Second from the bottom on the right.

Thanks, missed that one 😳, scanning quickly for the FAA acronym 😃

Unfortunately, I do not trust the veracity of this scheme. From what I have found, EZ316 (built as AT-6D-NT 42-84460) was really an Mk. III bird and I could not find any photographic evidence from WWII (only from 1953, when the scheme was already "trainer silver": https://www.aviationphotocompany.com/p390954246/h5ca0364e#h5ca0364e)

Ok, so not only EZ316 is Harvard III (and not Harvard II as claimed), but according to the "Fleet Air Arm Aircraft" book (by R. Sturtivant) it has arrived to AAU Martin Hearn, Hooton Park on 10.5.1944. Definitely not "Royal Navy, 1943". Considering this, the colour scheme may be completely bogus.

At least the decal sheet description does not have as many inaccuracies as the write up that accompanies the artwork on Wings Palette:

>Harvard Mk.IIa "Hatters Castle"

>Unit: 1832 NAS, FAA
>Serial: 203/JA (EZ316)
>This aircraft (NA-81 supplied under Lease-Lend) was used from 1942 onwards as an advanced trainer by the Royal Navy. It is shown in post-war (about 1958) markings, still with wartime insignia, serving at Stretton.

>Artist: unknown
>Source: "Great Aircraft of the World", Book Editor: Len Cacutt Publishers: Marshall Cavendish Books Ltd. 58 Old Compton Street, London W1V 5PA"

“JA” was the station code for HMS Blackcap / RNAS Stretton in the late 40s, before it changed to “ST”.

1832 Sqn RNVR was based at Culham, but 1831 Sqn RNVR was based at Stretton from 1947; the wiki says it was equipped with Seafire 15s and 17s, and one Harvard. This may be that one Harvard, but in 1948 rather than 1958.

This is backed up by Ray Sturtivant’s FAA Fixed Wing Aircraft since 1946 book, which has it arriving a Stretton on 20 Aug 1947, serving as “203” and “201”, before going to Donibristle for overhaul on 5 September 1949. No mention of the “Hatters Castle” name, though.

The book then says EZ316 then spent time with 799 Sqn at Yeovilton before going to the RNAS Gosport station flight on 18 June 1951.

It doesn't have any photos of EZ316, unfortunately. There is a photo of a Harvard with 1831 Sqn, but that is KF500, again coded as “203”, in 1951, with “ST” station code and I would guess High Speed Silver with yellow training bands scheme.

While the artwork above has been repeated numerous times - including green / grey rather than green / earth upper surfaces:

http://www.clavework-graphics.co.uk/aircraft/northamerican_t6/texan_027.html

I haven’t been able to find any photographic evidence.

Unfortunately, while EZ316 is mentioned on some other threads on Britmodeller:

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234957947-royal-navy-havards/

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234970923-fleet-air-arm-harvards-–-variant-analysis-observations-and-queries/

They also don’t help with evidence.

  Jonathan.

Heads up for anyone that's interested. Just had a reply from Zdeněk at Peewit. There is a canopy and separate camouflage mask set being produced for the Special Hobby Harvard. Should be with Hannants in a few weeks. Here's the message I got;

Hi Steve,

thank you for your interest about Peewit masks. I just have masks for Special Hobby Harvard prepared. If all goes well I want offer them to the Hannants during next week. The time from ordering by Hannants, production, sending, and now also customs procedure last about 5 weeks. I am also preparing paper camouflage masks for this kit for both two camouflaged variants included in this box.

Best regards

Zdeněk Čejka

Phew! That's going to save a lot of time cutting up Tamiya tape! Many thanks to Zdeněk at Peewit!

The RAF only had one yellow.  It was called Yellow.

Weren't the Gnats of the Yellowjackets a different shade (Lemon Yellow)?

Cheers,

Andre

Indeed they were.  Not used however on Harvards in WW2.  I'm certain that other hues of yellow have been used RAF aircraft at times, but not taken from an officially prescribed list.  It is however possible (even likely), I've never seen it discussed, that US-built and delivered Harvards used a US paint manufacturer's approved equivalent, and that the Lend-Lease ones used another US-approved paint, though the USN's yellow was very close, at least in layman's terms.  At this time the USAAC was not painting its advanced trainers in their own yellow, which was indeed a lemon-yellow.

@Julien Thanks for the review! Got five of these in the stash now and can't wait to get cracking on them.

Further to my previous post, just had another reply from Zdeněk at Peewit. Now available to pre-order from Hannants, three Peewit sets for the SH Harvard. Big thanks to Zdeněk for taking the time to keep me posted on my original enquiry. Great customer service from Peewit.

As a rule, I usually cut up and make my own masks from Tamiya tape, but for a Harvard, these should be a God send!

Yes I normally do the same, but for the likes of the Harvard and a TBM I recently did masks help a lot.

Of course it comes with an option for an arrestor hook equipped SNJ-5 used for carrier qualifications on the USS Wolverine, after I did the mods from scratch and printed my own decals back in 2005!  And of course I'll be picking one up.  I recently grabbed two of the Harvard sets at the IPMS USA Nationals in Omaha.
