1/72 UM Soviet SU-100

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow Britmodellers,

here's my 1/72 UM SU-100 with Armory resin wheels, MB metal barrel, Karaya towing cable, and Albion Alloys antenna added.

The model was painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics (H80) and weathered with artist oils.

All photographs by Wolfgang Rabel.

I bought this kit a few years ago at an Eastern European model show (remember the good old days?) for a bargain price. It's a typical short-run kit, with heavy sprue gates and some flesh around parts, so it needs a little TLC before assembly.

The kit wheels come in two parts each - a plastic wheel rim and a rubber tyre.

Sounds like a good idea, but creates some problems for the modeller, because the rubber rings are difficult to clean up and may get brittle over time.

I used resin wheels from Armory (intended for a T-34, but also suitable for the SU-100) as replacements.

I wasn't very happy with this product as a few of the wheels had their mating plugs positioned off-center, requiring some extra work.

The kit offers a towing cable, but this is also made of rubber, so I discarded the kit part and used a metal cable with resin hooks from Karaya.

Markings represent a vehicle operating in the Berlin area, April 1945.
