1/48 Typhoon FGR.4, 6 Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is a bit of 'fun' side project that I've silently been working on for the last month. It's a 1/48 Revell Eurofighter Typhoon in the markings of ZK316, of 6 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth.

This model was actually built a number of years ago (possibly 4-5) and somewhere along the line was damaged, not beyond repair, but a few bits had broken off and the canopy started to show small cracks within the moulding. I think that is quite common with Revell's Typhoon canopies for some reason. Anyway, I didn't want to bin it and since I had some scrap decals from a previous Typhoon build, I decided to try and give this one a new lease of life. The paint was a bit rough as this was my last fully hand brushed model, so after carefully removing all missiles, landing gear and so on, I sanded over the entire model with various sanding sticks to give me a nice smooth surface. No work was needed on the fuselage so this was quickly prepped for the re-spray. (I forgot to take a picture of it before I started the repairs).

Once sorted, I checked over all the missiles and sub assemblies and happy with those, the model was repainted and decals for 6 Squadron added. They were a mix 'n match of Revell along with Xtradecal and not entirely accurate, although ZK316 does, or at least did, serve with 6 Sqn as late as 2018. Due to the numerous layers of paint, I had to go over all the panel lines with a very fine HB pencil, a tedious process that took a number of hours.

Paints used were MRP - Camouflage grey for the airframe, Medium Sea Grey for the nose and Light grey for the wheel wells. Weathering is a mixture of Abteilung oils. Extras that were used on the original build and recycled here were an Airwaves resin seat, Eduard cockpit etch (this is still in original state) Phase Hanger Resin (through I think they were Two Mikes Resin at the time!) FOD inserts, AIM-120C AMRAAM from Hasegawa and a spare set of AIM-132 ASRAAM from another Typhoon kit. I only added a fresh mask and some extra Eduard etch for the small antenna under the nose. The 'armed' placard behind the windscreen was tactically added to hide a blemish in the clear part :lol:

Anyway, enough waffle.

Beside my 1(F) Squadron FGR.4 I finished last month:

I'm quite surprised this turned out as well as it did, given that it was simply a quick makeover, but it I'll be happy to keep it on the display shelf and forms the second model of my plan to represent all the frontline RAF Typhoon squadrons.

Thanks for looking and stay safe.

Great refurbishing or MLU!

Which Asraam launchers did you use? All Revell?

Thanks Werner

The inboard ASRAAM launchers were made from the kit supplied pylons with a LAU launcher of some variant from the spares box popped on top. It's not fully accurate but close enough. I did the same on both the models shown above.

@swralph cheers!
