Dornier Do 27B Special Hobby

Recommended Posts

This is my latest just finished. It is 1/72 Special hobby Dornier Do 27B-2, D-ENTE, Tanzania 1958-59. This zebra striped aircraft was flown by Michael Grzimek, a west German zoologist and filmmaker while he was making documentary films. Sadly on 10 January 1959 the plane collided with a vulture over the Ngorongoro crater causing him to lose control and he was killed in the crash. Anyway hope you like.

Great looking model!

It made me remember reading Bernhard Grzimek's book "Serengeti darf nicht sterben" a long time ago. Bernhard Grzimek, the father of Michael, was a hugely influential zoologist, environmentalist, film maker and author in West Germany. His film and book on wildlife in the East African Serengti natural reserve turned out to be a great success, but his son died, as you wrote, during the making of the film when D-ENTE crashed.

That's a beautifully neat build of a very interesting aircraft!

The stripes are decals, I assume - or did you brush-paint them?

No the stripes are decals, and they are very fragile to use, one touch and they curl up, still i enjoyed it.
