1/48 Tamiya F-14A, VF-1 'Wolfpack' Mil killer - Finished 14/04.

Recommended Posts

Main painting now completed. MRP as always a joy to work with. I've actually lowered my the PSI down to 12-15  instead of the 15-18 I sprayed at before and it seems to go on even better.

Just a few small areas of detailed painting now required - fin tips, exhaust shrouds, vents etc. Hoping to get that done tomorrow then it will be ready for gloss and decals.

More soon and stay safe

Really enjoying this. VF-1 is one of my favourite schemes. I have one Tomcat but two VF-1 schemes to choose from - 1975 Op Frequent Wind or 1991 USS Ranger VF-1 CAG with the rainbow stripes. Oh choices choices 😬

Cheers mate.

Tough choice that, maybe time to get another kit

My next one is likely to be a VF-154 jet from Iraqi Freedom or B conversion from Enduring Freedom.

I know. It's hard to resist the Tamiya in particular. But I must try... really... I... must... not... buy...another... Tomcat... arrrghh...

Couldn’t agree more! One more will do no harm

I’m really surprised they haven’t released either a late A or B version yet.

Very nice and smooth painting as always Dave.

Thanks mate.

Managed to finish off the painting today - cannon muzzle, exhaust shrouds, nav lights, metallic leading edge on the wings, fin tips, main landing gear bays (that weren't masked) and so on. Once done, I popped on the wing seal 'bags' and the refuelling probe was fitted into its position. The dorsal antenna were painted Light Ghost Grey, not Light Gull Grey as per the rest of the airframe. Seemed to be a common theme on the Gull Grey jets.

Top tip - paint the inside of the intakes and remove any intake masking before assembly. Good grief what a task it was to get those masks out.  I thought for a moment that April fools day was playing me a blinder, and by 'moment' I mean the hour it took me to get the blighters off. I don't know why I'm surprised as it was a 'top tip' that I tipped to myself on my last build. Forgot about it, clearly .

Will get a few coats of gloss on over the weekend in preparation for decals.

More soon and stay safe.

Decals on. A mixture of the Fightertown sheet and Tamiya stencils. I actually think the emblems on the tail fins are a little oversized (the decal sheet was designed for the Hasegawa kit so that could be a factor) but they'll suffice.

All sealed in with another coat of Alcad gloss. I've started to spray it now as opposed to brushing it on so still getting the hang of it. Need to play about with the PSI etc. The walkway decals were pinched from a D boxing as only one is included in the A kit. The tail fins have also been secured in position.

I would go for the later one simply because you can weather it more than the first one. The first Tomcats in service were kept in a very pristine condition (and thus, very glossy!!!).

Cheers,

Bill

Nice to see this with paint on and the VF-1 markings giving it that splash of colour on the Grey background.

Looking really smart with the decals on Dave, it really is a striking scheme with the Wolf's head on the tail.

Thanks chaps!

More done. Panel wash went on with the excess removed after about 45 minutes. Flat coat and some Abteilung oils followed. Didn't want to go too overboard as this jet seemed to be kept fairly clean. Once done, the landing gear went on along with the exhausts, pylons and probes:

Great job on the weathering Dave, nice and subtle and looks just like she does in the pictures.

Thanks mate!

Not much left to do now, hoping to get it finished off later this week.

A very nicely tooled up Tomcat Dave.

Thanks chaps! I’ve never built a Tomcat in the A2A load with no AIM-54 so it looks a bit odd to me

Nice work on the weathering. I was thinking the same about no AIM-54s and how strange the aircraft looked without them.

Thanks Mark!

Nearly there. Seats popped in this morning:

One of two small niggles I have with this kit (the other being a preference for clear navigation lights) is the lack of review canopy mirrors. Like I say, a very, very, very small set of niggles! Anyway, Eduard sort this out for a tuppence:

Just a small bit of clean up around the canopy needed (you can probably see the slight paint overlap between the black frame and outer grey). Other than that a few little additional bits of weathering and that will see it completed.
