1/48 Revell Tornado F.3, 111 (Fighter) Squadron, 2004/5.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my recently completed 1/48 Revell Tornado F.3, marked as ZE158 of 111 (F) Squadron based at RAF Leuchars in late 2004/early 2005. Built as part of my 'QRA North' project for the Interceptors GB, the build thread is here

Extras used included Pavla resin seats, Eduard interior etch, Model Alliance decals, Master pitot tube, Resin wing seals, Resin BOL rails, New Ware masks, home made intake covers, HGW Remove Before Flight tags, Meng AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles and AIM-132 ASRAAM missiles from the spares.

Paints are from Mr Paint - Camouflage Grey and Light Aircraft Grey for the exterior, Medium Sea Grey for the nose,  Light Grey for the interior parts and Dark Gull Grey for the cockpit. Weathering is a mixture of Flory wash and Abteilung oils.

This kit was an absolute slog. Poor fit, poor instructions and a lot of over complicated assembly sequences. Anyway, it turned out ok in the end.

Wow they all look superb Dave,.... top notch modelling,......I really like them and the Fin is amazing.

I`ve been put off building the Revell kit due to the large number of parts and breakdown of the kit,..... but it looks lovely built up.

Cheers

  • DaveJL changed the title to 1/48 Revell Tornado F.3, 111 (Fighter) Squadron, 2004/5.

DaveJL

Top of the morning to you from Northern California.

Congrats on the build, it looks sensational. I am in the second half of the same build and finally have put the poor fit, puttying, sanding and scribing phase behind me and indeed have been using your build for some guidance.

But I am unhappy with the intake trunk area and will be scratch building some intake covers.

Can you share how you went about yours?

cheers for now

Thanks folks!

@DrumBum, the intake covers were made from strips of DIY (not Tamiya etc) masking tape. I cut two 22mm wide strips, sprayed them green then was able to fit and shape them to the intakes. A sharp scalpel was needed to trim and tidy the edges but they worked ok. I think you could work them from aluminium foil, but I thought the masking tape would be less brittle. hope that helps!

As the song goes, two out of three ain't bad.  Nothing to do with your excellent models Dave, but the Phantom was the first aircraft I did QRA on and the Tornado F.3 was the last (11 Sqn at Leeming)

I was retired by the time the Typhoon entered Squadron service.

I was glad when Revell bought out the Tornado F.3 (I could chuck out the Trumpy kit) but as yet I haven't tried to build it.  Yours looks great, I especially like the reverse thrust dirt line up the tail. :clap2:

Having seen the F.3's at Leuchars many times over the years this is a superb rendition of the machine. The weathering is very nicely executed and just right. I've yet to build the Revell F.3 but I certainly won't get one that looks this good.

All three kits together look stunning! Great work.

Nicely done! Yours looks way better than mine, probably because you had more patience with it :D
Built the same kit last year and it really was a pain in the bottom, especially around the intakes and the engines. The whole section collapsed two times during the build. In the end I put it together with some LocTite superglue and hoped it won't break apart a 3rd time. And it worked, otherwise I probably would have binned the kit.
Also I first wanted to replace those crude Sidewinders from the kit with some nice Eduard ones but in the end the kit got so much on my nerves I didn't bother putting more cash and time into it :D

What a marvellous build and a great representation of the wear and tear of everyday use.

Thought that you might be interested in the following if you ever might decide to do an overall Medium Sea Grey F.3.

Taken in mid-June 2009 and manned by a 43 Sqn. crew during that squadron's last week on 'Q' before disbandment but is of 111 Sqn.'s ZE788/HV in a slightly non-standard scheme with 'Fighter Bars' around the fuselage roundel and no tail badge because it had previously been replaced by a 'Royal Air Force Celebrating 90 Years' logo which had since been removed.

First of a two-ship 'Q' scramble that happily coincided with the walk-round photoshoot for the Warpaint volume on the Tornado ADV.

Thanks all!

@RupertTheBear I know how you feel, I was tempted to bin it a few times myself. I think the intakes and wings were the worst bits of an overall poor kit! @Des lovely images mate, I did use the several that you sent me a while ago as references! I would quite like to do another F.3, but unless a new tool comes out, I doubt I will
