That probe is much better than the kits effort. The glass thing underneath it is the cover for the Laser Ranger.

Thanks Mark, knew it was a sensor of some sort just not sure what!

Excellent work Dave, that metal pitot really does make a huge difference.

Cheers mate!

Small bit done this morning; front end cleaned up and masks fitted:

Also fitted two of the landing gear doors. I'm guessing the gap shown below shouldn't be there?

Final shot for now:

Looks a bit rough but a final wet and dry before priming will hopefully make it somewhat presentable before painting. Build wise, the airframe is pretty much done, with the exception of the aforementioned clean up along with masking up the rest of the cockpit. Landing gear is the only sub-assembly remaining to be built.

More soon and stay safe

  • DaveJL changed the title to 1/48 Airfix Jaguar GR.1A XX725 'Johnny Fart Pants'. Update 17/02.

A brief venture to the bench today. Sprayed the canopy framing and used the rest of the paint to check over some of the filled and sanded areas. Happy to report all looks well so far:

A bit of a pre-prime pre-shade of sorts! Hoping the primer coat doesn't show up too many blemishes. Landing gear assembled next. A bit bland but will suffice:

The Phase Hanger wheels needed a bit of attention. These are designed for the KittyHawk kit and so aren't perfect for the Airfix kit as they are. I just had to drill a slighty bigger hole in each of the wheels and trim down the attaching points on the landing gear legs. Fairly simple job, hopefully they'll sit nicely when fitted!

Not much but hoping to get a good few hours at the sub assemblies tomorrow.

More soon and stay safe.

looks like all the joints are good Dave.

The replacement wheels look very nice, some good details on them.

Hopefully mate! The wheels are much, much better than the kit parts!

A good few hours today painting and finishing the sub assemblies. Firstly I sprayed some dark green onto the fuel tank and, once set, over sprayed with the Desert Pink:

Several images of Op Granby Jags show the paint on the front of the tanks wearing away, exposing the green/grey underneath. So I decided to use the 'hairspray technique,' something which I have only ever done on armour before. Anyway, worked a treat!

50979999816_2b9058653f_b.jpg

A few more bits on the fuselage will need the same treatment, though it may be just as easy dry brushing! Anyway, moved on and painted the Phimat and AN/ALQ 101, with decals for the latter coming from the spares:

50980000956_a0801f4044_b.jpg

Some green was dry brushed onto the leading edges of the pylons before a Flory Wash and oil around the brackets etc was added. Same for the pylons:

Bombs and Aim-9s done:

Exhausts:

Finally, the landing gear. Ended up spraying the legs Camouflage Grey and weathering with some Flory Wash. The nose wheel was added and the door painted black as this forms part of the 'False Canopy':

50979296778_bee34ec077_b.jpg

I'll have to wait until the main landing gear is installed into the fuselage before fitting the wheels as they'll need set correctly to account for the bulges in the resin wheels. So, that's all the sub assemblies completed. I'm hoping to get a lick of primer on the airframe over the weekend then crack on with the painting next week.

More soon and stay safe

  • DaveJL changed the title to 1/48 Airfix Jaguar GR.1A XX725 'Johnny Fart Pants'. Update 25/02.

Slight progress to report; pre-shading done and I've also sprayed on some dark green around the lading edges and below the cockpit. XX725 appeared to have quite a worn tail fin leading edge as seen in the Takeoff magazine (bottom aircraft):

Note there's also some chipping below the canopy and in front of the windscreen. So those will be areas I'll focus on when it comes to the hairspray. Here's how it looks now, ready for the paint tomorrow:

I also added the two antenna behind the cockpit as my references show these to have been painted the Desert Pink also, with some of it wearing away exposing the black underneath.

More soon and stay safe,

Dave

Excellent work putting the green on so that you can weather the desert pink back to reveal it, just like the real thing and it will look really good when its done.

Thanks mate. I just hope I don't go overboard with the toothbrush when it comes to the chipping!!

More progress. Paint went on first thing this morning. Several light coats. The paint went on brilliantly as always:

I left that to cure fully for an hour or so. One of the added benefits of MRP is that they dry rock hard in very little time. Normally this is great, but it did make the scrubbing to get to the green underneath a bit tricky! Hairspray method is much easier with an acrylic top coat. Anyway, once I got the desired look under the cockpit and on the tail fin, I added some dry brushing in various areas to simulate random wear and tear. I also painted the airbrake wells, RWR sensors on the tail fin, nav lights and cannon muzzles.

Happy with that. Just need to mask up and spray the metallic areas aft of the exhaust area and then I'll be able to get some gloss on. I'm hoping to do that tomorrow and then get decals and weathering done on Friday.

More soon and stay safe

Looking good with paint on and the add ons done earlier look good. As for the aerials behind the cockpit I think ( although not absolutely sure) that the two aerials were removed for the war period and then refitted for the journey back to the UK.

Thanks mate! Regarding the aerials, I have seen a good few photos in my references that show them fitted; indeed the Take Off Magazine shows some photos from sorties with them fitted. One thing I did note from the MDF book, is that the author states the Jags received an upgrade package that included the removal of the dual aerials and the fitment of a single bladed antennae. From the photos I have seen, XX725 continued with the dual fit as did a number of others.

Looking really good Dave.

That is a very nice smooth coat of desert pink and the weathering back to reveal the dark green is very effective.

Cheers mate. I'm happy with how it looks, didn't want to go too overboard.

Got a bit more done today than I'd planned. The metallic exhaust area was masked and sprayed as my morning coffee was brewing. Once set, I added two coats of Alclad Aqua Gloss and left to cure for a few hours. I then decided that it wouldn't take me too long to do the decals, all 14 of them, and  indeed it didn't. I lightly misted over the decals with the Desert Pink to tone them done and make them look a bit worn. Not too much though. Sealed in with a top coat of gloss et viola!

The 'False Canopy' gave me a bit of a conundrum. With the landing gear door making up part of it, I butchered part of the decal provided in the MA sheet to make up the rear part and then painted the side bits. I've no idea if it's correct but looks ok to me and is a bit of a mash up of some of few pictures I've seen of these along with a guide @Jabba sent to me.

The front end; Mr Fart Pants was certainly dropping more than a few smelly ones it would seem

Hoping to get the panel wash and oil weathering done tomorrow with the sub assemblies going on over the weekend.

More soon and stay safe.

Always makes me kinda sad to see Johnny Fartpants again.

For those not aware the pilot of this perticular Gulf war Jag was flown by Flt Lt Stephen Shutt

Steve was briefly a member of this Britmodeller community  under the forum name jagmate until he lost his life in a light aircraft crash in 2008 along with his passenger.

May they both Rest in Peace.

On a more cheery note Excellent work on the kit Dave.

I wasn’t aware of that at all. Hopefully I can do Flt Lt Shutt and his Jaguar some justice with my effort.

I only knew him for a short time having been introduced to him by Neil aka Mr Paragon on these forums. I believe they had been friends for many years.

Seemed a very nice chap, taken far too soon sadly

Very sad indeed.

Really nice work so far Dave, like your attention to details !!

Thanks mate.

I was able to get a good bit of work done today. Firstly the Flory Models panel wash went on. Excess removed after about 40 mins. Once done, I added various oils across the airframe to give it a suitable level of grime. Think it came out quite well:

51006701101_1e6d3c875d_b.jpg

51006808102_e9780d890f_b.jpg

All sealed in with another coat of matt. Once dry, I moved on and added the landing gear. The main legs required some fiddling to get to sit and even after said fiddling, the port side is still at a bit of an angle in relation to the fuselage. It's not ideal but it has had no affect on the way the model sits so I'll just have to live with it. Once the gear had dried I individually adjusted each wheel to ensure they sat correctly. Wasn't as tricky as I was expecting and the Phase Hangar resin parts definitely work well with the Airfix kit. After that was done, I popped on the Phimat, AN/ALQ-101 and fuel tank, along with adding the exhausts and removing the cockpit masking. A little bit of tidy up needed around the rear bulkhead where a bit of overspray has crept in.

51006807012_7c92c48d8a_b.jpg

Not much left to do. Hoping to get the ordnance fitted tomorrow along with the ejection seat then I just need to add a few bits of etch to the canopy and clean up the aforementioned overspray. Will be finished on Sunday.

Stay safe

Wow Dave, thats quite a day's work!

She looks excellent, exactly as Jags look from the Gulf, you've captured it perfectly.

Looking forward to seeing the finished model, which should be very soon by the looks of things.

Cheers mate! All comes together fairly quickly at this stage! The benefits of completing all the sub assemblies in advance 😇

Should be RFI on Sunday.

Niiiice!!! Love the chipping and fading.

Thanks Alex! I'm happy with it too. Easy to go overboard but from looking at my references, I think I've got it fairly close.
