34 Squadron Vickers Viscount 839

Recommended Posts

I will be joining in with the much maligned Mach 2 Vickers Viscount.

I will be converting the kit's -700 airframe to a -800 by way of the Hamilton Hobbies conversion set.

It will be marked as one of two aircraft operated in the VIP role by 34 Squadron at RAAF Fairbairn during the 60s, decal from Hawkeye models Australia

Dennis, are we modellers or assemblers! :D

It's a joke I've used before but I like recycling.

We are Devo!

Good luck

Good luck Ray - you're going to need it! I've contemplated the AIM Viscount 800 conversion a few times but every time I think of it the thought of having to use the Mach 2 Viscount kills the idea. That upside-down wing section is one of those things I just can't unsee - if it wasn't for that I might bite the bullet and go for it.

I haven't seen the Hamilton Hobbies conversion before. Does it include the bulged nacelles for the 800?

Thanks for the confidence building comments chaps!

Juliann the HH set just has the plug, slipper thanks (which are undersized according to an SME mate of mine) and cabin window plugs. Looking at the kit the (a quick glance at the engine parts) shows it has bulged nacelles but I will confirm it later.

And I am into it now, started plugging window opening as I am using decals for the cabin windows, the fuselage plug was also cut down the centre and glued in

one side down

the other down and some putty applied, test fit of both halves together and some tweaking will be required

Here we go, some decent progress,

Cockpit installed and painted

I have it on good authority the seats were close to this colour! Not you will see much when he 'transparency' goes on

Wings and nacelles

50984773256_3113bc9b32_b.jpg

Also added prop shafts as the kit has a small stub on the back of the hub

Fuselage halves together with some help

Putty on and first round of sanding done, filling the recessed door details as they are wrong for the 800, I will be using decals to replace them with correct shaped doors.

and second round of putty going on

Overall fit is good after parts clean up, not sure what all the fuss about Mach2 kits is about :D

A little more filling and sanding to do and then the gear will be going together, I have also sanded and polished the notoriously poor windscreen part. It is look good after being dipped in future.

The other Ray!

That moniker was taken years ago by “TOR” on AMI and ACAM but seeing your “other” is lower case “ToR” might be available?

That is coming along really well, I like that extension plug and window stoppers.

All the best,

The other Ray!

Thanks Ray

Speaking of ACAM, have you read my PM over there about your idea about Graeme?

You mean THE Ray S!

Yes Ray saw it but may have got a bit ahead of myself and just waiting for a clarification before replying.

(Also the GB “elimination” on ACAM has probably killed off another idea I had. )

Another alternative could be YAR - “Yet Another Ray”!

Well back to the model, the windscreen has been installed and faired in, some milkiness at the bottom is future I think, hopefully it will be painted over after masking up the windscreen panels or goes away when the future dries properly.

The gear leys went on next, you can see a fuselage repair next to the nose wheel well where the fuselage was short shot, an easy fix with card and putty

The wheels were next, some pour stubs to clean up I think

and assembled

Final shot on its wheels, I think the nose gear leg is a tad long, the model has a rear down pose but should sit level.

Crikey you have done well with this, I keep getting mine out of the stash to have a look and it goes back in there  the surface on mine is awful, but I will do it, I just don't know when  your model now looks great on its undercarriage,  great work.
