Paul Allen's Luftwaffe collection

The late Paul Allen had the passion and the means to bring many classic aircraft back into airworthy condition. Here are some of the Luftwaffe aircraft in his collection. I hope you enjoy seeing them. Video via Youtube.

I agree with Dennis. I really hope that the aircraft of this collection find a good home - owners with money and the passion to keep them flying. The Me262 was so close to flying when the funding ceased and the Stuka would be a treasure to see in the air.

Yes, indeed it would! IIRC he also has a Bell P-59A Airacomet that  was going to be restored with its original Whittle engines. Hopefully his collection and the museum/restoration shops are in some sort of trust and will continue.

This might make Seattle a worth while place to visit. Off topic a bit @72modeler did you see a mention in FSM about a group in Pennsylvania that is trying to restore a P-61 to flight status? A photo of the plane is shown; but, it doesn't have a turret. So, it could be a P-61A, or a P-61B without the turret installed as yet. The issue was in the Feb. to Apr. issue; don't remember which one, apologies. The owners of the title museum are definitely doing a reat thing. I hope for great success in their efforts.

@JPuente54I think this is the one you are referring to at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, PA http://www.maam.org/p61/p61_begin.htm

Yep- that's the one! It will have an operating dorsal turret. You beat me to posting a link for him! It's a P-61B.

I think the museum is shuttered now if I'm not mistaken. Certainly nothing flying.

I was there before the whole covid thing hit and I highly recommend going there, it is outside of Seattle. The Mossie is georgeous, they have a couple of Spits, a Hurricane, their famous Fw's and if you are an armour fan, a Pzkw IV, Pershing and Churchill crocodile just to mention a few. They wsre really moving along on the Stuka but alas the covid put the kibosh on that. Oh yes,the Ki-43 Oscar and Zero (not a fan of the elongated canopy, not a K model) but a Zero nonetheless. Oh yes, a static display of atomic bombs to boot.

Cheers

I was lucky enough to visit the collection more than ten years ago. It was open at only very restricted times back then. I happened to turn up on a day it was closed. As I was about to move on I spotted Paul Allen coming out the entrance with some visitors and two bodyguards. I approached one of the guards, when he was a bit away from the group, and asked him to explain to Mr Allen that I had been to a conference at Boeing and was due to return to Australia the next day: would it be possible for me to have a quick look at the collection? Paul Allen himself came across and pointed out that he was engaged in a business transaction at the time, but I would be welcome to look at the aircraft if I was happy to be escorted, and I could take as long as I liked. So I got to seee the collection accompanied by a big guy, immaculately dressed in a tailored suit that had a bulge under the armpit! He was a nice guy but knew nothing about aircraft. I think he was happty to have a couple of hours off the job.

After the Stuka project was finally made public a couple of years back I bought the 1/48 Airfix kit to represent it - this Stuka is what spurred my interest in the type when it was imported to NZ in my childhood - and aside from some interior parts she's waiting for the real deal to be completed so I can copy paint, stencils etc.

I know it was a terrible tragedy for the Allen family when Paul died, but part of me was immediately worried these projects wouldn't be completed. They say no news is good news, but...

Hi.

Worse case I think is if the collection gets split up and sold

It appears that the whole 'empire' was inherited by his sister

So the aircraft flying side I suppose depends on if she is interested

   Cheers.
