IS-1 "Sęp" - Polskie Szybowce - 1:72

Next glider finished After almost two years from start (read: it's not so complicated kit; just the modeller was lazy....) I've finished model of first Polish post-war glider: "Sęp". Model shows a prototype which is easy to distinguish from serial ones - has no air brakes on top wing surfaces.

Lovely model, and an unusual subject. I also love the rib detail, looks like you have done it with close reference to the original - did the kit tell you what to do, or did you have some plans?

This particular set has some signs where ribs are BUT due to quite old forms not on every surface they're visible. For gliders produced by PZW (Sęp, Bocian, Gil, etc...) it is characteristic that spaces between ribs are... raised. I've decided to do not fight with that, not fill all surfaces but "underline" this structure by double color painting.
For some other gliders (especially resin kits) I have no even this kind of support so yes, I'm using plans from books. Main are:

- for gliders developed in Poland: "Konstrukcje lotnicze Polski Ludowej" (there is a low quality PDF on internet available) and "Polskie szybowce SZD" (as far as I know available only in paper form directly from author; see his web page) - ONLY Polish language versions
- for gliders developed outside Poland (but registered in Poland): "Zagraniczne szybowce w Polsce" (only paper; only Polish) and "Sailplanes 1920-1945" and "Sailplanes 1945-1965" (English language )

In both cases Internet, Internet and... old magazines for reference photos.

It's really simple: I'm painting all surfaces for base color, mask the structure and then paint it very lighted using white paint) base color. The results are like on pictures. I've tried another techniques like painting all model for dark brown, the painting in white "empty" spaces and base color on that but my painting skills are to low to achieve satisfying results :(
