Good to see you back Simon, you were missed!

Nice work so far - loving that cockpit with your belts :)

Thanks Ced.

Not much done this weekend because I've been doing some recording but the topsides are done and have had a coat of Future...

20210110-200517.jpg

and the underside has had a second coat...

I'm approaching the point where I have to mix some paint to match the roundels... *shudder*

If you scub on a dry brushing of silver over that coat,..... then polish it with a rag afterwards you should get a better finish without any brush marks.  You may need two coats of dry brushing,.... but it will really help mate,

Cheers

Tony's right Simon, used the same and it eliminated brush lines and polished up well . Used it on my Mikes Magisterial cowling and after polishing a few coats of clear made it pop.  I found doing a bit at a time better too.

Good luck with the paint mixing too.

Great work

Thanks Tony. Just to clarify, are you referring to the top, bottom, or both? I'm planning on giving the bottom a good rub before it gets another coat.

I did mainly mean the bottom mate,.... but it wouldn`t harm the op either,.... it helps remove brush marks and flattens the paint down too,..... ready to polish it with a cloth and get a lovely sheen.

  • 2 weeks later...

Progress has been a little slow because I've been distracted (more of that later) but I have follow the advice in Tony's post and given the top a dry-brush of Metalcote Aluminium followed by a rub-down with a bit of old denim.

20210124-202106.jpg

the bottom's had the same treatment but needs another.

Anyway, the reason progress is slow is because I've got distracted from my usual fare of WW2 aircraft.

Nice distractions, the Frightenong looks fantastic, paint on the Spitfire looks wonderful too, will have to remember the cloth , as usually I only do small areas and use a cotton bud  but that would allow larger areas to be done. Thanks to yourself and Tony.

Thanks Chris.

I seem to have got interested in post-War RAF stuff. I have a Lightning F1 next. An F6 and T3/4 have been added to the stash and fancy a Sabre and Swift. Not good as I have hundreds of unbuilt WW2 stuff in the loft.

Nice.  The Lightnings are lovely,  I don't have much post war models like that apart from a Vampire and a Canberra in the stash. I had better not go down that route otherwise the domestic authorities may take notice !!!

Great distractions though it all helps sustain the old Mojo, I have distraction builds on the go too  we can't help ourselves!!!

Thanks Chris. The F1 is the 1963 kit which has 36 parts (including the stand) andthe F6 is the 2013 kit which has 112 parts (but no stand), proving it's not only mens waistlines that increase in size over time.

I've got a Special Hobby Vampire F1 in the stash (I say that counts as a WW2 aircraft, if I make it as the prototype) but I do fancy a Canberra, trouble is that I can't make my mind up as to which variant and they're all quite pricey on you-know-where.

Nicely rubbed Simon - and the Lightning looks marvellous! :)

Thanks Ced, I've had a lot of practice. The Lightning looks okay from a distance, not so good close-up.

Yes you are right about the waistlines😄. The Canberra i have is the PR9 from Revell(ex Matchbox) do it was cheap.  I saw it when I visited Brenzett Aeronautical Museum a few years ago. Apologies for the thread drift.

There's no need to apologise for thread drift.

I considered that one but I fancy a bomber or intruder. I also keep reading how inaccurate most of the kits are, though I suppose i shouldn't worry if it looks like a Canberra I'll  be happy.

One place I'm looking forward to visiting, when all this is over, is Brenzett. A trip to Manston would also be in order.

Cheers fella, yes i will be visiting both at something, along with Hawkinge  love it there.

I got this one for the Hemp scheme as I saw a picture of one on the upper surfaces and it looked full of interesting weathering opportunities.

If you don't mind a little more travelling, don't forget Tangmere!  Super museum with knowlegable volunteer staff. That's if you haven't already been ... .

Hawkinge, of course. You can tie it in with a trip to the Cat and Custard Pot and Lidl, make a day of it... 😁

I like the look of the PR.9 in the Hemp finish. *heads of to eBay*

That's somewhere I was planning on visiting last year because I haven't been there for several years.

Brenzett now on my list, as is Manston - thanks Simon :)

There are two museums at Manston, the Spitfire and Hurricane museum and the Manston museum. The former has, somewhat unsurprisingly, a Spitfire and a Hurricane (a XVI and a IIc, respectively), and a very good café; the Manston museum, somewhat unsurprisingly, is dedicated to Manston airfield and has an amazing collection of photographs, a rather splendid WW1 diorama, and a collection of (mostly) jet aircraft. Both are definitely worth a visit and, if they're open, a visit to the Ramsgate tunnels is doable on the same day.

Brenzett is small but has a excellent collection of bits and pieces that have been dug up from crash sites around Romney Marsh.

You could probably fit all three into a long day and still have time to visit the Headcorn museum.

For those of you waiting with baited breath for the next instalment of this build, your wait is over.

Progress has been slow because I'm also doing an Airfix Lightning F.2 and a Revell Hunter FGA.9. The former is nearly finished and the later is at the painting stage.

Meanwhile, I've finished painting the Spitfire with Metalcote Aluminium, given it a couple of coats of Future, and masked the tailplane at the transport joint.

20210131-123847.jpg

Now to mix the Greek Blue. Wish me luck. (If anyone has a receipe, please let me know because I can think of better things to be doing than adding white paint to blue paint.)

The other reason progress is so slow is because my attention has been diverted from 1/72 scale kits by life size guitars. Namely:

Thanks for looking.

Nice update for the Spitfire Simon,  looks lovely,

Thanks Chris. I thinned the Metalcote with some turps substitute and followed Tony O'Toole advice about scrubbing on a dry(-ish) coat.

[...] can't help you with the blue unfortunately.

Oh well, looks like I'll be adding drops of white to blue paint then.

Blimey great work on the guitars, they look real !!! Seriously they look lovely.

I'd really like to make my own guitars but, luckily, Fender and Gibson do it for me.

EXCEPTIONAL  progress on your Spitfire.

and the Guitars are awesome  too.

I assume you play and collect them.

Thry are rather lovely, aren't they. I do play guitar but don't collect guitars. They all get used (well, maybe not my SG and Casino), the only reason I have some many is because I never sell one to buy another.

Great progress on the Spitfire, Simon! The aluminium finish is excellent, but I'm afraid I'm another one who can't offer advice on the shade of blue.

The guitars look very impressive!

Cheers,

I *think* by using Colourcoats Roundel/ Oxford Blue and Humbrol 34, I've mixed a blue that's a close match to the blue on the roundels. Even if it isn't, it's a LOT closure than my attempts using Humbrol 25 and 34.

I've got a few days off so I expect this to be finished by Sunday.

Thanks for looking.
