Chris thanks Chris the pre-shading was an experiment that didn't quite work, probably the wrong colour for the pre-shade as it looked a bit like dark copper, I think the pre-shade worked better on the control surfaces when I used "jet exhaust"? rgds John(shortCummins) 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cheers, Roger thanks Roger its very difficult to show the differences from a photograph, my lack of skill in that department, however I'm very impressed with the Xtreme metal paints, you use them straight from the pot so there's no guesswork for mixing ratios. shortCummins Posted February 16, 2021 Author Share Posted February 16, 2021 I want to try to give the impression of heavily used Argos engines, my idea being that this is a ‘test bed’ aircraft and the engines would have been run quite heavily to test stresses on the fixings etc. AK479 aluminium was used as a ‘rough base’ for the Argos engines. Working from the rear of the engines various colours were used to try and create a repeatedly heated and cooled metal effect. I’d previously painted the insides of the stovepipes vallejo 77.723 exhaust manifold, this colour was continued the outside ends of these and also ‘bands’ of this colour were added along from the back for approx. 2/3rds of the way. Additional bands/stripes of Xtreme metal AK486 jet exhaust were also added. A marble coat of vallejo 77.711 magnesium was applied for some tonal variation. AK485 pale burnt metal was also used as a marble coat. The ‘front’ of the engines were given an additional marble coat using AK479 aluminium. AK478 white aluminium was added randomly to create the look of oxidation. The ‘straps’ were dry brushed with Tamiya X-10 gun metal. Finally some heat stains were applied using heavily thinned, 95% self levelling thinner 5% paint, Tamiya X-27 red and X-23 blue. I bought some Alclad paints a few years ago but never really got on with them ( my F 104C was an absolute disaster ) so now I just brush them on exhausts/jet pipes, my favourites being Exhaust, pale burnt metal and burnt iron. Should add a bit of visual interest? Anywho the intakes were given a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer… …and then a base coat of MRP-360 red rust. I know that these would have been made from aluminium and wouldn’t go rusty however I wanted to use this as a ‘undercoat’ for the chipping I planned to do on these parts. So I sprayed some hairspray, let it dry and then applied a coat of MRP-042 red. After an hour or so I ‘chipped’ the top coat to reveal the different colour. Unfortunately the two reds are very alike, you can see the chipping but you really have to look for it, perhaps it would have been better to use a different colour, maybe yellow? Because I felt that there wasn’t enough of a contrast between the two reds I decided to add some sponge flat aluminium chipping. Another thing that doesn’t show it very well is this, the aluminium overpowers the black, the front louver bars have been painted black, honest guvnor. Tamiya black panel liner was then used in the louvers. I'm also a fan of Xtreme metal paints, much more user friendly than Alclad IMHO I just use the Alclad like a wash and haven't considered trying to brush the Xtreme ones. The only things that are missing from the kit are seat harness's, how many kits have decent harness's included?, lack of decals for the instrument panel, once the fuselage is assembled you can't see the IP so... The instructions look good, they remind me of the Wingnut Wings instructions, however some of the "placement" is a little too vague, nothing you can't work out. Overall its a very nice kit of an unusual aircraft and at a really attractive price, even if you cost in the aftermarket seat harness and wooden decals, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy it again and build one of the other two versions on the aircraft. 1 hour ago, SafetyDad said: Lovely work. shortCummins Posted February 18, 2021 Author Share Posted February 18, 2021 Wood decals, the Uschi van de Rosten set contains a mixture of purpose made, for the wings, and generic woodgrain decals. For the horizontal and vertical stabilisers you’ll need to “make your own” decals from the generic wood patterns supplied. On their website Uschi suggest making a template using masking tape and then transferring the shape to the decal sheet. I’ve decided to start with the easiest part to decal, one the rear stabilisers… This will be broken down into 3 separate decals on each side… 1 - leading edge, will wrap around to reverse side? 2 - main surface, will require access port cutting out from the decal 3 - vertical stabiliser connection, the easiest decal to make? The first decal I attempted was part 2, to make the template some de-tacked Tamiya tape was placed on the piece and the ‘shape’ traced with am HB pencil. This shape was placed on the generic decal sheet. After about 10-20 minutes I added some Micro Set to help the decal conform. This was repeated for the other side. For part 3, to add some interest I used the same generic decal type rotated at 90º to give the impression of a separate piece of plywood. shortCummins Posted February 19, 2021 Author Share Posted February 19, 2021 If I were to use these wood decals again there’s a couple of things I’d do differently. Firstly I’d use different colours for different panels “base” colours, I’ve used MRP-259 pale wood as the sole base colour, using lighter and darker colours will add to the “different” types of wood used. Also I’d pre-shade the edges of each panel, once again the idea is to show different panels and types of wood. I’ll add post-shading to mine after I’ve protected them with a coat of varnish. I’d read that the Uschi decals were thin, and I can confirm they are, this makes them slightly tricky to use, they want to fold in on themselves, but careful handling and a good smooth “base” helps. On studding the horizontal stabilisers I’ve convinced myself that they would largely be made from metal rather than wood, so I’ve painted the leading edge aluminium and left the centre panels as wood, I think this makes more sense? So the same steps, as horizontal stabilisers, were followed for the wood panels and here are the results… The wings have preprinted panels with different wood types and shaded edges I thing the overall effect is very good.
