Chris thanks Chris I unashamedly stole the idea from Deanflyer, he should get all the credit! One thing I find difficult to understand is the lack of 1/48 aircrew either as aftermarket or decent figures as part of the kit, I guess manufactures don't think we want them? I suppose we often invest so much time, and money, in aftermarket and detailing cockpits that having a pilot would either detract from or stop us adding the extra detail? rgds John(shortCummins) 1
shortCummins
So João and Paulo were first given a coat of my favourite primer UMP/Stynylrez black and then the “seats” were dry-brushed with Tamiya XF-24. Their flight-suits were given a base colour of Tamiya XF-62 olive drab. Various patches and their gloves were picked out with Tamiya XF-49 khaki. I mixed a little of the XF-49 with XF-62 and used this to dry-brush the arms and legs to accentuate the folds of the fabric. Both helmets were painted XF-2 white as a base, for some reason I can’t brush paint XF-2. So once the white had dried they were given a coat of XF-19 sky grey. Their visors were given a coat of Tamiya X-19 smoke. Next I’ll be putting the cockpit together and joining the fuselage halves… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
Hello Chaps has anyone built this kit before? I'm after finding out how much nose weight is needed, I had a look on the interweb and so far I've seen anything from 22 to 67 grams, 67 sounds like overkill to me so if you know how much is needed I'd be grateful to find out. thanks in advance John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
Time to add all of the bits and pieces into the cockpit tub. First off I squeezed the rear resin pilot figure into the tub, followed by the control stick and IP. Next the rear instrument combing so that I could ensure the front pilot and seat could be placed in the correct place. When the rear of the tub had been completed the front area was tackled. Once again the resin pilot and seat was fixed/squeezed into the tub, followed by the control stick, IP and lastly the instrument combing. Here’s the cockpit sub-assembly… I think the resin pilots really add “something” to the overall look of the cockpit. If any resin figure sculptors are out there wondering what to do next I’m sure you’d find a market for 1/48 pilot figures, especially WWII crew? The cockpit was then fixed to the fuselage side along with the front wheel well. Time to add some nose weight, HobbyBoss don’t give you any idea of how much nose weight is needed!? So after searching the interweb it would appear that I needed somewhere between 22 - 67 grams. I’ll be using “fishing lead shot” for the weight, as this is quite small I created a “dam” under the front of the cockpit tub with the mould pour block from one of the resin seats, remarkably good fit. So for the weight I’m using approx 40 grams, more or less halfway(ish) between the two extremes. I fixed the lead shot with some PVA wood glue. Next I’ll be cleaning up the seams and adding the wings… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
bigbadbadge
Might be worth leaving the front end off until wings and tailplanes on to see if it is enough weight to make it stand on it all three wheels? Chris

Chris thanks Chris I think you're right, I want to spray the lead shot black anyway as you might be able to see in the air scoops so it won't hurt to wait before nailing on the front. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
Before tackling the fuselage seams, in truth there wasn’t much to do as the fit was very good, I fitted the gun sight… You need to be careful when placing the gunsight as there is very little clearance between the top of the gunsight and underside of the windscreen. …and then fitted the masked canopy. Something to note on the canopy is that the centre line doesn’t need to be removed. it’s difficult to photograph but hopefully you make out the line, circled in red. However, the one on the windscreen needs to be removed. Ordinarily I would use Micro Kristal Klear to attach “glass” pieces however when I opened the bottle it was very lumpy, if not solid!, so I got to try a “new”, new to me a least, glue Mig Ultra, I’m reasonably sure both Kristal Klear & Ultra are PVA glue? Next I’ll be bolting on the wings… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
Pappy
G'day John, I think you may have attached your HUD ( 'gunsight') back to front. Check out the picture in your last post. The combiner glass should slope down towards to nose, yours look like they are going the other way, cheers, Pappy Edited March 5, 2021 by Pappy
Biggles87
Oops! It happens to us all at some time, we’ll me anyway. Apart from that the cockpit area looks pretty good to me. John
Pappy
G'day John, is it too late to fix? If you used a PVA type of glue on the clear parts you should be able to remove the clear parts without damaging them? Pappy

Pappy thanks Pappy unfortunately I changed my mine about using the Ultra glue, mainly down to my laziness as it was in a different room when I attached the canopy and as I'd decided that I was going for a closed lid I used TET! so I'll have to live with it, RTFM Cummins RTFM (Read The Flaming Manual) rgds John(shortCummins)

shortCummins
So before I bolt the wings to the fuselage, I cleaned the seams and before I could use some primer to check my work I needed to spray the canopy framing with the interior colour of H305. The fit of the canopy isn’t the best, so I’ve used some paper as a mask, once I’ve finished painting I’ll have a look to see if I can live with the slight gap? Pappy pointed out that I’ve fitted the gunsight the round way round, this could be the cause for the misalignment of the canopy, so its “operator error” rather than a fundamental issue with the kit. UMP/Stynylrez black primer was used to check the seams. At the same time as checking the seams I sprayed the lead weights with primer, this was probably not necessary however the weights were dark grey and painting them black should ensure they disappear even if they might be visible though the vents behind the propellor. The rear horizontal stabilisers and various strakes were attached… …and then the upper and lower front wings joined and then attached to the airframe. There’s a gap along the bottom of the wing and fuselage that’ll need some attention. I’ve deliberately left off both the machine guns, pitot and navigation lights from the wings, these will be added towards the end of the build. I’ll also fit the antenna and canopy handles last thing. HobbyBoss would have you attach the propellor to the lower cowl assembly… …however, this would make painting problematic so I’ll be fixing the lower cowl and leaving the propellor off, the main issue will be that the propellor won’t spin on the finished model. Some good news, the nose weight is doing its job! hoorah! Next I’ll be sorting out the wing roots and then start on the paint job… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Colin Thanks Colin having crew in the cockpit really adds something I think, its a shame that more kit manufactures don't add decent figures and there's not too many after-market ones available, I'm guessing that we modellers don't want them? 19 hours ago, ZHOU Kun said: Lovely build so far! Regards, Kun thanks Kun I'll be trying to emulate some of your weathering effects later in the build, I ended up with approx 30 grams for the nose weight, balancing her on the wings there is a definite tip to the front of the aircraft so I think the weight is about right. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
The gap between the lower wing and fuselage was filled with Mr White putty, for the life of me I can’t remember were I put my Perfect Putty, it’s not where I think I put it. There was also a step between the windscreen and fuselage that needed to be puttied and sanded. The whole airframe was given a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer. Next I’ll be painting and masking the black for the leading edges and wing walkways… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
I could have just make the black primer and then painted the grey and green camo’ however I wanted to add a little bit of tonal variation by using a couple of different blacks or dark greys. The three colours I’m going to use are all Tamiya paints, XF-63 German grey, XF-69 NATO black and XF-85 rubber black, difficult to photograph but here goes. I used the XF-85 as a base for the walkways. XF-69 was then added in a marble/mottle patten to both the walkways and leading edges. Finally a heavily thinned XF-63 was added. Once the paint had dried I masked the leading edges and walkways in preparation for the camo’. Next I’ll be painting the grey camo’… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
heloman1
Hi John, plenty of figure in 1/35th nothing for us 48th builders! It's a pity!!! Colin
shortCummins
So the camo’ scheme I’ve chosen is the grey and green Brazilian version. Hobby Boss recommend Hobby Color H306 gray so I first made a base marble layer using this colour. The marble layer was added to with Hobby Color H305 gray, Tamiya XF-64 red brown and XF-63 German grey. H306 was thinned 80% thinner 20% paint and used as a blend coat. Next I’ll be painting the green camo’… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
The grey was masked with Tamiya tape to give a hard edge camo’. After de-tacking the tape it was put onto the airframe and the camo’ shape drawn with a pen… …the shape was then cut with a sharp blade and then relocated… This was repeated until the grey was fully masked. If you plane to build this aircraft and paint this scheme I would recommend not fitting both C2 parts… …as this would make masking around the tail section much easier. For the green Hobby Boss recommends Hobby Color H302 so this was used for the base marble layer. Additional marbling was created using Hobby color H70 and Tamiya XF-13 JA green. A blend coat of thinned H302 was sprayed in light coats until I achieved the effect I wanted. Next I’ll be removing the masking tape and checking for any areas that need “fixing” and deciding if any post shading is required. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
Pete in Lincs
John, I just did a mega catch up. Very impressive work as always. Compare this with @Navy Bird 's recent Short Tucano build and the changes are obvious. (Notwithstanding that this is the Super version).

I know that there was a resin Short version, I can't find one at the moment, but if someone did a conversion kit I'd be very interested in building this again in "British" livery rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
So I removed the camo’ masks and I’m really pleased with the way both the grey and green have come out. However, the black leading edge on the fin needed some work. I’m really not happy with how the masks worked, so I first resprayed it grey… …and then I masked the grey to repaint the black leading edge and protect from overspray. The leading edge was then re-sprayed. Next I’ll be making a start on the decals, stickers or transfers (depending on your age 😉 ). until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
