I would like to wish all our customers only the very best in 2021. We believe the upcoming year is going to be much better than the last one. Although 2020 was not unsuccessful for our company at all. Our plans for the first half of 2021 seem to be, at least to us, very interesting. One of the most exciting models we are going to release this spring is, no doubt, the Westland Whirlwind Mk.I in 1/32, which is in the final stage of preparations now. Just before being finished is yet another project which originates in our cooperation with Eduard. After the exquisite Bf 109 E-4, the Bf 109 E-3 version is going to hit the market this February, after that we are going to jointly produce the Tempest Mk.II. Our boxing will offer the so-called Hi-Tech style with resin detail parts including a partial replica of the engine with some of the cover panels open. The fire which struck Eduard company only made our collaboration deeper. We were more than happy to offer them the free capacity of our injection machines, to help them recover from the loss of their sprues stock. It also means the Tempest Mk.II kit will most likely be produced using our injection machines. And more joint projects will follow, too.

Another new kit of our own production you can expect this spring is the taller (or precisely, more bulged) canopy version of the SF-260 in 1/72. This type is being prepared also in 1/48, with both canopy styles. And the turbo-prop version SF-260TP will also follow, in both scales of course. Another highly attractive model will no doubt be the first of the 1/72 Mirage III/5 family. We will also bring you one more re-release of an older Mirage F.1 kit, as well as its reboxing with new schemes. The Mirage F.1EQ/ED is still quite sought after so we have decided to restock it. Sometime during the spring, a new reboxing will be released, this one portraying the South African F.1AZ/CZ version. Our range of WW2 aircraft will benefit from the addition of a couple of version of the Japanese transport and training aircraft, the Tachikawa Ki-54. You can start looking forward to one more 1/72 P-40 and the range of post-war jets will welcome a new member as well, the 1/72 A.W. Meteor Mk.14.

In the first half of 2021 we also plan to release the reboxing of another company’s kit -  Academy ‘s 1/72 AT-6G Texan. We will supply new injected canopy parts as well as a set of resin parts to convert it into the earlier war-time AT-6/SNB version,as well as the Harvard Mk.IIB-IV produced for the Commonwealth.

We are also preparing some more kits of various military vehicles which will be available under the Special Armour label. There will be kits made from the molds we bought from the MK72 company and those of our own design and production. The first kit from the MK72 molds will be the 1/72 Sd.Kfz. 250/1 Alte Ausf. A.

Let me also point out a couple of detail sets from the CMK range, namely those for the new 1/72 Bf 109E kit. Several various resin sets will also be prepared and offered for the new Mirage III and Whirlwind kits. We are also working on a couple of finely detailed figures in various scales. And last but not least, we will soon offer you a couple of new tools for working with resin.

We hope and believe that all those things I have mentioned above and which are going to be available during the first half of  2021 will be interesting to you, our dear fellow modellers and customers. We look forward to hearing from you and getting your orders.

If the world were as it used to be, I would have had the foreword to this month’s Newsletter finished long time ago. And by now, I would already have arrived to the Nuremberg Toy Fair and had met up with many of you in person. I would have had much to do preparing for the exhibition, but I would have felt much happier. There are people and things that I miss terribly. But everything seems to be the other way round now, doesn’t it. The Modellfan magazine has decided not to interrupt the tradition and to go on with awarding the model companies and their new products with the Modell des Jahres (The Model of the Year) prize. One of the companies who have proudly received this award was also Special Hobby and the awarded model is the new and really excellent 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 (SH72439).

This, too, pushes us to try and keep the mark of quality really high. And as we are unable to showcase the coming news in flesh and blood at the fair, we will be doing our best and bring you the latest information on social platforms. We will be really happy if you, our business partners, can keep in touch and share with us your querries, ideas, requests or needs. And while we cannot meet in person, temporarily I hope, the more we need to communicate with each other via any other possible means.

When, in our last Newsletter, I gave you the promise to keep on producing models of 1/72 military vehicles, we still had not finished the new moulding tools of the three new artillery models. Those were the 3,7cm PaK 36 and 7,5cm PaK 40 guns and the 21cm Nebelwerfer 42 launcher. But as of now, the moulds are already finished and sometimes during this year we will start selling both kits individually anwould have been presented at the Fair, as it is you will have to check them just via photos. And perhaps you might as well start looking forward to our March Newsletter where a surprise might be waiting for you.

Unfortunately, the situation in the Czech Republic has not been good for a couple of months. The Covid pandemics affects every aspect of the life here, including the production of the plastic model kits. Even though the Special Hobby employees, just for a few expections, had not contracted the disease, the quarantines, isolations and the need to work from home do complicate the situation even further. So, the models previously scheduled for March release, ie. the 1/32 Whirlwind, 1/48 Tempest and the 1/72 Harvard Mk.II/IIA/IIB, will most likely have to wait until April. During March, we will able to offer you just two kits instead, these being the re-released SH72418 SF-260 (which got sold out really quickly at first) and the SH72440 Model 139WC/WSM/WT ‘Chinese, Siamese and Turkish Service’.

The range of spray painting masks also gets wider still, now we are adding the pre-cut masks for both the single-seat and two-seat Mirage F.1 models. The offer of CMK resin sets is also really interesting one, besides the sets for our new and superb Bf 190E models, we have also prepared for you a couple of undercarriage wheels for the B-25 in 1/48 as well as in 1/72. The largest set I want to mention today is the resin cockpit for the ICM’s 1/48 A-26 Invader. Some more sets for this kit are being developed, including those with the undercarriage wheels. Our team are also working on resin sets for the Arma Hobby’s 1/72 Hurricane, let me point out now the sets enabling you to convert the Hurri to a photo-reconnaissance, or PR versions. In April, we will also start selling a new PLT range resin kit, the long-promised 1/48 GAL 48 Hotspur. We are also working on a couple of accessory sets for ship models, German life rafts and 15cm naval guns. The above list cannot be complete but even so we do believe you and your customers will find many an interesting item there. We will be looking forward to receiving your orders from the current newsletter as well as from the future ones.

When will the Whirlwind kit be out? When might we expect it? These were possibly the most often asked questions of the past year. And yes the wait is over now, the 1/32 scale Whirlwind is finally revealed in this month’s Newsletter. And as it usually is, it’s some other kit’s turn now, some other kit will be eagerly awaited and hailed with those very questions on its release date. What kit do you think it might be? Seems that the 1/72 Mirage III is taking over the imaginary relay baton. And be sure we are always doing our best to have as many apt kits in the pipeline for the race as only possible.

So, what new kit might deserve your eager attention now? Will it be the P-40M Warhawk / Kittyhawk Mk.III (SH72382), Mirage F.1AZ/CZ ‘The South African Commie Killers’ (SH72435) or even the Tachikawa Ki-54 Hei – Otsu – Kó  Hickory family? Or perhaps the night figther Meteors su as the Mk.14? Or even the quarter scale AH-1G Cobra or the Heinkel He 177A?

These all are brand new kits, but we will be offering some rather interesting re-releases as well of course. So this year will also see the reissue of such kits as the Mirage F.1CE/CH (SH72289) or Mirage F.1CG (SH72294), and also the still asked for -2 Super Mystère  'Sa ar – Israeli Storm in the Sky'. In new guise we will be also releasing such nice kits as the 1/72 Vampire or the Viggen, this one in both scales.

Special Hobby is not just about styrene models, you know it. You can expect really wide range of new resin sets, too, and now we would like to bring to your attention the upcoming 1/72 and 1/48 Beaufighter Mk.II conversion sets, yes this is the Merlin in-line engine version, so very much different from the usual Beau. These sets will fit the Airfix (1/72) and Revell (1/48) kits. We also cannot forget to mention the upcoming Junkers Ju 88A-1 and F-16MLU (both for 1/72 Revell), A-26 Invader (1/48 ICM) or even the Gloster Meteor Mk.8/9 (Airfix) sets.

The closest models in our offer, however, will be the 1/72 Harvard Mk.II / IIA / IIB, the Whirlwind in 1/32 mentioned in the introduction and the SIAI-Marchetti SF-260EA / D / EU ‘Late Bulged Canopy Type’in 1/72. Our offer  also includes one new Simple Set, the 1/72 Bf 109E-3.

If the 1/48th AH-1 Cobra will be a new tool kit (thread), the 1/48th He-177 Greif should be a rebox from MPM kit (link).

Special Hobby’s newsletter seems to indicate the He 177 is a new kit. The MPM tool dates from 2006 and, being a short run mould, is not close to Special Hobby’s current standards. It’s been 7 years since that kit was last re-released, what kind of shape must the mould be in by now anyway?

Either way, I’m likely to get one; current prices for the MPM kit on the secondhand market are prohibitive. If this is a new tooling, expect to see a flood of MPM kits on eBay as that was never an easy kit to build.

Newsletter May 2021

Quote

This May’s top model is the quarterscale Tempest Mk.II, released in the Hi-Tech format and dubbed ‘The Last Radial RAF Fighter’. The Tempest Mk.II aeroplane belongs to the period just after WW2 when the last radial-engined fighter planes reached the limits of their performance. They were the very top of fighter planes of the time and in some respects outperformed even their jet counterparts. Along with the Eduard team, with whom this model kit has been prepared, we aimed for this model to become nothing less than the very best this category of models can offer. And let me say I am convinced we have succeeded in this goal. There is also one more new model to be released this month, the South-African Mirage F.1. The title of the kit has been chosen perhaps a bit controversial - ‘The South African Commie Killers’. But bear in mind please that in our country, the then Czechoslovakia, we had the chance to experience communism firsthand. And we do remember that this utopian ideology simply did not work at all. And now, if we compare the racist regime of South Africa, restricted just to the southern areas of Africa, with all the communist regimes, effort to export of the communist revolution to the world, then there is no wonder that South Africa simply had no other option than to try and stop the Cuban commie engagement in Angola. Unfortunately, various ex-KGB agents and people longing for old commie orders, are still trying to destabilize our country, Europe as well, and in fact, the whole world. Good example of this is the explosions of the ammo depots at Vrbětice and in Bulgaria. Well, you must forgive me this somewhat political editorial. The good news, however, is that neither the old communists nor their current successors did not manage to destroy our hobby and the production of the models. Basically, the communist economy taught Czech modellers how to improvise and help themselves because a lot of goods were simply not available. After the fall of communism, this handiness became the basis on which Special Hobby and other Czech modelling companies were built. And in case you dislike my slightly political editorials, just please do not read them and rather focus on what we have in common, the models we produce.

Quote

Even though the past month saw just two new items from the SH range of plastic model kits, we need to admit that May was really very hectic. And not just May, the whole spring of 2021 is literally packed up to the brim with new items. On the top of the sales firmly stands the 1/32 Westland Whirlwind Mk.I(SH32047) with the Messerschmits Bf 109E-3 and E-4 (SH72443 and SH72439) following closely, along with the 1/48 Tempest and several other 1/72 kits as are the SF-260, Mirage F.1, Martin 139WC/WSM/WT and the military vehicle models the Sd.Kfz250/1 and Sd.Ah 115 Flatbed Trailer. And yes we do believe that all we have prepared for the month of June will be equally well received by the modelling community. Going to be re-released is the 1/72 SMB-2 Super Mystère  'Sa`ar – Israeli Storm in the Sky' kit, being joined on the shelves by such hot new items as the P-40M Warhawk/Kittyhawk Mk.III kit (offering a really nice choice of schemes), the sleek Japanese twin engined Tachikawa Ki-54 or even one more Mess, which this time is the machine gun-fitted E-1 version of our earlier-released and highly acclaimed Bf-109E3/4 kit.
And the wave of new kits is definitely not going to get any weaker in the months to come. We are simply set to overwhelm you with plethora of new items such as the Meteor Mk.14, 3.7cm PaK 36 German Anti-tank Gun’, 7.5 cm PaK 40 ‘German Anti-tank Gun’, Potez 25B2 ‘Polish Jupiter Version’ or even a couple of re-released kits with new decal guises as the Vampire Mk.3 and Mk.9, 1/72 and 1/48 Viggens or the Vautour IIB. We are also cooperating with ICM to rebox their 1/32 model of the Hi-Tech version of the AH-1G Cobra model of the Vietnam War fame. The same chopper, just a bit smaller (so in 1/48 scale) is currently being worked on by our team with the first test shots already revealed, and we are so very pleased that the images got huge attention from the readers of our blog. There is also the 1/72 Mirage III in the pipeline, waiting to be finished and released, but all in due time.
Our own pre-cut painting masks may be around just shortly now, but they have already achieved the status of really handy product able to provide the modeller with much needed assistance in painting some difficult areas. So, it leads to make the range of such masks even wider. In this newsletter, you will find our new masks for the 1/48 Tempest and 1/72 P-40M/Kittyhawk Mk.III. In the next one, there will be similar sets for the Ki-54.
The resin sets usually reflect the latest new models available on the market. So, this time our team are working on a couple of sets for the ICM 1/32 Tiger Moth or Tamiya’s 1/48 F-4B Phantom II. We cannot forget our own models for sure, so start looking for the coming sets for the 1/72 Messerchmitt Bf109 or 1/32 Whirlwind. Following the serious success of the Recon Lightning sets, we are working on conversion sets for Merlin engine powered Beaufighter Mk.IIs in both major scales.
A new range of cutting tools is also getting ready for the customer, it is supposed to become available later this year and will increase or range of modelling tools.
Unlike the previous, slightly political editorial, you can see that today we have tried to focus only on the topic common to us, modellers. However, allow me to get back, just for a tiny while, to last month’s editorial, which raised rather strong response from the readers. Those which came from abroad were in majority quite positive ones. Those negative, however came mainly from our fellow citizens. So it might seem that the old Czech saying ‘The hit goose always squeals the most’ (which can be loosely translated as ‘He that has a great nose thinks everybody is speaking of it’) once again proved itself right. Well, never mind. As I already wrote last time, the model kit production is running well and we do believe it will continue to do so in the future, too.

This summer will see not just the release of a couple of new model kits, we have prepared reissues of several succesfull models from the past too. So you might start looking forward again to the 1/32 scale Heinkel He 100D also known as the (fictional of course) Heinkel He 113 in German markings, plus the Spanish and Moroccan Mirage F.1. Up the sleeve we also have the Dornier Do 27 as flown with the Bundesluftwaffe and Belgian or Spanish air forces and the French, Danish and Dutch Sea Otter.

The brand new kit releases for this month comprise, among others, the 1/72 3.7cm PaK 36 anti tank gun in the colours of several countries including China. Similarly, in the month of August we will be releasing yet another German cannon, the 7.5cm PaK 40, in the colour schemes of the Wehrmacht (no surprise) and even something as exotic as the Vietnamese army as they put this weapon in service against Uncle Sam’s Navy vessels.

Other models to become available during August are for example the NF Mk.14 version of the Meteor jet in British and French colours which interestingly offers a bit of a domestic flavour too as one of these Meteors was flown by M.Liskutin, a brave Czechoslovak pilot who had to flee his homeland twice, first because of the Nazi occupation and then, after the war again, when the communist régime had taken over our country.
So, just let me say I hope very much you will find our selection of models appealing and also let me wish a beautiful summer and do enjoy building our models.

Originally, I was supposed to be writing about our preparations for the 2021 IPMS USA Convention which is to take place in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the traveling conditions to the USA are of such nature that we have no other option than to give up on meeting up with our American friends there this summer. We regret it very much. But every cloud has a silver lining as we all very well know and so, instead of traveling across the pond, we simply decided to put all our effort and energy to preparing new model kits, resin sets and modelling tools.

This autumn is no doubt going to be very interesting for modellers, and for those in love with helicopters in particular. Most likely sometimes in October, we will be releasing a 1/32 AH-1G Cobra kit which will comprise the ICM styrene parts joined by our own detail resin sets and photo etches. On top of that, the modeller will also get a comprehensive and interesting sheet of decals and pre-cut painting masks. And something a bit similar is going to happen here with ex-Academy 1/72 model of the Junkers Ju 87G Stuka dive bomber.

Another model of the AH-1G Cobra chopper, this time in the quarter scale and produced solely by Special Hobby, is planned for a release sometimes late this year, or at least we are working hard to manage it in time. Our team are also doing their best preparing the release of the 1/48 SIAI-Marchetti. The very type, but in smaller 1/72 scale is going to be released this September in the already well-established Duo Pack & Book range, containing plethora of really eye-catching colour schemes and packed, as the name suggest, with a monographic pubication dealing with the type, produced by guys at H.M.H. Publications. This autumn will also see the release of several sets improving the detail levels of the Tamiya’s 1/48 F-4 Phantom II model. There will also be some more 1/72 Bf 109E sets for Special Hobby kit, or its Eduard’s reboxing. Also do start looking forward to a couple of 1/35 Panhard 178 / AMD 35 sets.

Eighty-two years ago, two men with moustaches made, through their foreign ministers, the decision to divide Europe and in effect start the Second World War. A secret appendix to the so-called Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact also provided for an attack on Poland. On 1 September, 1939, the Wehrmacht invaded Poland. Three weeks later, the Red Army attacked from the other side. The joint attack on two fronts met the resistance from Polish forces which lasted only until 6 October, 1939. But already on 22 September, 1939, a joint military parade of both the Wehrmacht and the Red Army took place in Brest-Litovsk to celebrate the victory.

And now we wish to commemorate the brave Poles and their struggle by releasing the 1/72 model of the Potez 25 B2 Polish Jupiter ‘Against the Tide’. This version flew and fought only in Poland and almost every one of them was eventually destroyed during the September 1939 invasion. Another model in this newsletter is the 1/72 Sea Otter  Mk.I/ASR Mk.II 'Foreign Service' wearing the colours of French, Dutch or Danish forces. The last injection model we will mention, but not the least in significance, is the double kit SF-260 in 1/72 released along with a special and very nice monographic publication. New CMK detail sets bring a plenty more to add to the quarter scale F-4B Phantom II (Tamiya) or the 1/32 DH.82 Tiger Moth (ICM). We believe that the most important resin cast set to offer you in this Newsletter would be the Messerschmitt Bf 109E Engine Set, designed both for the Special Hobby kits or their reboxing released by Eduard.

And it is this engine set that will definitely come handy to one of our upcoming new models. As soon as only possible, we are going to release the limited edition of the 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 ‘Legion Kondor’. We are also working on another release of the 1/72 DH.100 Vampire or the SAAB 37 Viggen in the same scale. Our team are also working hard on the already announced 1/72 family of the Mirage III kits or the speed record Buggatti 100P kit, also in 1/72. And it also seems very likely now that, before this year ends, we will be able to release three reboxings of kits made by other manufacturers joined by our own resin and etched detail parts. These kits are the 1/32 AH-1G Cobra and the Panhard 178, both from ICM and also Academy’s 1/72 Junkers Ju 87G. The AH-1G Cobra will be released in the Hi-Tech format, the Panhard will offer the so-far not released 178B version with the new turret. And the Junkers Ju87G will become the D version released with extra resin parts and etches.

It is said in September Newsletter, that Potez XXV Polish Jupiter is "A version of the Potez 25 which has never been kitted before." Actually there were two kits of this variant before, the Broplan vacu  ( https://www.scalemates.com/pl/kits/broplan-potez-xxv--191313 )  and a Hit-Kit injected one https://www.scalemates.com/kits/hit-kit-potez-xxv--135268, of course the SH kit is I hope far better then those two predecessors.

Well, this month’s Newsletter seems to be a bit about come-backs. The 1/48 Reggiane Re.2005 had appeared for the first time early in 2020 and got sold out completely very very fast. And now it has got back to our offer. As well as the 1/32 SH32054 Tempest Mk.II Hi-Tech,  SH32070 Tempest Mk.V Hi-Tech and SH32055 Tempest Mk.VI. These model kits were unavailable for some time due to the damage of the wing moulding block. So, a new mould had to be manufactured which now enables us to put the kits back to the stock. And the final comeback for this month is the limited batch of the 1/72 72560 Gloster Meteor PR Mk.10 ‘High-Altitude Photo-Recce Version’. This model has not been available since mid 2019. Now we have restocked it and made it available again for your orders.
However, we would like to present something else too, not just the re-issues, there are also some all-new kits today for you. So, why not mention the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 ‘J/88 Legion Condor’ then? The social media feedback seems to suggest this kit is going to become a real hit. But let‘s not underestimate the other two kits, both the ground-attack version of the 1/72 Viggen and the Vampire Mk.3 are surely destined to have a huge appeal to the modellers.
Our monthly offer would not be complete without the pre-cut mask sets designed for Special Hobby models. In fact, one of them is not only for our own model as it can be used for ICM’s AH-1G Cobra model. But as we have acquired a batch of the poly-bagged sprues from the colleagues at ICM and we are also working on the Hi-Tech format of the basic kit, we can offer this masking set now a bit in advance.
Resin cast sets bring really colourful range of accessories this month, from wheels to interior or cockpit sets and not just for aeroplane models, there are sets for 1/35 AFVs as well. So, I do believe, plenty of stuff to chose from.

The November Newsletter which you are just reading does bring not just the usual amount of Special Hobby models, masks and CMK resin sets. We are happy to point out now the premiere of the direct 3D print produced set, and there will be more of such or even complete models in the future. The direct 3D print sets can be distinguished by their orange colours so even though they will be offered among the usual CMK or Quick&Easy resin sets and under usual range of cat.numbers, whenever you see that orange colour, either of the parts themselves ort he instruction sheets, be sure that is the direct print. The future of the model accessories is Orange then.

You will also notice that the SA72001 SS-100 Gigant has been restocked and the re-issue  of the SA72002 SdKfz 11 Leichter Zugkraftwagen 3t in 1/72 is also underway.

There are four new H.M.H.Publications books available now.

The pandemics situation gets much more serious again as you can see in the news every day, but we are still planning our attendance at the 2022 Nuremberg Toy and Model Fair. And we also hope we will be able to meet as many of you, our business partners, as only possible. Even if the fair cannot take place next year, let us make sure we will still be preparing new models and sets as well as re-issues of some of our attractive models. And even though the fair cannot take place, you will be kept in the loop of course!

Today, we are bringing you this year’s final Newsletter. If I have to look back on this whole year, it is difficult to evaluate it. Now we have the fifth wave of the Covid pandemic here in the Czech Republic. So far, however, Covid has mostly avoided our company. This also contributed to the fact that we managed to distribute our products without major difficulties. That said, I do find the economic result of 2021 very satisfactory. I would like to thank all our business partners, customers and supporters for their support. I also would like to wish everyone the best in the year 2022, both in their personal and business life.

For next year, we are counting on our taking part in the Nuremberg Toy and Model Fair at the beginning of February. Our stand will be located in hall 7, its number will be B62.

At the fair, we intend to present the news for 2022. Of course, we are also looking forward to meeting our business partners. Among January news, you can start looking forward to  the 1/72 Bugatti 100, Vautour IIB, Panzerbefehlswagen 35(t)  and reissue of the Sunderland Mk.V. We will also be offering a wide range of CMK cast sets as well as new 3D printed accessories, the very first in a series.
