and level

2021 05 04_2688

2021 05 04_2687

The Shelter deck, supertructure is cluttered with Ammo lockers and Vents

2021 05 04_2686

2021 05 04_2685

The Railings are painted as is my custom to represent wire /Stanchions - this simple move alone blends in the comparatively thick kit railings.

The forward mast derricks were fitted and rigged

2021 05 04_2684

2021 05 04_2679

The final splinter shields were fitted and studying the 2 pictures these for fore and aft guns are distinctly lower than the superstructure ones

2021 05 04_2683

2021 05 04_2682

I know when I'm coming to the end of a build when it's time to paint the ship's boats...

2021 05 04_2680

A simple neutral grey wash brings out all of the Micromaster details

The aft (?mizzen) mast was stepped, one again the fit flatterd my modelling skills

2021 05 04_2681

And finally - these arrived from Northstar with a delivery time of 4 weeks - compared with 14weeks from last year!

Still the best figures, when will somebody produce some RN figures in steel helmets with lifejackets, duffle coats etc??

2021 05 05_2693

The end of this project is close - final details, rigging snd deck rails left to do..

Expect a Black Cat Models LCI (L) next; just released for my next project

Thanks for looking

I’d actually consider using figures if they did that, Bukit it’s have to be a small ship as they ain’t cheap

You're right Greg and the punchline is that when I opened them, they've sent me the wrong set and one I definitely didn't order which comprises 20 odd figures in the same pose standing to attention, the So called "Static figures"

I've emailed them and invited them to rectify but I have a suspicion that I'll be seeking a refund from PayPal.

Thanks to all of you for your likes

You could always have them lining the decks as she leaves port, for distant shores ?
