Gloster Gauntlet I and/or II...differences?

Recommended Posts

Hello Collective...

I would like to model a Gauntlet I from 19 Squadron and have a Gauntlet II kit.  The kit may not be perfect (AZ Model), but that's ok.

I am assuming there are differences between the Gauntlet I and Gauntlet II.  I have a feeling that they are not external or cosmetic in nature or would be negligible at 1/72nd scale.  What are the differences please?

Probably not that helpful, but it's all I have.

A small snippet from the MMP book The Bristol Bulldog/Gloster Gauntlet by Alex Crawford:

One slight difference is, as shown in the plans, on I think all MkII s, there is a tear-drop shaped fairing immediately behind the guns on both sides. That is not present on early Gauntlets. I do not know whether that is a distinguishing feature between Is and IIs or whether it was a modification introduced on later Is, but worth checking if you have a photo of the particular one you are modelling.

Thanks Paul.  I will see if the AZ kit has them moulded on the side.  I'll be building one of the Gauntlets from 19 Squadron, late-1930s, pre-Spitfire.
