A good reference for Tiger pics is Tiger Battalion 507 by Helmut Schneider. Starts with Tiger 1s and then Tiger IIs. There are also some in Panzer Ace by  Richard Freiherr von Rosen. Both interesting reads too.

Despite having more GB builds in progress than I know what to do with, despite having more in my stash than some small shops  countries  and despite not being a massive Tiger fan, I'm in (again). I enjoyed the late Tiger I built for the STGB last year but adding the zimmerit was a pain, even if it was all decals.

This time, although I'm sticking with 1/48, I'm going for an early vehicle, pre-zimm. I'll be using the Tamiya kit and Techmod decals to represent one of the sand and grey tanks named Tiki belonging to Das Reich in May 1943.

Great subject, but new research shows that Tiki was not sand and grey.

A concise history of Tiki’s numbering and colors can be found here....

Hey, Steve, what’s the issue with the Tamiya turret, and what was your correction ?

Didn't know there was one .... as i have not had a chance to look at the Tamiya kits as yet...the one pictured is an Italeri which is an abysmal kit ...which is why i have scratched all the detail work so far...and will scratch the rest....i have the early mid and late tamiya ones and as far as i was aware they are pretty good just lacking finer detail if you know something let me know we can look into it.

But i always take these things with a pinch of salt .......i remember people going on about the Tamiya Panther G and how the idler was completely wrong....it wasn't completely wrong at all it was the wrong diameter the detail was just fine ...so for 99% of the world nobody would have noticed ....bloody rivet counters really know how to screw everybody's fun up

It's finally stopped raining, not that has anything to do with what I am intending to build, a late production Tiger Ausf.E from sPzAbt 505 in Russia March 44

The Tiger has a coating of zimmerit and the well known charging knight stencil on the turret, my references show a yellow band with the number 312 in black on the barrel.

Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E (Sd.Kfz. 181) Nr.312

I have retrieved my 3 Dragon kits from the primary stash, the Tamiya ones are in the number 2 stash and would take some mining to recover, probably with the assistance of a pit pony or two and as been mentioned, they are a bit long in the tooth so no real need to disturb them today.

The main problem with the Dragon kits are the tracks, kits 6252 & 6253 have the individual magic track links with solid guide horns, the zimmerited Tiger has the DS one piece tracks that can fall to bits at any time.  So I have ordered some metal tracks from China, any one had any experience with Sanxin tracks and pins?

Right this is lifted from the Track links forum regarding Tamiya turrets.........

The Tamiya Initial and Early production kits have always had correct turrets. The original issues of the Late Production and Mid Production Tiger I (with the cast cupola) had the incorrect, symmetrical turret. However, reportedly the reissues of the Late and Mid production kits have had their turrets corrected. Curiously, Tamiya did not announce this, preferring to pretend they had never made the mistake in the first place.
If you are not sure which kit you have, just dry fit the two turret halves and insert them in the hull. The turret left side bulges out noticeably.
And yes, anyone who knows Tigers will spot the difference (for one thing, the 88 mm gun is offset in the mantlet to bring it back to the vehicle's centerline--if the gun is off-center, the turret is wrong).
You could get a resin replacement or just order the updated Tamiya parts from Rainbow Ten or Hobbylink Japan

Luckily all my Tamiya Tigers were bought just a few weeks ago and are new stock so shouldn't affect me but some of you may have earlier releases so if it bothers you

WTF!!!!   4 pages and nothing but banality, slander, pontification and casual abuse of Andy!

I'm up for this already!

Will need to take a while just to catch up on what's been going on, wouldn't want to miss an opportunity to take the whatsit out of our esteemed colleagues....
