1:350 HMAS Collins Submarine - Quick Build !!

Gday BM Family,

This one just came in the mail and I wanted to smash it out before I returned to work on Monday so I could display it in my office. It only took 8 hours thanks to the simple one sprue and the wonders of quick drying acrylic paint !!

I've been a part of the Collins sustainment enterprise for around 14 years now (as a civvie) - surpassing my service in the RAN on skimmers.... Started out maintaining Combat System, EW and Comms and for the past 6 or so years I've been managing the In Service Support of the Weapon System maintenance (the 6 holes at the bow ).

This kit was quite accurate except for maybe the Radar and some newer platform modifications, it also included decals that marked the first launch with the ship builder ASC's flag and bow marlings, special markings for gold star vessel Sheean, a fleet proficiency award she received some years back. There's so much you could do with these kits - band new launch, in service, also marine growth, all 6.... but I decided I would depict it as HMAS Collins straight out of an Intermediate Docking..... one of the maintenance cycles we carry out here in Western Australia.....

Submarine shipbuilding.... whats all the fuss ??

WIP is here:

Thanks for looking.

Cheers

JJ

Nice one

Cheers Devo, I thought maybe down the track I would do the different variants, at least the visible ones like the launch, Dechaineux and Sheean... I now tirelessly searching for the 1/350 ANZAC which is out of production !!

The ANZAC was only produced in limited numbers, I saw about 10 of them at Model expo in Melbourne some years ago which were snapped up in seconds. Never heard of a full production run.

Cheers mate,

Ant, I wasn't aware showcase models had finished up, sad news..

Yes, the owner passed and his partner opened a small shop in the city to sell up what was left of all the remaining stock. You can still find the Collins and Bushmasters around for reasonable prices.

Nice work JJ. Had the pleasure of working for 92WG during ex Kakadu V off Darwin in 2000, when the Waller and Dechaneux were very new boats. I recall them spending a fair amount of the ex in port sorting out teething problems and technical issues! Also had a few drinks and a most interesting discussion in the mess with a female LtCdr off one of the subs. I must pick up one of those Collins kits one day. I notice one online seller has multiples of them still for sale.

Cheers mate, used to really love the Darwin runs after exercising up there, it was usually the place we would get up to the most mischief whilst getting into the least trouble !!
