a real 1600 crossflow!  Not the most sophisticated of lumps.

I had a variety of cc's of crossflows in my rally Escorts, the final and favourite one being a 1760 with a fast road cam, big valve ported and flowed head running twin 45 Webers - I loved that motor! More power than a standard BDA in a RS1600, and they were a pretty light lump. Maybe not sophisticated by the standards of today's electronically controlled marvels but they were really driveable, easily tuneable and pretty reliable. Only problem I recall having with one was a blown headgasket on the way to work one morning which I had fixed by lunchtime! I loved my crossflows! :)

Love the detail you're putting into the motor Andy, she's going to look great !

I am fairly sure that's right. The Anglia only had a 997cc engine. Mind you with the Lotus 7, that would probably still make it fairly quick!

In the early 70's, my mate at school had a '63 Anglia with the 1500cc lump with twin SU carbs and Escort Mexico front struts, Lowered all round as well. Went PDQ, I can tell you...

Cheers,

Alan.

Hi John,  you're correct according to the Jeremy Coulter book the Lous 7 the engine used came from a mk1 Cortina.  But what the doesn't say it what they called it at the time, because they could not have called it a pre-crossfow 🤔.

Well back on the lotus, to give myself a bit of enthusiasm I started on centre tunnel, it took several goes to cover to a decent standard in bare metal foil, not perfect but I'm happy.  However was a bit disappointed with the crome I used on the hoop between the carpet and tunnel as is doesn't really look any different to the ali.  The carpet is form a box a pen came in, the pen was a present and I think I may have upset the sender as I was more pleased with the material in the bottom of the box than the pen. 😀

This is were I might have got over excited,  I decided that the flange between the bell housing and the engine wasn't good enough,  so I have removed the gearbox with a razor saw and made a new flange for the bell housing.   This will also make it easier to paint, hopefully my maths is correct and the width of the saw cut is the same as the width of the new flange 🙏 I have fixed a small magnet to the engine and a small washer to the flange with the idea that it will a good fixing but will allow some rotational movement to ensure all fit correctly.

Next thing to improve is the clutch release mechanism using brass and styrene sheet, a vast improvement but very fiddly.

That's a good idea!

I like the carpet! Looks much more in scale than flock or embossing powder. All coming along nicely, looking forward to more!

Progress on the 7 has been slow, even by my standards.   However the main thing is I'm happy with the results and sometimes the little details just seem to take forever. Basically I have still only finished the bottom half of the engine and gearbox.

The first thing was to add the missing detail, ribbing and a core plug.

The finished gearbox

Finished the fuel pump (particularly pleased with this), new oil filter mounting.  Plus on the reference photo I have for the engine the ignition leads all attach to the distributor horizontally.   This proved to be a real challenge,  but I just about got it sussed before getting into double figures.

I brought some bolt heads by ANYZ (3d printed i think), they weren't cheap at £13 but there's 200 in the set so they should last a while.  They range from 0.6mm to 1.2mm and I can't praise them enough.   I even been able to add a sump plug, and add them to the engine brackets where they to the engine.  Also finished the new alternator.

More of a spot the difference,  than an update.  However   Spark plugs connected up (gave myself extra Brownie points for getting the correct firing sequence 😏) and the rocker cover is finished.   Used Zero textured paint and a silver sharpie, plus used an old piece of red decal under the Cosworth script to help it stand out more (as as per my reference pic).  Next job the carbs.  Thanks for showing an interest Andy

So you'll have no trouble starting it then - as long as you get the timing right! :)

Nice work, it's really looking the part!

Hi Marco,  thanks for sharing.   It great to see a 7 being driven as it was intended to.  I also think they stripped out the engine, fixed the prop-shaft and rebuilt it all in a shorter time than its taken me to detail my engine.  - Andy

Still on the engine!  On the kit the carburetor manifold is length of the block and the exhaust headers have no flanges at all.  I have addressed this, which you  can just about make out on the photos.  I've also finished the carb linkage, I've just noticed on the photos that the linkage to the rear carb is not straight,  it hardly shows to the naked eye so may not try and correct it. Also made the bracket that goes around the oil filler cap out of some brass photoech, allowing me to add the return spring and where I can attach the throttle cable.  So I've now got a fuel pump and the carbs on, so the next step is connecting them up (I think this will really test my patience 🙃, but I have a cunning plan). One thing that has really help was that with a magnet in the engine it will attach to my set square making it much easier to handle, this was not intentional but I think I'll be doing it again.   Thanks for your patience Andy

You've obviously got better eyes than mine, cos it looks fine to me! 🤓

Nice update!

Yeah the engines done!...if you ignore the waterpump, dip-stick 🙄.  Fuel line in on the 3rd attempt 1st one fouled the steering column,  the 2nd one was just......not very good, third time lucky.

However for some reason the exhaust headers no longer line up with the hole in the body 😐.  I must have a faulty moulding as it couldn't possibly be me 🤣

The simplest solution to me was to cut out a rectangle and reverse it.  Thanks for looking - Andy

Bonnets done!

Thanks @dnl42 for the pencil tip (no pun intended 😜) worked a treat on the carb scoup. The fits not perfect,  but I doubt that it was on the original cars.

As you can see this has been a long journey!

Installed a couple of magnets into the front cross member and into the nose cone, therefore it will be removable when it finished.

Finally a better shot of the engine in situ.
