Lord Riot
Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I'm afraid I know very little about trains but my mate's son loves them and we wanted to get him a train book for his 11th birthday. Any suggestions!? He's pretty knowledgeable so nothing too childish, but plenty of nice photos, line drawings/profiles etc like you can get for aircraft. Any books with the diesels and electric ones in rather than history or steam engines, maybe like 80s, 90s onward? Thanks!

cmatthewbacon
You can’t go wrong with DK books for that age group: https://www.dk.com/uk/book/9781409347965-the-train-book And while you’re at it, set him on the right path with this: https://www.dk.com/uk/book/9780241298824-engineers/ Or this: https://www.dk.com/uk/book/9781465490001-stephen-biestys-incredible-cross-sections-of-everything/ best, M. bentwaters81tfw
If he has computer access, point him at Railcam.uk As a non subscriber he can access trackside cameras in the UK and abroad 24/7. Full subscribers get to see about 114 cameras with more to come post covid. Track diagrams, timings and routings are all to be had It's £23 a year or about 7p per day. Worth a look, even for free. Des
Not into rail but lately I have been buying a lot of aviation titles published by Amberley at reduced prices from www.Booksetc.co.uk and have noticed that they have a wide selection of rail titles both modern and historical available , usually under a tenner each and if he likes the style a good way to build up a library and at A5 size are shelf friendly.
