Papagei Staffel Fw190D9 - Double build. COMPLETED

Returning for something that I've not done since this Meteoric build - the first ever on Britmodeller.

Simultaneous multiple build of the same basic kit, in this case the Academy 1/72 Focke Wulf Fw190-D9.

These two.

Between the two, I've got enough crosses and decals,

Decals.jpg

to build both Papagei Staffel options (if I paint, rather than decal, the white stripes).

Here two sets of parts.

To result in these stripes on each.  I'm planning on masking and painting the stripes.

To protect my earlier Me262s as they take-off and land.

Progress, firstly the cockpits,

Nextly the airframes,

Followed by filler.  Undercarriage doors dryfitted until I've painted the underside.

This kit offers two canopies - and no guidance about which to fit.

Reading my references, suggests the bulged canopy for head-moving visiblity are the most likely.

The stripes are great paintwork Tim and the upper surface camouflage differences you're illustrating shows the worth of this double build :speak_cool:

I've just found a website, with (copyrite) photos of both these aircraft - just post-war, so survivors.

Papagei Staffel translates to Parrot Squadron.

The thing that really stuck me was the heavy exhaust stains.  Black and heavier than I've ever seen before.

And on Wiki - so it must be true:-  Red 1 pilot Leutnant Heinz Sachsenberg,  the inscription on his Fw 190 D-9 was "Verkaaft's mei Gwand I foahr in Himmel!" meaning

"Sell my clothes I'm going to heaven".

Red 13:  pilot Oberleutnant Klaus Faber (2, Rote 13)

Papagei Staffel translates to Pigeon Squadron.

When I learnt German at high school papagei meant parrot.  Surely more appropriate for the colours!

Started the decals tonight, so just had to share.

Can anyone translate those inscriptions below the cockpits?

This translation http://ww2f.com/threads/the-humor-of-jv44s-sachsenberg.13404/  isn't all bad.

"Verkaaft's mei Gwand 'I foahr in Himmel" is Bavarian not German, and "Himmel" is used in German for heaven (where your soul may go) and sky (where pilots go).

"Im Auftrage der Reichsbahn" may have two background stories, the first I read is, the pilot "landed" his plane outside his own aerodrome and had to return to his base via the Reichsbahn several times so for reasons of convenience/simplicity the plane was operated by the Reichsbahn right from the start, the second is in the early days (read 1940) of Jabo (fighter bomber) the pilot objected to hanging bombs under his plane claiming to carry bombs is the Reichsbahn's job.

"Der nächste Herr, dieselbe Dame!" may refer to dancing or to a brothel, anyway, expect the plane to be used by several pilots.

"Rein muß er und wenn wir beide weinen!" leaves no room for ambiguity, maybe I'd translate it to "He must go in, even if we both will cry!" (and yes, there is no room whatsoever for interpretation of what part of the pilot's body "He" is and where "he" will have to go into).

There are assertions of a red 2 https://www.zimmosflugwelten.de/fotogalerie/deutsche-luftwaffe-bis-1945/der-sachsenbergschwarm-in-1-48/

carrying "Hinein mit Sack und Flöte" ( [let's go] into [it] with sack and flute) and the slogan can be traced back to an "old" (early war) German propaganda film about Stuka-pilots, so who knows?

(the film is banned in Germany due to its background, but maybe outside Germany it may be viewed
