shortCummins Posted January 28, 2021 Share Posted January 28, 2021 After completing my Tamiya Spitfire Mk.V tropical and with a view to continue getting me “back up to speed” on the modelling front I’ve delved into the stash and decided on this… HobbyBoss 1:48 Brazilian EMB-314 Super Tucano Having watched a YouTube video by Becker’s Models on his build… https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMJsGOZ3fTI I decided to get the resin pilots he used, I don’t think I’ll be doing her “wheels up” but I liked stuffing a pilot in the Spitfire and as HobbyBoss don’t supply any I’ve order these KASL Hobby figures… For some reason they don’t appear to be available here in the UK? so I’ve ordered them from an Australian outfit BNAModelWorld.com (where I stole the product photos). As these are coming from the other side of the world they may holdup the build but hopefully not for too long. Eduard also have a PE set for the “outside” of the aircraft. This PE set is very nearly the same price as the full kit, and in truth I’m “humming and haring” but their product photos do look good. Eduard used to do a cockpit PE set, no longer available, having looked at it I’m not sure I’d have got that set as the resin pilots would hide most of the detail. The kit has 3 marking options Força Aérea Brasileira (Brazilian Air Force) Fuerza Aérea de Chile (Chilean Air Force) Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (Colombian Air Force) I’ll be opting for the Brazilian version until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 8 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I’ve ordered a couple of resin pilots & seats which are winging their way from down-under so I’ll be adding them as and when they turn up. So to start I identified the parts I’ll be using and prepared them for some UMP/Stynylrez black primer. I also assembled the front wheel well. Some photo etch is supplied with the kit, I’ll not be using the PE seat belts (unless the pilots don’t turn up) however here is the PE gun sight. These were then given a blast of UMP/Stynylrez black primer. I'm particularly interested to see how well the etched set will "fit" on the exterior of the model, because it seems to be a bit on the thick-side of things. All those panels should be flush with the skin, so the plastic would need cutting out. Too much fuss for me. Don't forget the nose weight! And the usual HB trick of fudging details. Suspect everything! I'm already wondering what the purpose is of that large access panel on the RH side above the aft wing root. Compared with the Shorts Tucano, it would allow access to the rear of the hydraulic pack. Something that would have been welcome back then! We had to change a Hyd reservoir once. It took forever due to lack of access. And, IIRC, there was a 32mm nut holding it in place. I recently purchased the KH Huey and then the Big Ed set. The bottom dropped out again! Of our SA Rand so the Ed set cost me 50% more than the kit. I'm sure I'll not be using all of it!!! Chris Hi Chris I "normally" build 1:48 aircraft, mainly Eduard or Tamiya kits but I have a couple of Revell & Airfix in the stash, I know that Eduard often re-box other manufactures but finding "reasonable" kits is always a joy, especially if they're from someone I've not built before. Its what this forum is really good about seeing others builds and thinking, that's a nice kit I wonder if I could build it to that standard? inspiration and challenges at the same time. One of the Revell kits is a re-boxed Hasegawa Phantom FGR.2, £70 for the Hasegawa £30 for the Revell kit, go figure!? I'm lucky enough to have some 1:32 kits, the Tamiya Spitfire that I'm building my way back to, a couple of Wingnut Wings kits, shame they went bust, and the Meng Dr.1 Triplane which is the Wingnut kit but with poorer instructions. I've just ordered the Das Werk Ju EF-126/EF-127, just because its looks an "interesting" aircraft and the kit was very reasonably priced at under £40. There's one kit that I will build this year, it's my favourite aircraft, the Lukgraph DH-89 Dragon Rapide, it's also the most money I've spent on a kit (£120) but it was the first aircraft I went on, 1960's pleasure flight along the Cornwall coastline, there's something about the Rapide that captures the elegance of a bygone age. rgds John(shortCummins) 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ha Ha Pete it is a bit modern isn't it, I nearly got a nose bleed! for some reason she makes me think of what the Mustang would be if she was designed 40 or 50 years later. "normally" I wouldn't mind a bit of faffing with the PE, but I'm really just trying to get back up to speed so that I can tackle my 1:32 Spitfire and get back to the Stuka kit-bash, I've had one or two or twenty ideas on how to move that build forward so hopefully they'll be back on the bench in the not too distant future. Colin thanks Colin I'm a big fan of adding extra detail, either scratch building or PE, but it's getting increasingly difficult to justify spending the extra. Having said that I've got a project for a 1:48 Eduard Spitfire and I've purchased the Brasin cockpit and engine, I also need(?) the radio compartment, so far I've spent more on this 1:48 version that the Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire cost me! rgds John(shortCummins) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
shortCummins Posted January 30, 2021 Author Share Posted January 30, 2021 Well my “first cock-up” (I’m sure it won’t be the only one) for this build was that I’d used UMP/Stynylrez GLOSS black primer when I’d meant to use the “normal” stuff. I’m not sure that it’d make too much difference in the long run however, I didn’t want to take any chances so I gave the relevant bits a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer, this time I checked the bottle twice to make sure it was the correct one! HobbyBoss suggests the main colour for the cockpit and instrument panel should be dark gull grey however, I found this on the interweb… To my eyes the IP looks to be more of a blueish grey so I’ve used H306 gray FS36270 For the gull grey I used H305 gray FS36118 Wheel wells should be aircraft grey, I’ve used XF-19 sky grey as it’s the nearest colour I’ve got and by the time a panel line wash and weathering it’ll be close enough. I ended up drilling out the nose and spinner to put lead sinkers in right at the end. I had to glue the spinner in place after this. It really needs a lot and there isn't much space in front of the cockpit. shortCummins Posted January 31, 2021 Author Share Posted January 31, 2021 Panels were picked out with various greys Tamiya XF-20 medium, XF-63 German, XF-82 ocean and a couple of panels in XF-1 black. the floor was scuffed-up a bit and buttons, knobs and/or switches were highlighted by dry-brushing with XF-16 flat aluminium. Various buttons were then painted black, red, yellow or red brown. To tone-back the silver, the edges were dry-brushed with XF-66 light grey I think this might be a little too colourful however once the pilots are crammed in I’m not sure how much of it will be seen. John thanks John I've had a problem with finding suitable cockpit photos as there's different versions of the aircraft, obviously the Brazilian "original" but also a couple built under licence in the 'States and here in the UK (Northern Ireland I believe). Each version appears to have different instrument layouts and I'm guessing they'd be different depending on what role the aircraft would be used for, a trainer might be different to a ground support role? To help them settle I first used Micro Set and then after around 20 minutes or so I applied some Solvaset to really hammer the decals down. However, the “smaller” switches were painted rather than use the decals as the buttons were quite raised and the decals would have struggled to fully/correctly conform and I thought it would be easier to paint. Both instrument panel coaming were dry-brushed with XF-63 German grey …and then the gun-sight base was very lightly dry-brushed with XF-16 flat aluminium to pick out the fasteners and edges. I’ll attache the gun-sight once the cockpit subassembly and IP coaming(s) have been fitted to the fuselage. The cockpit tub, joysticks and coamings were given a coat of aqua matt. shortCummins Posted March 1, 2021 Author Share Posted March 1, 2021 João and Paulo, the two pilots, arrived from down-under, very efficient they arrived a couple of weeks after I ordered them, I was expecting a month or two! Unfortunately João and Paulo needed some surgery to get them to fit and seat down properly. The pilot who sits in the rear seat needed a smaller shoe size and both seats needed “thinning” so that they could slide down into the tub. Having enjoyed Deanflyer’s Bruntingthorpe Buccaneer build… I had to have the chap in the rear waving, such a good idea I thought I’d steal it!
