Spot of the day, Part 4

Another not really a spot of the day, but I've just stumbled across this on-line car auction.  They've got some quite interesting lots, I think the elan is probably my favourite. (Obviously I can't afford it, otherwise I wouldn't be tell you all about it)

I click the link & go into dream-land. There’s a nice Espada with the steering wheel on the correct side! If only I had a spare £130k

I think there must be something wrong with me - I was looking through those and found myself thinking "Hmmm, nice Maestro".

On more normal wants, there's a very tempting XJS on the first page - If only my garage wasn't built for a Ford Anglia...

I thought the same about the lovely little MG1100!

But I really, really want the ex-Mikkola Mk1 Escort Twin Cam please....!!

There's some lovely stuff in that auction.  I quite fancy the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLCs, I'm not sure if I'd pay extra for the ex-Peter Sellers car although I quite like the idea of a car with a with a famous previous owner.

Deviation off topic; in the 1980s and 90s there was a con going where people registered a car in a celebrity's name then sold it on at a premium as having been owned by that famous person. Most cons registered in the name of a dead person but some did alive ones and were caught out.

'L' suffix red Rover 2000.....I think the colour was not original as I am never recall one in that colour

Had a summer job in uni working in a pub - owner had a red V8 3500 (and a lime green BMW 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile'!)

That must have been hell of a car at that time. Still something I would love to own.

Me too - but would need to have a big lottery win! I didn't know anything about the cars at the time (and I'm still no expert on them) so it may not have been true, but he told me it had BMW Motorsport body panels on it that were even lighter than standard - I do remember you could ''dent''' the aluminium bonnet with one finger - push it without much force and it would flex inwards and then spring back out! He'd also had work done on the engine - it was a rapid car!

Hell yes, though it might have got a respray in something a bit more restrained. Going back to the auction, I really liked the Espada, lusted after them big time back in the day, but the Hannu Mikkola Twin cam Escort would have to be the pick of the lot for me.

Get in line - that's mine...!! (oh wait, I didn't win Euromillions again on Friday. Rats...!!)

After the sad news yesterday of Hannu's passing, I bet it'll go for twice the price now. :(

From what I remember there were two 'standard' colours - the green or orange (could well be wrong on that though!) - both of which are my all time favourite car colours - Le mans green on a Mk1 Escort and Vista Orange on a Mk2!! :)

Good to see you've chosen the 'one careful owner' car, Keith. 😉

Are you after Escort Mk2 1600 Sport stripe decals? There may be some news better than winning Euromilions in the offing!

I hadn't heard that, bugger, saw him in the 1973 Heatway Rally of NZ, driving a Ford NZ Escort RS 1800, it sewed a seed which lives today. RIP Hannu Mikkola. :(

Right O, chaps.... How many cars do Bentley produce in a year?

Are they still hand built and individually furnished??

The reason I ask is I took a stroll around Southampton Dock gate 4 the other day, where they were loading one of those car transporter ships. And there's this cohort of Bentleys waiting their turn to go off to China or Saudi or somewhere. Lines and lines of 'em.

And they were still coming......!

How much of their annual output was getting lined up?

Or are they just churned out in the 1000s like any other SUV??

Around 12000 cars in a year.

Wow, I thought they were counted in hundreds, and all hand built to ultra specs. I must admit they didn't look anything special sitting in the lines. Very average appearance

Vesa is quite correct - around 10-12000 units per year , split between the Bentayga , Flying Spur and Continental GT variants . Sadly , the magnificent Mulsanne ceased production early last year . With the demise of the Mulsanne , we also saw the end of the wonderful L410 engine , the pushrod V8 which has powered Bentleys since 1959 and , of course , Rolls Royces when they were still proper Rolls Royces rather than BMWs .

As regards the current cars , there is still a lot of hand work in them and the W12 engines are still assembled on site , though there's nowhere near as much as there was when I joined what was then Rolls Royce Motors in 1985 .  In those days , almost everything was made on site or at least worked on in some way or other . Back in those days it was an amazing place to work and you could get almost anything made .  When I took redundancy last year it was barely recognisable as the same factory .
