In our area, the GP surgeries are told how many doses they are getting at a particular time and then fill the slots according to the groups who are eligible for vaccination, so currently it's the over 70's and anyone in the groups above them. If you received a letter telling to you shield then you should be receiving the call fairly so As I mentioned earlier supply of the vaccine is the limiting factor for any vaccination programme, for Covid it is more complicated owing to the differing requirements for storage. For example the Astra Zeneca vaccine can be treated like the flu vaccine, fridge storage at between 2 and 8 degrees C although unlike flu vaccine it has to be drawn up rather than coming in single dose ready for use syringes. The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at minus 70 degrees C, requires reconstitution before use and has to be given quite quickly after that. Thus it cannot easily be given in care homes or on home visits and our surgery has to use a health centre that has been provided with the appropriate storage, as do the I other ones in the area Mrs T is waiting to learn about about what the other vaccines will require as and when they appear. I am 67 in just over a weeks time with an underlying, but non shielding heath condition and Mrs T reckons mine turn will be mid-late February all being well. Whofan Posted January 30, 2021 Share Posted January 30, 2021 (edited) Text off the GP last Saturday, booked for Tuesday just, took longer to go around the one way system in the GP’s than answering the questions and have the vaccination (AZ). No obvious side effects, no fatigue, just the usual achy injection site. SWIMBO is a couple of years shy of group 4 so she’s got to wait a few weeks yet. My daughter - a dental nurse has had it, brother-in-law and his wife had theirs, we’re all waiting for the second dose. Son in law should be getting one soon, he's in the army. Younger brother's 69, he won't be long, youngest brother's 62, a bit of a wait for him. ** Should have said this is the NHS at its best - well done everyone involved! Had an appointment with our practice nurse a fortnight ago around half-way through her shift and I was the first patient she had seen that day who believed Covid was a real threat. czechnavy Posted February 1, 2021 Share Posted February 1, 2021 Had our jabs yesterday (Sunday) morning at 0915 - administer by an ex-pupil who lives just around the corner from us - then it was home for bacon baps!! Last time I met an ex-pupil in a medical situation I was on the receiving end(!!) of a colonoscopy - again a delightful young lady but who seemed more interested in catching up with news of other old members of staff than the task in hand!! That is a fairly normal reaction to having alien (as in not your own bodies, not in the sense of being injected with extra- terrestrial nano machines that will turn you into a Dalek or Cyberman) stuff being injected into arm. It is a sign that the body's defences are working as they should in reacting to 'hostile' organic material. Even though most vaccines are based on dead viruses, they can still elicit an immune response. This is a gross simplification of some very complex and clever systems, most of which I have forgotten. Mrs T tells me they will be starting on Group 5 (my group) before too long around here. All the care homes and staff have been along with most of the health care workers and others in Groups 1to 4 in our immediate area. She has just signed up to do another session on Saturday. Happens the nurse worked with my eldests daughter Karen as a community nurse. Amazing & weired. Went to my birthday dinner with wife to Karen's (above) place. Very nice time. Being vintage she drove us there & back. Very nice. Until 36 hours later Karen rang her & husband had Covid19. My wife & I are both 82 not a happy thought wife has a couple of issues. I have plenty of issues but being dopey does not count with Covid. Thought wwe have got to get the wretched thing. But no had all the tests. Karen had head aches & loss of taste. Plus 2 weeks not breathing as well as usual. Phil husband is asmatic sailed throught it with out any symptoms. Two sons living same house. They did not get it either. Weird. They went from twiddling their thumbs to flat out on this last surge. I last had flu in the Asian epidemic back in the fifties, and kill colds stone dead in 48 hours. I put much of it down to virtual constant tonsillitis from my teens until I managed to stongarm the specialist into removing them at 38. Never as much as a sore throat since. I'm hoping my defenses will keep this critter at bay. I've not knowingly been directly exposed, though I have been in contact with others who have had it and recovered without much in the of symptoms.
