It broke when I tried to cut it from the sprue...

Too late if it's already happened!

But if learnt from Britmodeller - where else- then use an old soldering iron to cut either adjacent sprue, or detach the said part from the sprue

A good option if the smàll part looks hard to access around the sprue, which is also handy for not stressing clear parts - heat your cutting blade over a candle flame and, er well there's no other way to describe it, the blade will cut the plastic "like a hot knife through butter".

you can also throw money at the problem, the Godhand ($$$$), Dispaie ($$$), or higher end Tamiya ($$) side cutters can provide a "hot knife through butter" cut instead of a "snap" cut.

I ended up getting a pair of Dispaie (from eBay seller) after reading a bunch of reviews and was still surprised at how easy it cuts through the sprues attachments and doesn't "ping" small pieces away. I figure a tool used for an action I do hundreds if not thousands of times each kit it was worth investing in.
