That's very nice indeed...and welcome to the forum and the Tiger superthread.... if you decide to paint it please share pics of the progress i'm certain we would all like to see that lovely model recieve a coat of paint

Thanks

Yes, hopefully the Tigers will be painted one day.

Meanwhile I´m practice with my airbrushing, weathering on a Tiger-Wedgie.

Also a lot of fun - here you can see the result - with hs-technic, chipping and some filters - but there is still a long way to the end.

Thanks for that and also for knevi who posted a little after your post - How do you get the other posters names in the black oval thingy?  Technology huh!

I've never done an interior either but surely it's just a model, step by step etc.  I would expect a little bit of sitting back and thinking about how you paint it before you stick it together. Also, mistakes may be harder to rectify but hey, I never make 'em.  Apologies for that, it's late on a Sunday and a few cans of Punk IPA are doing the talking.

I'm also looking at which Tiger to try to recreate and to be honest, I'm thinking more of an undocumented one in the theatre of my choice.  I'll still want to be sure of what was on the tank, where, what colour etc. but there is so much variation in what came out from the factory on what date (not regarding what was documented) due to the fact that they were making tanks in wartime conditions, upgrades were added when the "new" bit was available etc.  Basically, I want to be comfortable arguing that my version/vision is accurate without having someone after the fact pointing out that they have a photo that basically ruins my build.

I did see an article on Reddit about the 128mm gun being put on a Tiger 1 so may start from there - carefully strokes moustache and fades into the background...

On a more serious point, I'll be probably quiet for a bit while I do my research although I'll let you know when I finally choose my kit and put an order in.

John

Ta daaa, only gone an' done it

Opted for the RFM 5050 although have been encountering some supply problems.  Models seem to be a bit understocked at the moment.  eBay seems OK with some really attractive prices but delivery dates were Jan to Mar 2022.  Similar with Amazon but postage was eyewatering.  Both a bit late for xmas.  All through the searching, Bovington kept popping up and today when I looked they were giving Black Friday discounts so I pulled the trigger and it's on it's way.  Seriously 10% - 15% not to be sniffed at and it supports the museum.

Getting closer in my mind, to the tank I want to try to recreate / base the model on, but still some way to go.  I've literally been a Tiger fan for years but never knew the amount of research that's available if you look for it.  Interior colour (lower part of hull) the latest rabbit hole I am down.

It will be the new year before glue touches plastic but I might give an update on the tank I'm thinking of recreating and the setting / back story.  That way you can all point out the error of my ways,

Hi John,

Not sure if you have this site added to your favourites yet:

https://tiger1.info/EN/Hachette-Inside-Colours.html

So much usefull information, thank You David!

Only hours left to TGIF 👍🍸🥃🍻🎉

Be careful out there!

Zack

Hi Zack,

Yes I have but thanks for the reminder.  So many times you spot an article that you think confirms what you are thinking but then forget to explore the rest of the site.  the posts on TIGER1.INFO go on forever and if your not a fan of wiring looms, can get a bit discouraging but there are real nuggets of info in there if you persevere

Middle one.....the far left looks to yellow/orange and the far right looks to light although to be fair any of them would do as you can adjust the colour on the fly with oil or enamel filtering.....

Any of them as long as the funny yellow staining don't taint mi coffee....

Have to agree but saying that, I don't see the point in getting to hung up on exact shade as by the time we've fiddled, faffed and filtered the colour changes again.

In some ways start lighter as the weathering will darken the yellow anyway.

Good luck

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated!👍

From left to right these are:

Vallejo 71.025 RAL 7028

Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow

Tamiya XF-88 Dark Yellow 2

And yes, what you are seeing might be different from what I am seeing, light, camera, monitor.
But hey, it is good to have your opinion ;)

Now a completely different question, How do you guys paint your roadwheels?
I think I have tried and failed so many different ways i can not count them.

But tonight I will decide on this build.
Question # 1:
* paint it all black and then paint the center section

* Vice versa, paint it all DG and then paint the rubber rim

* Rubber - Black or Grey?

So many women, so little time...

Stay safe, stay sane and happy modelling ;)

My personal way of doing it is the first choice. Paint the wheels black and then using a template to do the centres. I use one of these for masking. Very cheap and reusable. You can get professional templates which are precise but I find these are near enough. A very dark grey is best for rubber, Tamiya Rubber or NATO black are good.

That's weird about the DG. I prefer to use XF-88 nowadays but I would have chosen the middle one too from your spoon photo.

I tend to paint the running gear in chocolate brown, and then fade in the vehicle color from the wheel centers out.
Brush paint the tires/rims in a diluted black, and then mist with a khaki.
I then use oil washes, and a heavy mist with khaki, followed by more oils.
Mud clumps get a little extra treatment.

How strange ....i was not surprised that the first colour was Vallejo...... it's the reason i use MIG always thought the Vallejo RAL's were slightly off...or perhaps off is too strong ...just prefer the pallet from MIG.

Okay, question for the Hive…

What foam is Uncle using ? What am I looking for when ordering ?

What about a hot wire cutter ?

Can't help with hot wire cutter ...expensive i'm guessing..... as for the foam it comes in several colours ...if memory serves different densities' are different colours Grey being the densest ...its used for insulation and for packing of expensive items.......order a top of the range wire cutter and who knows it may well come packed in the stuff  :D.....one more thing i would find a packing specialist don't use Ebay or Amazon it is hella expensive and only sold in small sizes at top cost because the sellers know that we use it for our hobbies.

Found this site UK so no good to you but Styrofoam is also known as XPS Foam.....  https://www.panelsystems.co.uk/product/styrofoam-ravatherm-xps

and this is fairly cheap...... although as i thought they do start ramping up in price for something with better features

Currently working on the Tamiya Sturmtiger as it doesn't need Zim. Typical easy build, but good quality, from Tamiya but this time I am adding some extra bits left over from the RFM kit and entry level scratch building.

p?i=feeb4b36ad33b829318993f8bf03a547

Tracks and wheels have their base colours done. Tamiya LP54 Dark Iron makes a really nice base coat for tracks.

p?i=8e5e6f726f60bff8e9c7f4c0177ccdc3

I took your advice and scratched the rifling from thin plasicard and some gouging. Worked well and far more flexible than the etched parts I have used.

p?i=4750c71934f9bbcfffedf4d49080b60c

This front plate was left over from the RFM kit and needed a mm of scrap plastic at either end to fit properly. Rather easy fix to do.

p?i=2a593035a3bcb5f3eb026f1bba581300

The track hooks were made from scrap etch and based on a couple of photos. They don't look too sturdy to me but they seemed to have worked. Some hooks were easily made for the large bar. Not overly obvious on this photo but will stick out when painted. The grills were leftovers from a Voyager set. A bit of chopping was needed to make them fit better but as it was nice metal to work, with not a big problem.

I've a feeling this stuff should work...

If you look at @THEscaleSHOW build of his superb T54 dio I believe this is what he's used.

Really nice work Stef, particularly so with the rifling in the barrel.

Some great improvements going on!

I'd recommend either kit. RFM is a bit trickier but you get everything you need in the box to make every different version. The Tamiya is typical Tamiya but you'll probably need to spend more to bring it up a level and/or raid the spares box.

I'll get the roof and side skirts done today hopefully and then the paint this week.👍

All looks excellent. Especially the rifling. Maybe you can explain your method in more detail?

I'll give it a try. I'm not a great teacher but it should be simple enough. Will be back soon.👍
