Protected Cruiser "VARYAG" (Viking) 1/350 scale by Zvezda

It's a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but moulding seems crisp and precise, with no flash to be seen. I'm adding PE, brass barrels and brass masts, I must be mad. As you'll see the gun barrels are a wee bit small, and to fit them means cutting off the plastic barrel and then drilling into the guns action. I've done one and it is fine, only 7 more to go of this, the big guns. As for the smaller ones, we shall see.

Yup, attaching the barrels can be a pesky task. Looks like you did a superb job.

If I can do the rest of the ‘big’ guns that well, I’ll be a very happy bunny. It’s the smaller ones that are going to keep me awake. I’m not confident, so I might chicken out. Whatever happens, I’ve made this build a lot more complicated that it would be ‘out of the box’.

I understand about making a build more complicated. I'm always saying that my next build will be only be an "Out-of-the-box". Yah right! A third of the way through I have a bright idea (DUMMY), and then six months later I'm only half way completed.

Hah, I understand about that!😁 I think it'll be worth it in the end though. That gun looks good.

That bit at the stern - I've see diagrams with ships of that era and later having it, and a ladder descending from it to the waterline. It could be a permanent boat-boom or platform of sorts, or a support for a 'Captain's walk'. Regards, Jeff.

Jeff. I just looked at the instructions. You’re right, it is a support for a ‘balcony’.

I am looking forward to this build.  Can I ask which PE set that is, it looks very comprehensive. W

It was a bit misleading when I ordered the PE from Hannants, https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ZVE9014?result-token=hg7kC

the picture on their website only shows one sheet, but there are two. I’m glad the ratlines are included, as they are not with the kit itself and I wouldn’t have fancied making them.

Not much to show, big (?) guns finished, just a bit of paint touch up. Deck painted and first coat of white. I am a bit disappointed with the Eduard PE, I was supposed to fit a cover over the steps in the deck, but when I came to bend them, they just fell to pieces. Don't think it'll make a lot of odds, but it is a shame. Just so long as the railings and ratlines don't fall to bits, it'll be ok.

Jon

This is the shape of the steps covers.

And this is the PE, VERY delicate and thin and as it bent it fell to bits, totally beyond fixing.

Good evening, fellow inmates.

Little bit today, I seem to spend my time figuring out how to do things. But progress is being made, I've assembled the masts from the brass sets, they advised soldering the yard arms to the mast, something I've never done on a kit, soldering. Well, what the heck.......and it WORKED, and looks ok (I think).

Painted the white area of the hull, just got to figure out (see what I mean) how to mask the white to paint the green lower hull, without getting any green paint bleed under the tape.

Also, started on the bridge (?), little bit of PE, decided against the PE railings, I know my limits. And am NOT going to replace the smaller guns barrels, far TOO small.

Gidday, good bit of soldering. Regards, Jeff.

Jeff.

Thanks. Might need a bit more filing, but not bad for a first attempt.

Good morning from a sunny Somerset.

PE railings fitted, to a sort of walkway over the deck (not as per instructions) but look ok to me, lower hull painted green and guns fitted to the decks.

I was quite pleased with the success of the masking of the white, no green paint bleed under onto the white, considering how many little bumps on the white area, that were just where you want to put the tape.

I will be fitting the decks to the hull today and then start adding super structure, so should see more progress as it will start to like a ship. And will start to get really fiddly.

Good Afternoon.

I've masked the hull to protect the paintwork and started parts of the superstructure. The walkway, was a bit distorted, so I taped it on as the glue dried. It hasn't popped off yet, so I guess it's going to stay.

Impressive!

Every cat would love such splendid catwalk! Me too...

And these tiny, black footprints on such beautifull light decks and white walls.

From coal-bunk to the wheel-house. Up and down, here and there. And back. And again!

P A R A D I S E !!!

Meeeeoooowww....

By 'eck, this is a fiddle. And I haven't even started the rigging etc.

Fore and aft bridges are now fitted to the hull, as are all the ventilators and life boat davits. There will be a touching up of the paint as I go.

If ever I think of doing another ship of this scale, just shoot me.

Gidday Jon, I'd use blanks if I did. You're doing a terrific job of this. I've never done a ship of this era. Perhaps I should. Regards, Jeff.

Jeff.

You are probably right about the blanks, less messy. But this 1/350 scale is just so small, although I have to say that the detail of the moulding that has been achieved is most excellent. I started this ship when I was waiting for the PE sets for the Revell 1/144 HMCS Snowberry, these have now arrived, so I will continue with that once this is finished. I will attempt the rigging, but the instructions aren't too clear, but I'll try and give a representation of it.

Meanwhile, I've been on the Internet (I really shouldn't) and found this. I love the look of these early warships, so steampunk. Much better scale is 1/144, I can at least see the parts. I've had a quick look in the box and it looks good, even got a one piece hull !

Yes but then you will want to add more details the more you can see it's part of the never ending trap of ship building  :hypnotised:

Hah, I’m safe with the Chih Yuen, I can find (yes, foolish me, I looked) no after market parts, but it does come with PE. Don’t know about the never ending trap of ship building, I seem to add PE to every build. 😳

I think you are doing a Grand job - particularly nice work on the mast soldering and the walkways.

Speedy progress!!

Like the look of the Chih Yuen;)

Cheers Rob.
It’s coming on ok, just don’t look too close. It’s to be viewed from.................a distance. I to, thought I did ok with the masts, it ended up easier then I thought it would.

Bit slow at the moment. The old body is not at its best.

But we have funnels, so it now looks like a ship. Life boats next, then masts. And then.................rigging.
