1/35 Takom Mk11 Chieftain and FV432

Thought I'd post some pics of a build that's been going on some time, meant to be relatively quick but life has very definitely got in the way this year!

Started back in April, very slow progress;

The plan is a Mk11 Chieftain with a 432, on a simple base, extras are Voyager models etch for the Chieftain and Tetra model works etch for the 432 with Master Club tracks for both, which I haven't used before. Accurate Armour figures with Hornet heads when we get that far.

Started with the Chieftain building up the hull and replacing various bits with the etch;

Turret next, hopefully it'll move a bit faster!

Cheers

Very nice so far👌I used the Masterclub tracks on my 432 and I found using 0.5 wire instead of the resin pins worked better for me and no glue was needed.

Ivan

Thanks Ivan, I'll try that.

Cheers

Very nice start Nick,

I was tempted to go for the Voyager set for my Mk.10 build but a couple of things put me off. Firstly, I could only find Chinese suppliers and couldn't wait for the delivery time given and secondly, I had a set for a Centurion build and 80% is still in the box unused, I just felt that the time and effort needed for some of the details wasn't worth it. Having said that looking at your build I think it would have definitely been worth getting for the Chieftain, especially for the engine grills and the gun crutch. When I do my Mk.5 I will invest in a set.

I'm looking forward to watching your build progress.

Hi Wayne, It does add to those areas, especially the engine covers. The kit supplied etch looks a bit heavy.

Nice project mind if I follow along, socially distanced of course?

What colour scheme are you doing?

Nice to have you along Roger, BAOR black and green I think.

Catch up pics from progress over Xmas, mostly etch detail on the turret;

Hopefully the etch wipers will stay in place for painting and the periscope will slot in behind

And now to a problem (of my own making).  The builds been stalled for a while and in the interim the room's been decorated, tidied etc.................and I've lost the gun mask!

Made a 'stop' for the barrel

50856298493_77275720d5_z.jpg

Tissue paper and diluted PVA for the canvas cover with 1mm tube for the coax barrel shroud

50856298483_a5154ee1f7_z.jpg

Looks a bit rough close up but should be ok under a coat of paint

More work on the barrel to replace the moulded on straps, then tracks.

Thanks for looking

Cheers

You have nearly as much bling on that turret as you normally have on your ship models  :yikes:

Great fix with the tissue cover

Slow progress of late but a bit more on the turret;

The Voyager set has some straps for the thermal sleeve which add a bit of texture.

Carved the moulded straps away with a micro chisel;

50919239132_b3ed2edf25_k.jpg

Added the PE straps with extra for the ends of the straps and small offcuts to represent where the strap goes through the buckle;

50918417958_bb51ea6b03_k.jpg

Quite a lot of work but worth it in the end I think.

More bits on the turret, TOGS;

50919105711_062edd4ab7_h.jpg

Weird curved things on either side of the rear of the turret - does anyone know what they are?

50919239372_043bc4a74b_h.jpg

And the smoke grenade mounts. They look a bit skewed but sit where the kit ones would have done. I don't know if the ones on the left (right in the pic) of the turret were re positioned when the upgrade to Mk11 and TOGs was carried out?

Nice to see some progress Nick, it's taking shape. Those voyager sets are certainly very comprehensive. I didn't think I would have the patience to use it on mine but seeing yours I may well use it when I do a Mk.5.

That is looking really nice indeed👌 it could be that if the smoke discharger was further back it would have been in the TOG’s sight line🤔

Cheers Ivan-o, that was my thinking re the smoke discharger, but I haven't been able to find any head on shot of a Mk11 in real life to compare.

Hey Nick

Clean build and PE makes the difference 👍
When I open a Voyager set, I always get a quick shock because of the many parts.
But once you start, you immediately see that the work is worth it.
Your comparison with the original kit parts is proof of that.

Have fun!

Slow progress of late but a small update;

Grab handles on the turret;

51106943789_05423f8128_h.jpg

Commanders cupola has had some cables added to the lamp and what i assume is a closed up firing cable for the GPMG;

51106943744_e2e03c4436_k.jpg

Track test fitted;

51106624357_cbc69f588c_k.jpg

The Chieftain's been put away ready for painting when the 432's ready as well.

Intention was to almost completely close up the 432 and not do the interior. I did want a commander figure in the hatch though an ideally a driver figure. After thinking about it I decided to do the interior and open it all up. If anyone ever releases some late 80's ealry 90's infantry I can add them later.

So got one of these off e-bay;

51107200566_de44273747_b.jpg

This will give the driver figure and legs to add to the Accurate Armour commander. I know the uniform are wrong but sitting in the hull and painted DPM I think they'll be ok.

Can anyone with experience of the real thing help me; there are loads of pics of the commander's of 432's standing very  high out of the hatch - would they be stood on the floor with the seat folded or stood on the seat itself?

Having decided to do the interior, next up is detailing and cleaning up ready for painting.

Cheers

Bit of a catch up post, limited time of late so bits here an there but the 432 interior's coming together.

The battery boxes as supplied with the kit have 2 with exposed batteries and one with a cover. All the references I've seen have covers on them so made a couple of resin copies;

Original;

51220951695_4cdf73608a_b.jpg

Mould;

51219166272_deaa781e06_b.jpg

And the copies, bit rough but look 'used'

51220956855_0dfe4073bd_b.jpg

51220102093_40843fc37d_b.jpg

Interior walls sprayed up;

 51219883681_47d5178bb1_b.jpg

And a filter applied with a pin wash after;

51219883451_18f23d83e1_b.jpg

Assembly started after adding some chipping. Also added a couple of 'spare' cables from 0.2mm copper wire to the radio holder for interest and some cables on the radio fronts as well as wiring on the boxes at the front;

51220651609_4cc8f9c3b8_b.jpg

51220958295_37cf7fcb28_b.jpg

Drivers fire extinguisher added (thanks Dads203, saw that on your 436 post);

51219170857_9d816fb16a_b.jpg

Dry fit with the front buklhead, the control panel is pre-printed from the Tetra etch set;

51219170872_89d5897ee6_b.jpg

Rear panels and seats fitted;

51220651639_09c846e240_b.jpg

Drivers position with the engine bulkhead fitted;

51220102278_a98223553c_b.jpg

The driver figure as moulded has both legs out strait ish, presumably for driving an MBT, but doesn't fit in the drivers position in the 432.

Bit of surgery - never tried this before but as he'll be mostly hidden, nothing to lose;

51219170897_19f553d6a0_b.jpg

51220102253_52ecff0538_b.jpg

51220102258_a6a76a5970_b.jpg

Bit of filler to fix the join later. Doesn't look too bad in situ, needs checking for alignment with the hatch opening;

51220651759_291c29e759_b.jpg

Rear bulkhead fitted, few detail bits to pick out;

51219883641_7d49866d10_b.jpg

51219164062_6bcc077830_b.jpg

Hopefully some of the detail will be visible through the rear and roof hatches.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers
