Phantom FG.1, 43 Squadron QRA, RAF Leuchars, 1970s.

Hello all,

 

Here is my recently completed 1/48 Hasegawa Phantom FG.1, marked as XV571 of 43 Squadron based at RAF Leuchars in the 1970s. Built for the Interceptors GB, the build thread is here

 

Extras used included Quickboost resin seats, Eduard etch, New Ware mask, Mastercasters FOD inserts, Top Notch camouflage mask and Xtradecals. The AIM-7 and AIM-9 are from a Tamiya F-14 kit.

 

Paints are mostly from Mr Paint - Dark Gull Grey for the cockpit, Light Aircraft Grey for the undersides along with Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey for the upper surface colours. Weathering is a mixture of Flory wash, Abteilung oils, dry brushing and some Tamiya sets. I wanted fairly grubby look on the lower fuselage as seen in a few reference pictures I have.

Absolutely lovely! My favourite UK F4 colour scheme. A nice contrast with the grey and the F3 too.

43 Sqn. Phantoms , superb and definitely the classiest of the lot and perhaps only bettered with the original rounded fin and in the initial gloss finish with red/white/blue national markings.

Brilliant job there Cpl, I used to be on 43 Sqn and covered QRA many times. I've worked on "A" (XV571) and I think you've really captured the aircraft well given what I remember.

That's excellent and I think it was this particular aircraft that launched a Sidewinder at St Andrews while sitting on Q in the late 1970's. (they started pointing them in a different direction after that incident).

There was a great photo in the local paper of the 'winder sticking out of the mud in the river Eden just outside Guardbridge if I remember correctly.
