SS Nomadic, Titanic's Little Sister - 1/200 - 3D (Assembly)

Recommended Posts

😂👍

I found a base that I like, thicker than usual, but it enhances the scene. The color is perfect. The background is not part of it of course, it's just for the pictures.

I continued the aging, it's not finished, it has to match the other block once I varnish this part, it tends to lighten a bit, so you have to take that into account.

I made the yard's gangway, I have two more colors to apply, then a little aging.

I inserted the medal from the "Cité de la Mer de Cherbourg" that I found by chance on Ebay, it is out of stock on their site.

The medal represents the painting of M. Jacq:

To the right of the medal will be inserted the name of the ship, I do not know in what form yet. And to the right of the name, a flag of the White Star Line also inlaid in teak.

I finally poured the first resin layer yesterday.

I had some small leaks despite the good dose of silicon applied for the waterproofing at the level of the mold and the box, fortunately it was not important, I could seal.

I have a new thin colored layer of 1 to 2 mm to pour on the port side, then I will make small waves with the MIG product.

This resin is a good product, the mixture must be precise in quantity to avoid a long hardening. Adding color will extend this time a bit. I didn't have any problems with bubbles, you have to follow the instructions when mixing. It takes at least 36 hours to set. And double that time to remove from the mold, especially with thicker pieces.

I was able to apply the second coat this afternoon, slightly tinted green with a mix of Humbrol matte 103 beige and Revell 39 green.

You really have to put 3 times nothing, half a drop for both. It will get even darker with the MIG wavelet product which is also tinted more greenish brown.

Tk Simon, I hope to visit this museum soon... It's planned for our second trip to Ireland.

The demoulding went almost well. I had a problem with the release agent, which must have reacted with the resin when I poured it. I shouldn't have used anything, the mould plates were so smooth that it wouldn't have stuck. Experience is the sum of our mistakes.

I was still confident because I had more than 0.5 mm to sand down to a smooth and transparent surface.

I was confident to recover the damage because I had seen this video a while ago, the guy was going a long way with his resin cut and re-polished.

I started with 240, 800 and 1000 paper, I don't have a 3000 at the moment, so I used a Belgom Alu polishing paste, then a polish. It's coming out quite well.

I still have to apply the wavelets.

Tks all!

Today I have put up my lampposts, the mooring rods, the fishing rod for my old unshaven Irishman who is trying to fish, but only seaweed for the moment 🤨 , the mooring line of the small boat in stretched plastic.  I still have to glue the capstans which are in paint.

I am waiting for brass plates to make a nameplate for the ship.

Some pictures.

Today I did some riveting.

A lot of them I must say! 3500 or so.

This plate will be fixed on the free wall of the quay, to be painted of course.

I was inspired by the Titanic's bulkhead which was raised from the ocean floor and which can be seen in museums and in travelling exhibitions.

Absolutely fantastic! Stunning. I was lucky to board the Normadic a good few years ago now in Belfast with my father. Awesome trip! And some good ale ;)

I wish a kit existed of her - preferably @ 1/200 to accompany the Trumpeter Titanic.

I look forward to seeing more + your dry dock is also stunning!!

Tks all!

Yes David, it must be really good. I hope to be able to make this visit soon...

I printed the sheet metal plate, it came out very well.

I also printed some porthole windows to practice this difficult exercise a second time.

Here the crystal resin windows have to fit perfectly into the window holes.

This is complicated in 3D resin because a printed hole will be 0.6 mm smaller than what you have drawn. And the window glass will also be 0.6mm larger, so you have to take this into account when drawing, not easy, but it works.

You can see on the drawing that the windows are smaller than the porthole. In the end, in real life, there will be no space left.

These Titanic windows are specific, they turn on a central axis to open. I couldn't paint the colour of the brass frame, it's too risky with a brush, but not impossible with Maskol.

This sheet metal panel is finished.

It's not easy to draw a straight line with the adhesive tape and the rivets for the airbrush. Better to spray with little thinner.

I still have a coat of bronze to apply, Revell 92. Otherwise it's Revell anthracite N°9 and Revell off-white N°5.

I'll see if I can give it a light patina, night is good for advice.

This is continually impressive Pascal.

I know the phrase “Museum Quality “ is somewhat overused on modelling forums, but this really is. Have you shown this build to the Museum?

@Rob:

No, museums do not like plastic in general, they prefer wood, canvas and brass. 🤨

Slight aging of the panel.

Screenshot-2021-03-25-16-12-35-402.jpg

I etched the brass plate with the electrolysis method with the cotton swab, it worked pretty well as explained in the video tutorial (part 2).

I need to cut it to size and polish it again, but it's not bad.
