72modeler
Got this the other day from a longtime friend and modeling buddy; just now had a chance to view it, and I thought many of you might also find it of interest. What an amazing woman aviator and character; what an incredible list of the 'Who's Who of military and civilian test pilots and engineers of the 40's-50's! I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did. Those were the days! It's long, but well worth your time. Mike https://youtu.be/gitkbTnxT9k
noelh
Thanks for that. I'll watch it at some point. Some very famous test pilots are featured.
Alan P
Thanks for the link. The story of women aviation pioneers is fascinating. Here's a nice article covering the main points through the 20th Century: https://www.jobsinaviation.com/aviation/careers-advice/the-history-of-women-in-aviation/ Full disclosure: I wrote this 😂
noelh
Good article Carl/Alan. But I think if you were to write it again you might want to include this lady: https://www.greentigergroup.com/downloads/truck-names/stories-two-women-aviators-two-raf-men/lady-mary-heath/lady-mary-heath-2/ Not only was she the first woman ro obtain a British Commercial licence in 1926. She actually flew with KLM in 1928, unpaid but I still think that qualifies as the first female airline pilot. The world wasn't ready for that and she was forced out. Famous at the time but largely forgotten now. The rest of the article pretty much sums up the situation. The door has been wide open to women for many years now. But the numbers remain stubbornly low. Indeed in my experience many of the women airline pilots I know are daughters or grand daughters of pilots. That's not uncommon in many professions though. I also know several female instructors who had no interest in moving to the airlines. Maybe young women take a look at the job if they even consider it and think. That's no life. Indeed I wouldn't even encourage my sons to consider flying as a career. Not that they're interested. It's family unfriendly unless you get a stable base. Male or female that's a factor. Plus look at this year, enough said. Edited December 29, 2020 by noelh
