Revell 1/72 Tornado GR.1 - Converted to GR.4 617 Squadron RAF Lossiemouth

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

This was a holdover from 2020 as I was awaiting Euro Decals GR.4 Stencils to arrive as the kit ones were Bi-lingual in places.

The conversion kit came from Freightdog,

The Decals were Xtradecal X72216 RAF 2014 Update (I've got a Tucano with these in mind too)

Primed in UMP Primer.

Painted with Mr. Hobby Gloss Black, Colourcoats Medium Sea Grey and Light Aircraft Grey, Tamiya Nato Black, Neutral Grey, Matt White, Rubber Black, Clear Green and Clear Red.

Vallejo Silver and Aluminium, Xtreme Metals Aluminium, Steel, Burnt Metal and Jet Exhaust.

Clear coated with Windsor and Newton Matt and Gloss.

The Fin caused me a few issues when it came to the final coat. I hit it with two lightly misted coats of Mr. Color Super Clear then a wet coat and it was like I'd put a crackle glaze on.

I admit to user error here as the wet coat must have been too wet.

I micro-meshed it back very lightly when fully dry and then coated with Windsor and Newton.

Just about got away with it. Looks OK from 3 feet.

Of course I only noticed that I hadn't filled the port cannon port up after I had placed the Squadron decals.

Fixing that called for some very ginger filling, sanding, masking and painting.

There is a slight dent still visible but again good from 3 feet.

I then found that I'd fitted the outer pylons the wrong way round, which were then fixed but they don't fit quite horizontally.

Anyway, enough waffle,

Thanks for looking and as always comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

You've overcome these issues masterfully, and I love the scheme honouring 617s famous past.

Nice work.

Q

Thanks very much.

The issues were all of my own making.

I don't think I'm capable of doing something simply.

Cheers,

Alistair
