HMS Chatham F87 Type 22 Batch 3 Frigate1/700, Hong Kong July 1st 1997

Recommended Posts

Happy new year to every one and all the best to you and your family.

This is the second one of the last 2 works I finished in 2020(another one is the HMS Yarmouth).

This full resin kit is released by Orange Hobby back to more than 10 years ago.

Because of the production aging, my kit had very serious part deformation for the hull and also shrinkage for upper contruction parts.

So all PE parts cannot fit properlly which I had to cut them in pieces and combine those pieces one by one.

I also used 5 nuts to force the curved hull to stick on the wooden base.

Very tiring work over all but well, since it's the only 1/700 scale Type 22 Batch 3 in the town, I had no choice.

Based on experience from HMS Yarmouth, this is the second sea sailing effect I made so I hope it may have some improvement.

HMS Chatham left a very strong impression to me, when her escorted HMY Britannia withdrawing from Hong Kong on July 1st 1997.

So I decided to make the model to memorize that historical moment.

I understood some details may differ on the model compared with the real ship back to 1997, but since I did not have too much option parts to select, I decided to leave them as they were.

When I first saw this in the VICTORY build thread I did wonder why you had represented her at sea with the jack on the jackstaff, and a helicopter on the flight deck with the ensign staff in position but if escorting HMY, it would be totally appropriate.  It is an absolutely stunning build

My only comment would be regarding the helicopter as it is neither a Mk 6 Sea King (lacking the radome but which I would expect her to carry normally) nor a Mk 4 (wrong sponsons but which given the task she was doing, she may well have carried).  Do you know what type she carried for the HK handover?

The sea scape is beautiful and very realistic.  May I ask how you achieved it?

Not into Maritime modelling one jot, but when I see quality modelling like this I think I should give it a go, first class work. I am wonder how the paint goes on in 1/700? Airbrush and paint must be so critical.

Yes I know the Sea King is not the correct variant, which I converted from the Orange Hobby 1/700 resin MK.6.

Acually I got this photo seems taken at that time in Hong Kong, when Chatham was opened for a visit, you can find the gree Sea King on the deck quite clearly.

In real life I believe the heli shall not be on the deck during her sailing back, but well, a small heli on the deck shall add some colour to the ship from modelling perspective.

So it was glued there. ;)

As for the sea scape, let me explain by WIP pictures later.

Thanks! Yes I mainly used airbrush with some careful(and suffering!) masking process.

Some small parts and details are hand painted.

All I used is GSI Creos Mr. Color lacquar paint.

Here is some work in progress pictures:

The Orange Hobby resin kit is severely deformed.

Y0yl4IO.jpg

I had to insert 5 nuts to force the hull flat, after trying hot water/dryer which approved useless.

Bb8qCo0.jpg

Now it's flat. I also add 1mm plastc sheet on the bottom of the hull, since I would add sea scape.

dPXHPjs.jpg

Because the gell I used for sea scape is almost clear, I sprayed navy blue on the wooden base to add sea colour depth.

I glued all PE parts before painting.

Remove the glue trace by Q-tips with CA glue deliquescent digest.

dwlegp2.jpg

Most PE glued.

Some parts were not glued on the deck since I would paint them seperately to avoid addtional masking work.

Before painting.

As I said some small parts were not glued.

Actually even the main masts and tunnel part were not glued either.

I planted some micro magnets in those parts and hull, so that they can be easily connected during dry fitting without glue the parts, for easier painting process.

A very strong surfacer sprayed which is especially designed for resin(actually it's for automobile repair use).

I paint this one together with the Yarmouth.

BBFCAy2.jpg

Spray the deck color.

And the long march of masking started(suffering)!

This was insane!

Finally all painting finished and decal appied too.

Now I would make sea scape.

First I cut 0.2mm clear plastic sheet to replicate the wave shape.

w76eofU.jpg

Then I mask the sides of hull to avoid acrylic gell poluting the hull surface.

KQiq06t.jpg

6vz14g9.jpg

The acrylic gell I used is a Chinese local brand called "CorMake" which is extremely cheap(around GBP0.6 for 1 bottle 50ml).

First gell use is the "Pacific blue".

elMjlgU.jpg

After it's dried(around 15-20 minutes), add "semi clear wave effect" gell as the base shape of the waves.

Then add "white wave" gell on the top of it, little by little, to create the wave texture.

VLZsKHo.jpg

Tragic happened!

The one piece long rai PE part was splashed off from the hull, due to the continous deformation of the resin hull.

Yes even I use 5 nuts the hull is still keeping deforming! Also because of the tempreture I guess(it was winter at the time but the hull was fixed on the wooden base in autumn).

So I cut the long PE part into 2 pieces, giving it more space to stretch so avoid splashing off again.

You can see the ugly sanded hull surface...

TQcNBuD.jpg

q5hMc8k.jpg

Repainted.

lawasiR.jpg

That's all for the built.

Never an easy job for 1/700 scale, especially the resin kit.

But the satisfaction you get worth the effort.

No pain no gain!

Thanks for watching.

Thanks for coming back to me.  I did wonder if a Mk 4 had been embarked for this trip as it would have offered greater utility given the mission.

When an RN ship enters port in Procedure Alpha, it is quite common for the helicopter to be ranged on the flight deck much to the annoyance of the Flight Commander because it has increased risk of damage if heaving lines are thrown or wires/ropes part.  It's less common to sail in Procedure Alpha and in Procedure Bravo or Charlie the cab is safely tucked up in the hangar.  However, in this case, since CHATHAM was the Royal Yacht escort, different rules apply so its entirely feasible that they would sail in this configuration.

Thanks also for taking us through the build sequence.  That's seriously impressive in that scale.  👍

I love the way that you created the bow wave base structure in plastic sheet first - I may well copy that idea for my next "underway and making way" sea scape.

Well done, that's one seriously nice build, better than Orange Hobby's own promotional pictures that I was looking at yesterday.

Their own pictures show that a lot of work is needed. That and the fact I really need a batch 2 put me off.
