Martian Posted February 9, 2021 Author Share Posted February 9, 2021 Having cut the starboard cowlings away from the model, I decided it was time to add some of the more prominent details to the engine that are missing from the kit parts. No big deal as I rather enjoy building models engines. The most significant omission form the kit is the lack of any ignition system. On the Simoun, there is a magneto for both the port and starboard sides of the engine. I have drilled out the ends of the magnetos to accept ignition wires and these have been fed into a tube from which the ignition leads themselves exit. The leads then feed into the cylinders where the spark plugs are on the actual engine. The kit supplies a large pipe that runs from the carburettor to the exhaust manifold. All well and good except that the pipe is way too short, so a replacement had to be fashioned from plastic rod. The other strange omission from the kit is that only five of the six exhaust manifolds on the kit actually connect to the exhaust system, or anything else for that matter. Out with the plastic rod again and fashion a pipe to fill the gap. I have busied up the engine with some scraps of .10 'thou plastic strip and have still to add a connecting mechanism between the two carburettors and connections for the oil system. I may or may not do the port ignition system as I am not sure that it will be seen through the opened up louvres on that side. Seriously nice work Cheers Astounded of Australia The answer is quite simple as it happens. Many modellers use magnifiers but a few years ago now I hit on a cunning plan. I went to my opticians and asked her if it was possible to have some magnifying spectacles made up to the prescription of my eyes. she said that it was and after some experimentation we settled on a pair of x 5 for general work and x 13 for the very finest detailing. The plan being that if I can make something look good under these magnifications, then it will look even better to the naked eye. The glasses take a bit of getting used to but very soon I found that I could wear the x 5 pair for hours on end. The x 13 can be used for about an hour, although I am sure that with more use, they can be worn for a lot longer. Expensive? Not really, I paid well under £100 for the x 5 pair with the x 13 pair, being a rather specialist job coming in at just over £100. I was about to get stuck into detailing the carburettors when the thought struck me that it might be a good plan to check how much room the engine bearers left me to work with. Upon going to the relevant sprue, I discovered that not only did the parts look somewhat too thin but one was broken in two places. Bugger! say I. I decided that rather than faff about trying to repair a part that did not look like it was up to the job of supporting the kit's engine, only to probably have it break on me again further on down the line, I would be better served by scratch building a replacement part. This meant that I would have to do the opposite side of the engine as well. The matter decided, it was out plastic rod time and after about an hour's cursing with untranslatable Martian swear words, we had a new set of engine bearers. I also hollowed out the depression in the lower engine cowling in order to give a see through look when it finally glued in place and to allow me to attach exhaust stubs directly to the engine. That’s a very good idea on the magnifiers, I have several pairs but just can’t stand to use them, maybe a prescription pair would fit the build. (now having dialogue from Young Frankenstein in my mind...) I got a magnifying glasses kit from a modelling buddy, which has frames with LED lights, and a series of lenses up to (I think) x5. I've only tried them once, with good results, but after trying the x5 I wondered what the point of all the lesser magnifications was! Martian Posted February 16, 2021 Author Share Posted February 16, 2021 I decided to work on the kit seats today. The kit parts exhibit good detail but need a lot of very careful cleaning up. I say careful because the kit plastic is on the soft side and easily broken. The kit provides legs for the seating but to be honest the effort of trying to clean them up, without breaking them, is not really worth the candle. I drilled the marked holes on the kit floor right through the same to provide a better gluing area and deepened the locating holes on the bottom of the seats. I then got my Albion Alloys' cutter out and made ten new legs from .25 'thou plastic rod. The seats are only pushed into place at the moment as I want to paint them separately. Thanks for looking.
