'Operation Granby' Puma

This is based on the roughly 1/100 scale Heller kit of an early French Puma, to which I've added various bits and pieces to make it more like an RAF Gulf War aircraft.

It's been finished using Xtracrylix and decals from my spares box.

The full story can be found here.

Mil Mi-24 Hind D Iraqi Air Force.

Captured by US Airborne forces near Basra, February 1991.

The kit is the very nice HobbyBoss 1/72 Hind painted using Revell and Gunze paints and finished using a mix of kit decals and ones on Begemot 72-002.

RAF Buccaneer - The Seein' Eye.

Revell 1.72.

Turns out it's the old Matchbox kit from 1974 complete with a tiny, postage stamp sized Decal sheet which provides the decor and nose art for XW533, Fiona - Miss Jolly Roger.

No cockpit, pylons or stores whatsoever, everything needed making from scratch except the guided bomb which was generously donated by a nearby Fairchild A10.

As well as the laser and ecm pods, I got some antennas under the nose and on the fin, a fine set of wheel chocks and - my pride and joy - a scratch access ladder to hang on the fuselage.

I wanted a well used and dirty aircraft towards the end of the tour. Sidewinder defence missiles were left off and these venerable old planes were carrying their own bombs and designating for the lot.

What an epic final flourish to complete something like a 30 year active service. A lot of their crew hadn't been born when the Buccaneer came on line.

At first glance this is the same plane that Rob modelled and posted in the Gallery just above, except that he has been brave enough to weather it and I have not! That is partly because we both used the decs from the Matchbox kit, but there are quite a few differences. Rob built the Matchbox kit and had to scratch build or borrow from other kits as it came with a few bits not included, including pylons and armament. Mine on the other hand started life as the old Airfix 2nd moulding which came with an anti shipping weapons loadout. However, I have added a Freightdog conversion set including a new nose, horizontal tail, IFR probe and the wing leading edge bullet aerials. I have also grafted on the intakes from a spare Matchbox kit and used its main undercarriage legs and wheels and of course the decs! The pylons were the kit ones with the launch rails removed, and a load from an Airfix "High Tech Weapons kit" which was released a couple of years after the Gulf war and contains several useful items. I have modelled the plane with 11 mission markings towards the end of the war, when the Buccs no longer carried a Sidewinder for self defence and were loaded with 2 RAF 1000lb LGB so that they could join in the fun. Of course, by that stage they would have been badly faded, scuffed and covered with stains, but I just did not have the heart.

Not perfect of course, but maybe not too bad.

Cheers

G'day people,

This is my Hasegawa EF-111A, AF66050 "Mistress of Deception" on strength with the 42nd ECS at Upper Heyford as she appeared in Feb'91 whilst deployed for Desert Shield/Storm. the Hasegawa kit is superb and as expected is crisply moulded and fits very well generally. The Hasegawa F-111 family of kits remain the most accurate F-111 kits in any scale.

No aftermarket was harmed during the construction of the kit apart from the decal sheet. I did add the ejection initiation handles,  nuclear flash curtains and egress RBF streamers to the cockpit as these items were not included and can be seen through the canopy

WIP here:

Onto the pics

OA-10A "The Unknown Bomber".

Built from the ESCI 1/48 A-10 kit after a false start with a Zhengdefu kit(!), the build thread is found here.

The kit represents a OA-10A, tasked with the Forward Air Control (FastFAC) mission.

p?i=c53c208c05a3da261719999482878b67

I'm aware that the "NF" tactical code and the serial are not applied straight- the instruction sheet for the SpeedHunter Graphics decal sheet kindly donated for this build (thank you- you know who you are!)

specifically states that these markings on the port tailfin were "crooked" on the real aeroplane!

p?i=a182a276a5ab4052df55084e8ed0130c

She carries a typical "FastFAC" loadout.

And that's it for this GB (I think!) There was a teeny Tonka (1/144 Revell) in my stash that I thought of for a second string, but I actually used that for a Tonka GB elswhere.

See you all when the Bf109 STGB starts!

1/48 Hobbyboss A-10 "Steal your face"

Seal your face is the 1974 album by the Greatful dead the album artwork is the skull and lightning bolt.

All done i just need to sort a base for it but the build is as good as I can get it. I enjoyed the build i stumbled at the end but that was more to do with personal issues as opposed to the kit. I added an after market canopy (due to breaking the kit one) resin TERs for the Mk82s and resin aim-9s. Here's the build

British FV107 CVR(T) Scimitar. 1/35 AFV Club kit.

Build log here.

Pretty much OOB apart from the need to extend the rubber tracks with a little Acurate Armour resin (were approx 1 link too short for my liking).

Primary colours Xtracrylix BS361 Light Stone and highlighted over with Vallejo (UK Light Stone + RAL 1001 mix).

Nice kit, had fun.
