British Tank M3 Grant "The English Patient"

Recommended Posts

  • 2 months later...

Hello all 🥳

After a longer absence on BM, I would like to present more pictures of the Grant today.

I must confess that this project strained my nerves - probably because I didn't like some things.
One reason were the colours and the camouflage of the tank.
So I decided to remove everything and repaint it completely.
I hope I got the English colours right - I like it much better than before 🧐
At the same time I continued to work on the figure-but because of the drying of the oil paints it went on slowly 😴
I hope the project will continue quickly, until then have fun with the pictures!

Great to see you and the Grant back MD!

The burnt out shades and textures look brilliant, looking forward to seeing it completed.

I've a feeling we are in for a treat when this finished. :frantic:

Hello Darryl

Thank you and yes - I am also very curious about the final result.
There have been many ups and downs so far, but the beauty of modelling is that (almost) everything can turn out well.
Unless you have a bad day and a hammer is nearby 😁

Great work all round. Did you convert the burnt wheels yourself or are they Verlinden (or some other make)?

John.

Hello John

Thanks and as for your question, I have my own lathe.
It works with a steady hand but also with a Dremel.

Hello all 🥳

Yesterday I finished painting the figure.
After the oil paints have dried, I will apply the matt varnish and dirt so that everything matches the background of the vignette.

The medic is ready for action, only the patient is missing... 🤕

That is a proper piece of kit? :analintruder:

Perhaps over kill for plastic modelling but as they say...."go big or go home!"

We had lathes at school, a few years ago now... Who forget to remove the chuck key before starting....not so much a parabolic arc but direct fire.

Yes, during my industrial training, one or two colleagues forgot their chuck key 😴
It flew through the workshop like a mortar shell, but fortunately there were no casualties 😅

BTW: To avoid further dangerous situations, I will buy a 3d printer for future modifications 🤓

Hello all 🥳

Today an update with 3 pictures of the weathering of the burn out effect.
I tried to accentuate some details with oil colours and after that pigments to filter the acrylic colours.
Today everything gets a satin clear coat for a rust pin wash and first dirt.
After that I will apply a chipping with worn effects or hairspray to show smoke and soot.

Wow, I am thrilled. Nothing more to add!

Two of them to build in 35 from MinArt with interior.

Go on this way!

Happy modelling

Thank you for your comment.
Yes, I would have preferred the Miniart kit because of the interior, but it wasn't on the market at the time.
The Grant is a really beautiful and unusual model, which I can only recommend to everyone.

Hello all 🥳

Today again a small update from the Grant.
I have been working on the burnt-out areas for the last week and yesterday I painted the first rust effects in various places.
I would like to depict a burnt-out look that has already been there for some time.
That's why the soot and rust are not so visible and rather annealed steel in dark colours is in the foreground.
Streaks and pigments are still being applied in detail, but the basis has been created.
Have fun!

Jeeez! To say you've a talent for this stuff is a massive understatement. Just tremendous work and a real eye for the colours and textures of scorched paint and metal.

The corrosion inside the tool box is exemplary too btw!

Superb workmanship/artistry!

Hello all 🥳

Before I start I would like to thank everyone who has written 🤗
I am happy that you like the model and it drives me to achieve a hopefully perfect result 🤓

Things are progressing and today I would like to present you some dusty pictures.
A desert scene and a bright camouflage painting on top of that is not so easy to realise in my opinion, as everything can look monotonous and boring very quickly.
As a model builder, you naturally want to present an attractive model to the viewer, so you have to pay attention to the scale effect and not overdo it - less is more, as is often the case.
I try to use nature effects sparingly, whether dust or snow.
Contrast is always very important for me, as with figure painting, because everything is quite small.
Ok, now to the process:
I used Enamels as a base because they have a longer drying time and so corrections are possible. Applying mud, snow or dust is always a bit like Russian roulette-with acrylic everything has to fit, otherwise you mess up the model.
Of course, the burnt-out areas also get their dust off, but sparingly, because pigments still follow.
To introduce a few harmonious colour differences, I applied a highly diluted violet filter to the darker areas.
According to the colour wheel, this goes quite well with yellow tones.

Now have fun!

spacer.png

i use only 2 colours for the base

spacer.png

less is more

spacer.png

also dust on the rusty areas. this works in my opinion much better than a dark pinwash 😎

spacer.png

some dust streaks. This picture shows the different burned metal colours on the side quite good.

You must bear in mind that these bright spots must not be matt, as wind and dust polish the metal 🧐

spacer.png

also here. some like it hot 😁

now some filter
